Asthma is a complex and heterogeneous inflammatory airway disease primarily characterized by airway obstruction, which affects up to 15% of the population in Westernized countries with an increasing prevalence. Descriptive laboratory and clinical studies reveal that allergic asthma is due to an immunological inflammatory response and is significantly influenced by an individual's genetic background and environmental factors. Due to the limitations associated with human experiments and tissue isolation, direct mouse models of asthma provide important insights into the disease pathogenesis and in the discovery of novel therapeutics.

Ca-based porous and rough bioceramic surfaces were coated onto zirconium by micro-arc oxidation (MAO). Subsequently, the MAO-coated zirconium surfaces were covered with an antimicrobial chitosan layer via the dip coating method to develop an antimicrobial, bioactive, and biocompatible composite biopolymer and bioceramic layer for implant applications. Cubic ZrO, metastable CaZrO, and Ca(PO) were detected on the MAO surface by powder-XRD.

The objective of the present study was to investigate the variations in some major primary (sugars and organic acids) and secondary (phenolics, β-carotene) metabolite contents during fruit development and ripening in two important apricot cultivars (Hacıhaliloğlu and Kabaaşı). The changes in the compositional properties of two apricot cultivars were monitored during fruit development with one-week intervals from 56 to 119 days after blossom. During fruit development, the contents of organic acids and phenolics decreased whereas that of sucrose and sorbitol increased.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) may be a source of nuisance in neighbouring places due to hydrogen sulphide (HS) and BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes) emissions. In this study, samples were collected from WWTP workplace ambient air and outdoor ambient air around one of the largest WWTPs in Istanbul with a capacity of 250,000 m/day to evaluate the effects of HS and BTEX emissions. Samples were collected in three seasons for 15-day durations: winter (November 2015), spring (May 2015), and summer (August 2016).

Istanbul Technical University, Molecular Biology-Genetics and Biotechnology Program - Ayazaga Campus, Istanbul, Turkey.

Cardiac tissue engineering focusing on biomaterial scaffolds incorporating cells from different sources has been explored to regenerate or repair damaged area as a lifesaving approach. The aim of this study was to evaluate the cardiomyocyte differentiation potential of human adipose mesenchymal stem cells (hAD-MSCs) as an alternative cell source on silk fibroin (SF) scaffolds for cardiac tissue engineering. The change in surface morphology of SF scaffolds depending on SF concentration (1-6%, w/v) and increase in their porosity upon application of unidirectional freezing were visualized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) is a key chaperone that is abnormally expressed in cancer cells, and therefore, designing novel compounds to inhibit chaperone activities of the Hsp90 is a promising therapeutic approach for cancer drug discovery. Debio-0932 is a second-generation Hsp90 inhibitor that exhibited promising anticancer activity against a wide variety of cancer types with a strong binding affinity for Hsp90 and high oral bioavailability. Anticancer activities of the Debio-0932 were tested in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cell lines.

Systems biology adopted functional and integrative multiomics approaches enable to discover the whole set of interacting regulatory components such as genes, transcripts, proteins, metabolites, and metabolite dependent protein modifications. This interactome build up the midpoint of protein-protein/PTM, protein-DNA/RNA, and protein-metabolite network in a cell. As the key drivers in cellular metabolism, metabolites are precursors and regulators of protein post-translational modifications [PTMs] that affect protein diversity and functionality.

April 2021

General Directorate of Water Management, Republic of Turkey Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Ankara, Turkey.

This study presents an approach to the determination of nutrient sensitive areas (SA) based on National Urban Wastewater Treatment Regulation harmonized under the Water Framework Directive (WFD). A three-stage approach that covers designation of potential sensitive areas (PSA) which are under the risk of eutrophication, physicochemical and biological monitoring at PSA, and application of the suitable biotic indices is used for the determination of sensitive areas. PSA are identified as a result of either available monitoring data or if this is not available according to indexing method which developed in this study based on pressure and impact analysis.

High toxicity caused by chemotherapeutic drugs and the acquisition of drug resistance by cancer cells are the major drawbacks in cancer therapy. A promising approach to overcome the posed barriers is conjugating tumor-homing peptides to drugs or nanocarriers. Such high-affinity peptides can specifically target surface markers overexpressed by cancer cells, ensuring a rapid and cancer-specific uptake of the drugs.

Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, Faculty of Pharmacy, Ankara University, Yenimahalle, 06560, Ankara, Turkey. Electronic address:

The equipping of nanoparticles with the peptide moiety recognizing a particular receptor, enables cell or tissue-specific targeting, therefore the optimization of the targeted nanoparticles is a key factor in the formulation design process. In this paper, we report the optimization concept of Doxorubicin encapsulating PEtOx-b-PLA polymersome formulation equipped with Peptide18, which is a breast cancer recognizing tumor homing peptide, and the unveiling of the cell-specific delivery potential. The most dominant formulation parameters, which are the polymer to Doxorubicin mass ratio (w/w) and the aqueous to organic phase ratio (v/v), were optimized using Central Composite Design (CCD) based Response Surface Methodology.

Department of Genetics and Bioengineering, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Yeditepe University, 26 Agustos Campus, Istanbul, 34755, Turkey.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer, which is about 15-20% among male cancers worldwide. As most common strategies such as radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or surgery alone can be unsuccessful in the treatment of prostate cancer, this study aims to develop a new approach to deliver newly generated proapoptotic gene, BIKDDA, to androgen independent prostate cancer cells, 22RV1, using new generation nanocarriers called ellipsoids. As far as it is known, this is the first study that assesses the ability of proapoptotic gene BIKDDA to induce apoptosis in prostate cancer cell.
