Complications of delayed diagnosis and challenges: successfully managed SPTB gene variant hereditary spherocytosis with hepatocellular jaundice-a case report.

Background: Hereditary spherocytosis is a rare genetic disorder of the red blood cell membrane that is characterized by anemia, jaundice, and splenomegaly; however, in the absence of family history and with unusual clinical presentation, the diagnosis might not be made until later in life.

Case Presentation: Here, we present a challenging case of genetically proven hereditary spherocytosis that involves the SPTB gene in a 23-year-old female patient from Ethiopia who had repeated medical visits for episodic jaundice and hepatosplenomegaly, with unusual features of conjugated hyperbilirubinemia, pancytopenia, normal reticulocyte count, and lack of family history, where the delay in diagnosis led to several complications. The patient was successfully managed with simultaneous splenectomy and cholecystectomy.

Determinants of sputum culture conversion time in multidrug-resistant tuberculosis patients in ALERT comprehensive specialized hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: A retrospective cohort study.

Introduction: The treatment response of multi-drug resistance tuberculosis (MDR-Tuberculosis) patients is mainly dictated by the sputum culture conversion. An earlier culture conversion is a remarkable indicator of the improvement in the treatment response. In this study, we aimed to determine the time to culture conversion and its associated factors among MDR-Tuberculosis patients in All Africa Leprosy, Tuberculosis and Rehabilitation Training Center (ALERT) Hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Complete Congenital Absence of the Left Pericardium in Elderly Patient: A Case Report.

Congenital pericardial absence is an uncommon heart condition that is usually undiagnosed due to a lack of symptoms and awareness. In this case study, we present a 72-year-old patient who initially presented for medical evaluation due to unexplained weight loss, a displaced cardiac apex, and poor echocardiographic windows. An extracardiac tumor was suspected at first, but it was later determined that the patient had a congenital complete absence of the left pericardium.

Case Presentation: A 61-year-old retired black African female was brought into the emergency room on 13 May 2022, with a 4-day history of shortness of breath and high-grade fever and a 1-day history of global body weakness (bilateral paralysis of the upper and lower extremities). Motor examination indicated reduced muscular strength in all limbs, with a Medical Research Council score of 2/5 in the right arm of the upper extremities, 1/5 in the right leg of the lower extremities, 1/5 in the left leg of the lower extremities, and 2/5 in the left arm of the upper extremities.

Ethiopia is attempting to reduce cancer-related morbidity and mortality through a strategic national cancer control plan but according to Globocan 2020, hematologic malignancies particularly leukemia and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma rank among the top five leading causes of new cancer incidence and cause of death among all age groups in both sexes. Hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT) is an advanced treatment modality that makes the only effective treatment for cancer and non-cancer-related hematologic diseases unresponsive to conventional therapy. Patients who need stem cell transplants must travel to abroad countries to get the treatment.

Background: Brucellosis is a neglected bacterial zoonotic disease with substantial economic impact on households. Pastoral communities are a potential risk group due to their way of life being closely interlinked with their large livestock herds.

Methodology: A semi-structured questionnaire survey was conducted in households in the pastoral Afar and Somali (SRS) regions.
