Tu and Yuen Center for Functional Onco-Imaging, Department of Radiological Sciences, University of California Irvine, Irvine, CA 92697, USA.

Previously, we introduced photomagnetic imaging (PMI) that synergistically utilizes laser light to slightly elevate the tissue temperature and magnetic resonance thermometry (MRT) to measure the induced temperature. The MRT temperature maps are then converted into absorption maps using a dedicated PMI image reconstruction algorithm. In the MRT maps, the presence of abnormalities such as tumors would create a notable high contrast due to their higher hemoglobin levels.

Tu and Yuen Center for Functional Onco-Imaging, Department of Radiological Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA 92697, USA.

We recently developed a novel hyperspectral excitation-resolved near-infrared fluorescence imaging system (HER-NIRF) based on a continuous-wave wavelength-swept laser. In this study, this technique is applied to measure the distribution of the therapeutic agent dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) by utilizing solvatochromic shift in the spectral profile of albumin-bound Indocyanine green (ICG). Using wide-field imaging in turbid media, complex dynamics of albumin-bound ICG are measured in mixtures of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and water.

Image-guided small animal radiation research platforms allow more precise radiation treatment. Commercially available small animal X-ray irradiators are often equipped with a CT/cone-beam CT (CBCT) component for target guidance. Besides having poor soft-tissue contrast, CBCT unfortunately cannot provide molecular information due to its low sensitivity.

In preclinical research, fluorescence molecular tomography (FMT) is the most sensitive imaging modality to interrogate whole-body and provide 3D distribution of fluorescent contract agents. Despite its superior sensitivity, its mediocre spatial-resolution has been the main barrier to its clinical translation. This limitation is mainly due to the high scattering of optical photons in biological tissue together with the limited boundary measurements that lead to an undetermined and ill-posed inverse problem.

Accurate segmentation of the breast tissue is a significant challenge in the analysis of breast MR images, especially analysis of breast images with low contrast. Most of the existing methods for breast segmentation are semi-automatic and limited in their ability to achieve accurate results. This is because of difficulties in removing landmarks from noisy magnetic resonance images (MRI).

Accurate segmentation of the breast region of interest (BROI) and breast density (BD) is a significant challenge during the analysis of breast MR images. Most of the existing methods for breast segmentation are semi-automatic and limited in their ability to achieve accurate results. This is because of difficulties in removing landmarks from noisy magnetic resonance images (MRI) due to similar intensity levels and the close connection to BROI.

Real-time photo-magnetic imaging.

Biomed Opt Express

October 2016

Tu and Yuen Center for Functional Onco-Imaging, Department of Radiological Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA, USA; Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of California, Irvine, CA, USA.

We previously introduced a new high resolution diffuse optical imaging modality termed, photo-magnetic imaging (PMI). PMI irradiates the object under investigation with near-infrared light and monitors the variations of temperature using magnetic resonance thermometry (MRT). In this paper, we present a real-time PMI image reconstruction algorithm that uses analytic methods to solve the forward problem and assemble the Jacobian matrix much faster.

Background: Diagnosis of spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) relies on the ability of medical staff to recognize cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage at the spine. However, difficulties with interobserver discrepancy sometimes occurred while reading magnetic resonance myelography (MRM) because clear image definition was lacking. In this study, we tried to determine which pattern of CSF distribution is more reliable for diagnosis of CSF leakage by using MRM.

Department of Radiological Sciences, Tu and Yuen Center for Functional Onco-Imaging, University of California, Irvine, CA, USA.

We previously introduced photo-magnetic imaging (PMI), an imaging technique that illuminates the medium under investigation with near-infrared light and measures the induced temperature increase using magnetic resonance thermometry (MRT). Using a multiphysics solver combining photon migration and heat diffusion, PMI models the spatiotemporal distribution of temperature variation and recovers high resolution optical absorption images using these temperature maps. In this paper, we present a new fast non-iterative reconstruction algorithm for PMI.

Tu and Yuen Center for Functional Onco Imaging, Department of Radiological Sciences, University of California, Irvine, California 92697, USA.

Due to the strong scattering nature of biological tissue, optical imaging beyond the diffusion limit suffers from low spatial resolution. In this letter, we present an imaging technique, laser-induced photo-thermal magnetic imaging (PMI), which uses laser illumination to induce temperature increase in a medium and magnetic resonance imaging to map the spatially varying temperature, which is proportional to absorbed energy. This technique can provide high-resolution images of optical absorption and can potentially be used for small animal as well as breast cancer and lymph node imaging.

It is challenging to image fluorescence objects with high spatial resolution in a highly scattering medium. Recently reported temperature-sensitive indocyanine green-loaded pluronic nanocapsules can potentially alleviate this problem. Here we demonstrate a frequency-domain temperature-modulated fluorescence tomography system that could acquire images at high intensity-focused ultrasound resolution with use of these nanocapsules.
