Article Synopsis
  • The study explored the relationship between polygenic risk scores (PRS) for blood pressure and mortality due to cardiovascular disease (CVD) and all causes, particularly considering environmental lifestyle factors.
  • It analyzed data from 9,296 participants over a median follow-up of 12.6 years, finding that higher PRS groups had significantly increased risks of CVD mortality compared to medium PRS groups.
  • The findings suggest that combining genetic risk factors with lifestyle information could help identify individuals who might benefit from targeted lifestyle interventions, despite the PRS having limited ability to independently predict outcomes.

Background: Deviations of hemoglobin from normal levels may be a factor in cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk; however, conclusive evidence is lacking. In addition, preclinical conditions may influence hemoglobin concentrations, but studies focusing on reverse causation are limited. Thus, we examined the relationship between hemoglobin concentrations and CVD mortality risk, considering reverse causation.

Objectives: This study validated the Japanese version of the Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder-Rating Scale-5 (ADHD-RS-5) and the Disruptive Behavior Disorders Rating Scale. We extended the ADHD-RS-5 by adding the oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder subscales to compare the two rating scales psychometrically.

Methods: We examined the internal consistency, test-retest reliability, construct validity and criterion validity of the two rating scales in 135 Japanese outpatients aged 6-18 years.

Background/aim: Patients diagnosed with cancer are expected to choose one or more treatment modalities after receiving corresponding explanations of the options. When making these choices, patients consider the effects of treatment and aspects related to their quality of life. These concerns can cause confusion and conflict owing to the complicated information provided by medical caregivers.

Article Synopsis
  • A study investigated the relationship between high blood pressure (BP) and the risk of mortality from various cancers, excluding initial deaths to avoid reverse causality.
  • The analysis included 8,088 participants from the general Japanese population over a 29-year period, focusing on confounding factors like smoking and obesity.
  • Findings revealed a significant association between high BP and an increased risk of colorectal cancer mortality in younger adults, specifically those aged 30-49, while no such link was found for other types of cancer.

Background: Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) has been reported as the development of drugs with immunomodulatory properties, such as anticancer, immunosuppressive, and biological agents, has accelerated. To clarify an incidence profile of drug-associated PML in real-world clinical practice, we analyzed reported patients with PML using the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report (JADER) database.

Methods: We analyzed PML reports extracted from the JADER database based on the preferred term of "progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy" from between 2004 and 2021.

We investigated factors involved in decision-making support provided by physicians, nurses, pharmacists and medical and psychiatric social workers involved in cancer care. A questionnaire survey on decision-making support was conducted. The level of clinician support was classified as 'supporting patients' 'decision-making process regarding cancer treatment', 'no support for patients' 'decision-making process regarding cancer treatment' or 'team-based support for patients' 'decision-making process regarding cancer treatment'.

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused mental health issues in both adults and adolescents. The Coronavirus Anxiety Scale (CAS) and Obsession with COVID-19 Scale (OCS) questionnaires measure anxiety and persistent and disturbed thoughts (also known as obsessions) related to COVID-19. • Acute aortic dissection (AAD) is a serious cardiovascular condition with incidence rates between 2.5 to 7.2 per 100,000 person-years in Western countries, but similar data is missing for Japan.
  • A study conducted in Shiga Prefecture over two years enrolled 402 AAD cases, identifying higher age-adjusted incidence rates of 15.8 and 12.2 per 100,000 person-years when compared to Japanese and European populations, respectively.
  • The findings revealed that patients with type A-AAD tend to be older and more likely to be female compared to those with type B-AAD.

The technique most widely used to quantitatively measure leg edema is only a pitting edema method. It has recently become possible to digitize B-mode ultrasound images and accurately quantify their brightness using an image-analysis software program. The purpose of this study was to find new indices of the grade of leg skin, to study whether or not analyses of the subcutaneous layer of leg skin on ultrasound images using image-editing software program can be used to evaluate it and to digitize it.

  • The study investigates genetic factors influencing hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and blood glucose levels in a non-diabetic Japanese population, using a two-phase genome-wide association study (GWAS).
  • The research involved 4911 initial participants and replicated findings with a larger sample size from the Tohoku Medical Megabank project, adjusting for variables such as age, sex, BMI, and smoking.
  • Results showed a specific genetic variant (rs2299620) linked to HbA1c levels, with its impact varying according to BMI categories, whereas no variants for blood glucose levels were successfully replicated.

Despite the clinical impact of dysphagia in myasthenia gravis (MG), a standard protocol for diagnosing dysphagia reliably has not yet been established. High-resolution manometry (HRM) provides precise information on pharyngeal pressure. We hypothesized that swallowing pressure assessment using HRM during the edrophonium chloride (EC) test could identify mild bulbar symptoms with no abnormalities on videoendoscopic (VE) and videofluorographic (VF) examination of swallowing, and we tested this hypothesis on a 72-year-old female patient diagnosed with ocular MG who developed slight pharyngeal discomfort over 3 months.

Objective: Low back pain (LBP) is a highly prevalent condition that poses significant patient burden. This cross-sectional study identified factors associated with LBP occurrence and developed a strategy to identify, prevent, and reduce LBP-related burden on patient health. A web-based questionnaire-answering system was used to assess the potential effects of LBP on mental health, assessing five domains (physical features, demographics, lifestyle, diet, and mental status) conceptually associated with hie, a common disease state traditionally described in the Japanese culture as a chilly sensation.
