Chronic inflammation is considered as an etiology of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Brown adipose tissue (BAT) of obese animals shows increased inflammation. Regular exercise has anti-inflammatory effects; however, the effects of exercise training on BAT inflammation in obese animals remain unclear.

Development of a Functional Bridge Test for Screening Impairments and Disabilities in Hemiplegic Patients with Acute Stroke while on the Bed.

Objectives: To provide a safe and appropriate out-of-bed program for stroke patients, screening for stroke-related functional impairments and disabilities should be performed in advance. However, few tools are available for clinical assessment of out-of-bed mobility while patients are still on bed. We sought to establish the validity and reliability of a newly developed Functional Bridge Test (FBT) for hemiplegic patients with acute stroke.

A predictive scoring system for small diaphragmatic defects in infants with congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

Purpose: To develop a predictive score for small diaphragmatic defects in infants with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) for determining thoracoscopic surgery indication.

Methods: The Japanese CDH Study Group cohort was randomly divided into derivation (n = 397) and validation (n = 396) datasets. Using logistic regression, a prediction model and weighted scoring system for small diaphragmatic defects were created from derivation dataset and validated with validation dataset.

Cardioprotection Using Strain-Guided Management of Potentially Cardiotoxic Cancer Therapy: 3-Year Results of the SUCCOUR Trial.

Background: Global longitudinal strain (GLS) can predict cancer therapeutics-related cardiac dysfunction and guide initiation of cardioprotection (CPT).

Objectives: In this study, the authors sought to determine whether echocardiography GLS-guided CPT provides less cardiac dysfunction in survivors of potentially cardiotoxic chemotherapy, compared with usual care at 3 years.

Methods: In this international multicenter prospective randomized controlled trial, patients were enrolled from 28 international sites.

Intra-Articular Leukocyte-Poor Platelet-Rich Plasma Injections for Japanese Patients With Osteoarthritis of the Knee: A Three-Year Observational Retrospective Study After Phase 1 and Phase 2a Trials.

Background: We have previously confirmed the safety and feasibility of intra-articular (IA) platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections in Japanese patients with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. This study aimed to investigate the clinical and radiological outcomes in patients who were followed up for three years.

Methods: Nine patients were evaluated in this observational study.

Association between subjective health status and frequency of visits to acupuncture clinic: A cross-sectional study.

Objective: There are few studies on the relationship between the frequency of acupuncture use and subjective health status. Therefore, we investigated this relationship using data of a previously performed cross-sectional survey of patients visiting Japanese acupuncture clinics.

Methods: This study used data from a cross-sectional survey conducted in 2011 on patients visiting 180 acupuncture clinics nationwide that were run by members of the alumni association of Meiji University of Integrative Medicine Faculty of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, and did not provide treatment other than acupuncture.

Synchondrosis fusion contributes to the progression of postnatal craniofacial dysmorphology in syndromic craniosynostosis.

Syndromic craniosynostosis (CS) patients exhibit early, bony fusion of calvarial sutures and cranial synchondroses, resulting in craniofacial dysmorphology. In this study, we chronologically evaluated skull morphology change after abnormal fusion of the sutures and synchondroses in mouse models of syndromic CS for further understanding of the disease. We found fusion of the inter-sphenoid synchondrosis (ISS) in Apert syndrome model mice (Fgfr2 ) around 3 weeks old as seen in Crouzon syndrome model mice (Fgfr2c ).

The efficacy of sequential therapy with docetaxel and cabazitaxel for castration-resistant prostate cancer: A retrospective multi-institutional study in Japan.

Objective: This study investigated the efficacy of docetaxel (DOC) and cabazitaxel (CBZ) and examined the factors associated with the prognosis of patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) receiving DOC-CBZ sequential treatment in Japanese real-world data.

Methods: We retrospectively evaluated data for 146 patients who received DOC followed by CBZ. The correlations of prostate specific antigen (PSA) decrease rate and time to progression between DOC and CBZ treatment were examined.

Belt Electrode-Skeletal Muscle Electrical Stimulation in Older Hemodialysis Patients with Reduced Physical Activity: A Randomized Controlled Pilot Study.

Background: Although patients receiving hemodialysis are more likely to develop metabolic disorders and muscle weakness at an earlier stage than healthy individuals, many older dialysis patients have difficulty establishing exercise habits to prevent these problems. Therefore, we evaluated the use of belt electrode-skeletal muscle electrical stimulation (B-SES), which can stimulate a wider area than conventional electrical muscle stimulation (EMS), to examine its application and safety in older hemodialysis patients as a means to improve lower extremity function without voluntary effort. Methods: This study was a randomized controlled trial (RCT) involving 20 older dialysis patients (>65 years old) with reduced physical activity.

First-line pembrolizumab ± chemotherapy for recurrent/metastatic head and neck cancer: Japanese subgroup of KEYNOTE-048.

Background: Here, we report the results of the Japanese subgroup of the phase 3 KEYNOTE-048 study of pembrolizumab alone, pembrolizumab plus platinum and 5-fluorouracil (pembrolizumab-chemotherapy), or cetuximab plus platinum and 5-fluorouracil (EXTREME) in previously untreated recurrent/metastatic (R/M) head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC).

Methods: Primary end points were overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS). Efficacy was evaluated in patients with PD-L1 combined positive score (CPS) ≥ 20 and ≥ 1 and the total Japanese subgroup (n = 67).

Objective: This study investigated differences among patients with impaired fasting glucose (IFG) and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c)-defined prediabetes (A1c-PDM); we compared insulin resistance and the prevalence of microalbuminuria (MAU) in these individuals.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is characterized by extensive microvascular hyperproliferation. In addition to supplying blood to the tumor, GBM vessels also provide trophic support to glioma cells and serve as conduits for migration into the surrounding brain, promoting recurrence. Here, we enrich CD31-expressing glioma vascular cells (GVCs) and A2B5-expressing glioma tumor cells (GTCs) from primary GBM and use RNA sequencing to create a comprehensive molecular interaction map of the secreted and extracellular factors elaborated by GVCs that can interact with receptors and membrane molecules on GTCs.

Limited behavioural effects of ocean acidification on a Mediterranean anemone goby (Gobius incognitus) chronically exposed to elevated CO levels.

An in situ reciprocal transplant experiment was carried around a volcanic CO vent to evaluate the anti-predator responses of an anemone goby species exposed to ambient (∼380 μatm) and high (∼850 μatm) CO sites. Overall, the anemone gobies displayed largely unaffected behaviors under high-CO conditions suggesting an adaptive potential of Gobius incognitus to ocean acidification (OA) conditions. This is also supported by its 3-fold higher density recorded in the field under high CO.

An Experimental Study of a 3D Bone Position Estimation System Based on Fluoroscopic Images.

To compare a 3D preoperative planning image and fluoroscopic image, a 3D bone position estimation system that displays 3D images in response to changes in the position of fluoroscopic images was developed. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the accuracy of the estimated position of 3D bone images with reference to fluoroscopic images. Bone positions were estimated from reference points on a fluoroscopic image compared with those on a 3D image.

TRANSFER OF CESIUM AND IODINE FROM THE SURFACE TO THE INTERIOR OF APPLE FRUIT.

We investigated the transfer of stable Cs + and I- applied as droplets directly on the fruit surface of 3-y-old plumleaf crab apple trees to the fruit interior at different developmental stages. The proportions of Cs and I transferred to the fruit flesh by harvest time were 21-66% and 41-53%, respectively, with decreasing trends as the developmental stage progressed. Most of the Cs+ was gradually transferred from the surface to the skin and flesh, while I- rapidly penetrated the fruit in the days after the application, followed by slow transfer of small proportions.

Posterior lumbar interbody fusion for dysplastic lumbar spondylolisthesis with high-grade slippage in two adolescent siblings: two case reports.

Background: Lumbar spondylolisthesis is reported to present with a familiar pattern, with the dysplastic type of spondylolysis being minor but more hereditary than the isthmic type. Siblings presenting during adolescence with neurological symptoms owing to high-grade dysplastic-type spondylolisthesis are rare.
