Article Synopsis
  • This study assesses the effectiveness of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for treating vestibular schwannomas (VS) in patients aged 75 and older, highlighting concerns about severe facial palsy in this age group after surgery.* -
  • A total of 156 patients aged 65 and older underwent gamma knife SRS, with the outcomes compared between those ≥75 years (35 patients) and those aged 65-74 years (121 patients), revealing high tumor control rates in both groups.* -
  • The findings suggest that SRS is a safe and effective treatment for VS in late elderly patients, with no adverse effects observed, and it offers advantages in preserving facial nerve function compared to surgical removal.*

The pathology of idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), a disease characterized by papillary edema and increased intracranial pressure (IICP), is not yet understood; this disease significantly affects quality of life due to symptoms including vision loss, headache, and pulsatile tinnitus. By contrast, superficial siderosis (SS), a disorder in which hemosiderin is deposited on the surface of the cerebral cortex and cerebellum, potentially causes cerebellar ataxia or hearing loss. So far, no cases of IIH with infratentorial and supratentorial cortical SS have been reported.

Care management of home-based long-term care is vital for community-dwelling older adults. Regarding care planning, which is a part of care management, appropriate care plans according to individual conditions are extremely important for older adults to continue living independently in their familiar environment for as long as possible. We compared the use of care services in the last year of life between advanced and conventional care management.

Objectives: We aimed to determine the association between changes in nutritional status and the activities of daily living (ADL) at discharge, considering frailty status of older patients with heart failure (HF).

Methods: This study included 491 older inpatients with HF categorized into the following groups based on their clinical frailty scale (CFS) scores: low, intermediate, and high. Changes in nutritional status were assessed using the Controlling Nutritional Status score at admission and discharge.

In contrast to other cancer research areas, the development of chemotherapy and radiotherapy for meningiomas has been challenging, lacking standardized criteria for assessing treatment response and progression. Although efforts by RANO have proposed evaluation criteria, a consensus on effective evaluation parameters for meningiomas remains elusive. This paper underscores the importance of establishing efficacy endpoints in clinical trials, compares efficacy assessment in meningioma research with other solid tumor areas, and outlines the challenges ahead in meningioma research.

Article Synopsis
  • - A new prognostic model was developed to predict cancer-specific survival (CSS) for patients with de novo metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (mHSPC) using data from 1,092 Japanese patients treated between 2014 and 2020.
  • - Key factors for predicting CSS included disease severity, liver metastasis, certain lab results, and primary tumor characteristics, leading to significant differences in 5-year CSS rates among low-risk (86%) and high-risk (22%) groups.
  • - This model displayed high accuracy and reproducibility, and it may help tailor treatment approaches for patients with mHSPC, especially in determining the intensity of therapies needed.

Article Synopsis
  • Bertolotti's syndrome occurs when the transverse process of the last lumbar vertebra enlarges and connects with the sacral alar, causing back pain, especially in athletes.
  • An adolescent basketball player experienced persistent left low back pain, which did not improve with conservative treatments, leading to an endoscopic surgical procedure to resect the enlarged bone.
  • Post-surgery, the patient reported immediate pain relief and successfully returned to basketball three months later, with positive outcomes and no complications noted one and two years after the operation.

Study Design: A single-center retrospective cohort study.

Objectives: To develop a predictive scoring system for bone union after conservative treatment of lumbar spondylolysis and assess its internal validity.

Summary Of Background Data: Lumbar spondylolysis, a common stress fracture in young athletes, is typically treated conservatively.

Spondylolysis with pseudarthrosis may be treated surgically by repairing the spondylolysis using the smiley face rod (SFR) technique. The SFR technique can avoid adjacent segmental disease caused by transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF), which is one of the main surgical techniques to treat isthmic lumbar spondylolisthesis. A 59-year-old woman had been playing softball since she was 12 years old and was a member of a prefectural representative team.

Article Synopsis
  • * Common signs like the groove sign and orange-peel sign may not be present at the disease's onset, complicating early detection.
  • * A case study of a 79-year-old woman showed that non-pitting edema with "joint sparing" and high eosinophil counts led to an early diagnosis of EF, highlighting their potential as important diagnostic indicators.

Background: Minimally invasive posterior fixation surgery for pyogenic spondylitis is known to reduce invasiveness and complication rates; however, the outcomes of concomitant insertion of pedicle screws (PS) into the infected vertebrae via the posterior approach are undetermined. This study aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of PS insertion into infected vertebrae in minimally invasive posterior fixation for thoracolumbar pyogenic spondylitis.

Methods: This multicenter retrospective cohort study included 70 patients undergoing minimally invasive posterior fixation for thoracolumbar pyogenic spondylitis across nine institutions.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examined nailfold capillary parameters in community-dwelling seniors over 60 with hypertension and low exercise levels to see how microcirculation relates to health indicators.
  • - Conducted at Tsukuba University of Technology in Japan, the pilot trial involved observing microcirculation before and after a 1-minute arm-curl exercise, revealing significant increases in capillary flow and density post-exercise.
  • - Results showed that even short bouts of exercise can enhance capillary function in elderly individuals, establishing connections between microvascular health and factors like body fat, physical activity, and bone density.

Background: Muscle-liver crosstalk plays an important role in the development and progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The measurement of muscle echo-intensity during ultrasonography is a real-time, non-invasive method of assessing muscle quality. In this retrospective study, we investigated the significance of poor muscle quality (namely, a greater mass of non-contractile tissue, including intramuscular fat) as a risk factor for advanced liver fibrosis and considered whether it may represent a useful tool for the diagnosis of advanced liver fibrosis.

Metal-oxide nanocomposites (MONs) are of pivotal importance as electrode materials, yet lack a guiding principle to tune their phase texture. Here we report that the phase texture of MONs can be tuned at the nanoscale by controlling the nanophase separation of precursor alloys. transmission electron microscopy ( TEM) has demonstrated that a MON material of platinum (Pt) and cerium oxide (CeO) is obtained through promoted nanophase separation of a PtCe precursor alloy in an atmosphere containing oxygen (O) and carbon monoxide (CO).

The ability of individuals with visual impairment to recognize an obstacle by hearing is called "obstacle sense". This ability is facilitated while they are moving, though the exact reason remains unknown. This study aims to clarify which acoustical factors may contribute to obstacle sense, especially obstacle distance perception.
