Article Synopsis
  • - The study explored how bereaved families perceive communication from doctors regarding stopping cancer treatments, focusing on the concept of "nudges" to guide decision-making.
  • - A survey with 350 families in palliative care revealed that clear explanations about the burdens and disadvantages of ongoing treatment, along with the benefits of stopping, were crucial for family decision-making.
  • - Effective communication, particularly around the specific advantages of not continuing treatment, led to lower demands for better explanations from physicians, suggesting that framing treatment discontinuation as a default option can aid families in their choices.

Differences in Characteristics Between Patients Who Met or Partly Met the Diagnostic Criteria for Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome (FPIES).

J Allergy Clin Immunol Pract

July 2024

Department of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, National Research Institute for Child Health and Development, Tokyo, Japan; Allergy Center, National Center for Child Health and Development, Tokyo, Japan. Electronic address:

Background: Some patients with food protein-induced enterocolitis (FPIES)-like allergy do not completely fulfill the diagnostic criteria of the international consensus guideline for FPIES. However, it is unclear whether such FPIES-like patients represent a completely different population from FPIES.

Objective: This study aimed to clarify differences in characteristics between patients with FPIES who fully met diagnostic criteria and those who partly met them.

Aims: Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is an established treatment for drug-refractory heart failure (HF) in patients with left bundle branch block (LBBB). Acute haemodynamic improvement after CRT implantation may enable the intensification of HF medication soon thereafter. Immediate pharmacotherapy intensification (IPI) after CRT implantation achieves a synergetic effect, possibly leading to a better prognosis.

Background: No accurate prognostic tool is available for patients with cancer who spend their final days at home. In this study, we examined whether performance status (PS) and the palliative prognostic index (PPI), a well-known prognostic tool in palliative care units, could be used to predict prognosis in the home care setting at the time of intervention by home physicians.

Subjects And Methods: Using medical records, we conducted a retrospective analysis of 132 patients who were referred to the Home Clinic Naginoki for home care for terminal stages of carcinoma in situ.

Objective: Intraoperative rebleeding during endovascular treatment for ruptured intracranial aneurysms is associated with poor prognosis. Lumbar drainage is performed preoperatively to control intracranial pressure; however, it is associated with a risk of brain herniation or rebleeding because intracranial pressure may change rapidly. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the efficacy and safety of preoperative lumbar drainage.
