Article Synopsis
  • * A study of 111 women found that 16.2% showed signs of LPT on X-rays, with lower trabecular bone scores (TBS) observed in those with LPT compared to those without, indicating compromised bone microarchitecture.
  • * The results suggest that prolonged use of bisphosphonates and glucocorticoids can lead to deteriorated bone quality, contributing to the risk of developing LPT, even though lumbar bone mineral density

In laparoscopic sigmoidectomy and rectal resection, intestinal tract irrigation is performed after temporary intestinal occlusion to prevent the dissemination of cancer cells in the intestine and to ensure a clean anastomosis. At this time, a temporary intestinal occlusion clip is used, but it may be difficult to place it at a predetermined position. Therefore, we made a small hole at the tip of the clip, made a loop with a thread that passed through it, grasped it, and manipulated the clip, such that it was relatively easy to place the clip in the proper position.

We observed a rare case of two different digestive paraneoplastic syndromes that improved with the treatment of the neoplasms. The first syndrome was chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIPO), which is a subtype of paraneoplastic syndromes called a paraneoplastic neurological syndrome (PNS). The second was Stauffer's syndrome, which is a unique paraneoplastic syndrome characterised by non-metastatic intrahepatic cholestasis associated with neoplasms.

Unlabelled: The incidence of localized periosteal thickening (LPT, also termed beaking) of the lateral cortex that often precedes an atypical femoral fracture (AFF) was not high in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) but incomplete AFFs developed in two patients. Higher-dose prednisolone was a significant risk factor for LPT in patients with RA.

Introduction: Atypical femoral fractures (AFFs) are stress fractures; bisphosphonate (BP) use is a major risk factor for the development of such fractures.

Background: The cystic duct has been included in the staging classification scheme for gallbladder cancer since the 2010 publication of the AJCC Cancer Staging Manual (7th edition). To our knowledge, only seven other cases of adenocarcinoma arising in the remnant cystic duct following cholecystectomy have been reported in the English-language literature, and none has been reported as primary early-stage T1b remnant cystic duct cancer (CDC). We report, herein, a case of primary adenocarcinoma arising in the remnant cystic duct in a patient with history of laparoscopic cholecystectomy for gallstone disease.

Localized hepatic tuberculosis (LHTB) is difficult to diagnose preoperatively, and most cases of LHTB are diagnosed based on pathological findings. A relationship between imaging features and the pathological stage of hepatic tuberculosis (TB) has recently been reported, which could aid in the diagnosis of hepatic TB. We herein present a case study of a patient with LHTB diagnosed postoperatively who demonstrated imaging changes due to the progression of TB.

Rupture of a pseudoaneurysm after pancreaticoduodenectomy is a fatal complication. To prevent this, we used the round ligament of the liver to separate the hepatic artery from pancreatic anastomosis, obtaining good results. The procedure involved detaching the round ligament of the liver from the abdominal wall during laparotomy and winding it from the proper and common hepatic artery mainly on a gastroduodenal artery stump after reconstruction.

This retrospective analysis investigated the prognostic value of monitoring the response to imatinib using peripheral blood (PB) samples and the impact of the response on outcome in 133 patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). We divided the response into 3 categories according to the results of neutrophil (N)-FISH and BCR-ABL transcript levels in PB; more than a 3-log reduction [major molecular response (MMR)], between a 2-log and 3-log reduction or negative with N-FISH [complete cytogenetic response equivalent (CCyRe)], N-FISH positive or less than a 2-log reduction (non-CCyRe). The median follow-up was 5.
