Objective: The aim of this study was to explore the factors affecting the major complications and the impacts of preoperative renal function on the incidence of complications in radical cystectomy procedures.

Methods: A retrospective review of 705 patients who received radical cystectomy between 2006 and 2021 was conducted. The 90-day complications of patients after a radical cystectomy were reported and the Clavien-Dindo classification (CDC) was used for grading complications.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study evaluates surgical outcomes in children with type IV-A choledochal cysts (CDC), focusing on postoperative complications like strictures and intrahepatic stones, which have previously been associated with a poor prognosis.
  • - Researchers analyzed 76 patients who underwent laparoscopic cyst excision and biliary reconstruction, categorizing them based on whether their intrahepatic duct dilatation normalized within a year post-surgery.
  • - Follow-up results showed a high normalization rate of intrahepatic duct size (73.7% of patients) after an average recovery time of 1.65 months, with few complications; however, factors such as biliary sludge and the duct's maximum diameter were found to influence recovery outcomes.

Background: Non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) is treated with transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) followed by intravesical instillation of chemotherapy or Bacillus Calmette-Guérin therapy. However, these treatments have a high recurrence rate and side effects, emphasizing the need for alternative instillations. Previously, we revealed that expanded allogeneic human natural killer (NK) cells from peripheral blood are a promising cellular therapy for prostate cancer.

Background: Positive surgical margins (PSM) is not only an independent risk factor for recurrence, metastasis, and prognosis, but also an important indicator of adjuvant therapy for prostate cancer (PCa) patients treated with radical prostatectomy (RP). At present, there are few reports analyzing risk factors of PSM in laparoscopic RP (LRP), especially for those PCa cases who accepted neoadjuvant hormonal therapy (NHT). Hence, the aim of the current study was to explore risk factors for PSM after LRP in PCa patients with and without NHT.

Introduction: The goal of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of needle-perc-assisted endoscopic surgery (NAES) in the treatment of staghorn renal stones via a single-center prospective randomized controlled study.

Methods: A total of 219 patients with partial or complete staghorn renal stones were prospectively randomized into two groups between January 2020 and April 2022. In group A (n = 112), patients were treated with traditional standard access, multiple if necessary, and in group B (n = 107), only one standard access was made, and needle-perc was assisted to remove the residual stones in the same stage.

Department of Health Technology and Informatics, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong, People's Republic of China.

Accurate and robust prostate segmentation in transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) images is of great interest for ultrasound-guided brachytherapy for prostate cancer. However, the current practice of manual segmentation is difficult, time-consuming, and prone to errors. To overcome these challenges, we developed an accurate prostate segmentation framework (A-ProSeg) for TRUS images.

Electronic address:

Castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) patients have a 14-month median survival, emphasizing the need for alternative treatments. Previously, we demonstrated that expanded high-dose natural killer (NK) cells derived from human peripheral blood exhibit therapeutic efficacy against CRPC. However, which immune checkpoint blockade promotes NK cell antitumor immunity against CRPC remains unknown.

Detecting the organ boundary in an ultrasound image is challenging because of the poor contrast of ultrasound images and the existence of imaging artifacts. In this study, we developed a coarse-to-refinement architecture for multi-organ ultrasound segmentation. First, we integrated the principal curve-based projection stage into an improved neutrosophic mean shift-based algorithm to acquire the data sequence, for which we utilized a limited amount of prior seed point information as the approximate initialization.

Accurate prostate segmentation in ultrasound images is crucial for the clinical diagnosis of prostate cancer and for performing image-guided prostate surgery. However, it is challenging to accurately segment the prostate in ultrasound images due to their low signal-to-noise ratio, the low contrast between the prostate and neighboring tissues, and the diffuse or invisible boundaries of the prostate. In this paper, we develop a novel hybrid method for segmentation of the prostate in ultrasound images that generates accurate contours of the prostate from a range of datasets.

Adult degenerative scoliosis (ADS) is a serious disease that often affects middle-aged and elderly people. ADS does not only cause sagittal and coronal deformity of the lumbar spine but also causes severe back and leg pain secondary to the compression of the neural structures. Open surgery remains the main method for correcting the occurring deformity and decompression of the neural structures; however, its benefit is limited in cases of large trauma.

Introduction: The high incidence of unsafe anaesthetic care leads to adverse events and increases the burden on patient safety. An important reason for unsafe anaesthesia care is the lack of non-technical skills (NTS), which are defined as personal cognitive, social or interpersonal skills, among anaesthetists. The anaesthetists' NTS (ANTS) behavioural marker system has been widely used to evaluate and improve anaesthetists' behavioural performance to ensure patient safety.
