Background: Pre-treatment sleep disturbance has been shown to predict antidepressant treatment outcomes. How changes in sleep disturbance during acute treatment affect longitudinal outcomes, or whether continuation-phase treatment further improves sleep disturbance, is unclear.
Methods: We assessed sleep disturbance repeatedly in: a) 523 adults with recurrent MDD who consented to 12-14 weeks of acute-phase cognitive therapy (A-CT) and b) 241 A-CT responders at elevated risk for depression relapse/recurrence who were randomized to 8 months of continuation-phase treatment (CCT vs.

Convergent evolution is often documented in organisms inhabiting isolated environments with distinct ecological conditions and similar selective regimes. Several Central America islands harbor dwarf Boa populations that are characterized by distinct differences in growth, mass, and craniofacial morphology, which are linked to the shared arboreal and feast-famine ecology of these island populations. Using high-density RADseq data, we inferred three dwarf island populations with independent origins and demonstrate that selection, along with genetic drift, has produced both divergent and convergent molecular evolution across island populations.

The number of school aged youth in the United States requiring assistance in the management of diabetes has reached over 200,000. School nurses are often charged with the training of personnel and provision of assistance to children with this chronic disease. The need for quick, efficient, and accessible training methods is necessary to ensure school nurses have the most current information necessary to perform their duties.

As relationship quality influences understanding and treatment of MDD, the current analyses clarified the relations of pretreatment dyadic discord with outcomes during and at the end of acute phase cognitive therapy (CT) for adults with recurrent MDD. Married or cohabiting patients (n = 219) completed the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DYS) before and after a 16-20 session, 12-14 week CT protocol.

We hypothesized that patients with weaker biological beliefs (less endorsement of [a] biochemical causes and [b] need for medication) and more optimistic treatment expectations (greater improvement and shorter time to improvement), have better outcomes in cognitive therapy (CT). Outpatients with recurrent MDD who received acute-phase CT (N = 152), and a subset of partial or unstable responders (N = 51) randomized to 8 months of continuation CT or fluoxetine with clinical management, completed repeated measures of beliefs, expectations, and depression.

A recent individual patient data meta-analysis showed that antidepressant medication is slightly more efficacious than cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in reducing overall depression severity in patients with a DSM-defined depressive disorder. We used an update of that dataset, based on seventeen randomized clinical trials, to examine the comparative efficacy of antidepressant medication vs. CBT in more detail by focusing on individual depressive symptoms as assessed with the 17-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression.

Objective: Acute-phase cognitive therapy (CT) is an efficacious treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD) producing benefits comparable to pharmacotherapy, but not all patients respond or remit. The purpose of the current analyses was to estimate CT patients' probability of nonresponse and remission from symptom improvement early in treatment.
Method: Data from 2 clinical trials of acute-phase CT for recurrent depression were pooled for analysis (N = 679).

Organosulfur compounds are important components of secondary organic aerosols (SOA). While the Aerodyne high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS) has been extensively used in aerosol studies, the response of the AMS to organosulfur compounds is not well-understood. Here, we investigated the fragmentation patterns of organosulfurs and inorganic sulfates in the AMS, developed a method to deconvolve total sulfate into components of inorganic and organic origins, and applied this method in both laboratory and field measurements.

DNA polymerase I from Thermus aquaticus ( Taq DNA polymerase) is useful for polymerase chain reactions because of its exceptional thermostability; however, its activity at low temperatures can cause amplification of unintended products. Mutation of isoleucine 707 to leucine (I707L) slows Taq DNA polymerase at low temperatures, which decreases unwanted amplification due to mispriming. In this work, unrestrained molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed on I707L and wild-type (WT) Taq DNA polymerase at 341 and 298 K to determine how the mutation affects the dynamic nature of the protein.

Ehrlichiosis is a zoonotic illness caused by Ehrlichia pathogens transmitted by ticks. Case data from 1999 to 2015, provided by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS), were used to compare the seasonality and the change in incidence over time of ehrlichiosis infection in two Missouri ecoregions, Eastern Temperate Forest (ETF) and Great Plains (GP). Although the number of cases has increased over time in both ecoregions, the rate of change was significantly faster in ETF region.

Waterhemp [ (Moq.) Sauer] is a problematic dicot weed in maize, soybean, and cotton production in the United States. Waterhemp has evolved resistance to several commercial herbicides that inhibit the 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate-dioxygenase (HPPD) enzyme in sensitive dicots, and research to date has shown that HPPD-inhibitor resistance is conferred by rapid oxidative metabolism of the parent compound in resistant populations.

Besides impairment in cognition and memory, patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) often exhibit marked dysfunction in respiratory control. Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is commonly found in cases of AD, resulting in periods of hypoxia during sleep. Early structural changes in brainstem areas controlling respiratory function may account for SDB in the course of AD.

We recently reported a real-time method to measure heparin in human whole blood based on the photoacoustic change of methylene blue (MB). Intriguingly, the MB behaved unlike other "turn on" photoacoustic probes-the absorbance decreased as the photoacoustic signal increased. The underlying mechanism was not clear and motivated this study.
