Article Synopsis
  • Dental anxiety is common and can lead patients to avoid important periodontal care. This study aimed to understand how non-surgical periodontal treatment (NSPT) affects dental anxiety in patients with periodontitis.* -
  • The study involved 122 patients, with one group receiving NSPT and another experiencing delayed treatment. Their dental anxiety levels were measured using the Modified Dental Anxiety Scale (MDAS) at the beginning and after treatment.* -
  • Results showed that the NSPT group had significantly lower anxiety scores after treatment compared to the delayed group, suggesting that undergoing NSPT helps reduce dental anxiety and may encourage better adherence to ongoing periodontal care.*

It has been said, 'Bone sets the tone, but tissue is the issue.' In the field of implantology, while significant breakthroughs have been achieved in hard tissue regeneration, clinicians find it more challenging to handle soft tissue complications around dental implants. Successfully managing soft tissue around dental implants requires clinicians to have comprehensive knowledge of proper implant placement, prosthetic design and tissue management, and a high level of surgical skills for soft tissue augmentation and grafting.

Article Synopsis
  • Study Overview
  • : This research is a phase II randomized trial comparing the effectiveness and safety of pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (PLD) versus epirubicin as adjuvant chemotherapy for stage I-II HER2-negative breast cancer.
  • Methods and Results
  • : A total of 256 patients were divided into two groups, with results showing no significant difference in 5-year disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) rates between PLD and epirubicin. However, the PLD group experienced less severe side effects and improved quality of life (QoL) during treatment.
  • Conclusion
  • : Both treatment regimens showed comparable efficacy and safety, but the

Medical advances prolonging life have led to more permanent pacemaker implants. When pacemaker implantation (PMI) is commonly caused by sick sinus syndrome or conduction disorders, predicting PMI is challenging, as patients often experience related symptoms. This study was designed to create a deep learning model (DLM) for predicting future PMI from ECG data and assess its ability to predict future cardiovascular events.

Associations of Cardiorespiratory Fitness and Muscular Endurance Fitness With Pulmonary Function in Physically Active Young Adults.

Arch Bronconeumol

January 2025

Department of Medicine, Hualien Armed Forces General Hospital, Hualien City, Taiwan; Department of Medicine, Tri-Service General Hospital and National Defense Medical Center, Taipei, Taiwan. Electronic address:

Rationale: While the beneficial effects of physical fitness on general health are well-documented, the specific relationship between different types of physical fitness, particularly cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and muscular endurance fitness (MEF), and lung function in physically active young adults remains less explored.

Objective: This study investigated the relationship between CRF and MEF, and their correlation with lung function in physically active young adults.

Methods: This cross-sectional study involved a cohort of 1227 physically active young adults without lung diseases.

Moderate physical activity is related to reduced mortality in hemodialysis patients. However, most hemodialysis patients have low physical activity levels for complex reasons. This study investigated the determinants of moderate-to-high physical activity levels and whether psychosocial correlates are associated with engagement in moderate-to-high physical activity among hemodialysis patients.

Artificial Intelligence-Clinical Decision Support System in Infectious Disease Control: Combatting Multidrug-Resistant with Machine Learning.

Infect Drug Resist

July 2024

Division of Clinical Pathology, Department of Pathology, Tri-Service General Hospital, National Defense Medical Center, Taipei City, Taiwan, Republic of China.

Purpose: The World Health Organization has identified (KP) as a significant threat to global public health. The rising threat of carbapenem-resistant (CRKP) leads to prolonged hospital stays and higher medical costs, necessitating faster diagnostic methods. Traditional antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST) methods demand at least 4 days, requiring 3 days on average for culturing and isolating the bacteria and identifying the species using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), plus an extra day for interpreting AST results.

This study aimed to define the role of heterogeneity of liver parenchymal enhancement on computed tomography (CT) in the survival of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after hepatic resection. The medical records of patients with HCCs and who had undergone hepatic resection were retrospectively reviewed. The standard deviation (SD) of three different enhanced CT scan images was used to estimate the heterogeneity of liver parenchymal enhancement: SD of > 5.

We conducted a prospective evaluation for the dynamic change of γδT cells in peripheral blood (PB) and N-telopeptide of type I collagen in urine (uNTX) of patients diagnosed with multiple myeloma (MM) who underwent their initial treatment with zoledronic acid (ZOA; Zobonic®, TTY, Taiwan). Between March 2012 and November 2015, a total of 35 patients were enrolled, including 25 newly diagnosed MM (NDMM) patients. The percentage of γδT cells in PB was assessed at 20 days prior to the first ZOA infusion, then at day 8, day 64, and day 85 after the infusion.

Objective: Identification of heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) cases in primary care settings is often done by using pictorial blood assessment charts (PBAC). The study aims to highlight the challenge of assessing blood loss, to develop a standardized method to efficiently customize a patient-reported pictorial chart, to validate the tool produced with our proposed method, and to demonstrate the feasibility of using PBACs in settings where resources are scarce.

Materials And Methods: Using blood samples and feedback from 21 women aged 30-51 years, we followed guidelines suggested in the literature, developed a method to produce PBACs for regular, long and night sizes, and had 9 participants testuse them.

Interobserver variations in the pathology of common astrocytic tumors impact diagnosis and subsequent treatment decisions. This study leveraged a residual neural network-50 (ResNet-50) in digital pathological images of diffuse astrocytoma, anaplastic astrocytoma, and glioblastoma to recognize characteristic pathological features and perform classification at the patch and case levels with identification of incorrect predictions. In addition, cellularity and nuclear morphological features, including axis ratio, circularity, entropy, area, irregularity, and perimeter, were quantified via a hybrid task cascade (HTC) framework and compared between different characteristic pathological features with importance weighting.

The nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase 4 (NOX4) protein plays an essential role in the cisplatin (CDDP)-induced generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this study, we evaluated the suitability of ultrasound-mediated lysozyme microbubble (USMB) cavitation to enhance NOX4 siRNA transfection in vitro and ex vivo. Lysozyme-shelled microbubbles (LyzMBs) were constructed and designed for siNOX4 loading as siNOX4/LyzMBs.
