In patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, cryoballoon ablation (CBA) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) represent two therapeutic approaches supported by increasing literature. While both these ablation techniques play a role during different stages of the patient's therapeutic pathway, their use as first-line is being increasingly recognized. This scoping review comparatively examined the evidence of effectiveness for these two ablation techniques.

The increased radioresistence of healthy tissues when irradiated at very high dose rates (known as the Flash effect) is a radiobiological mechanism that is currently investigated to increase the therapeutic ratio of radiotherapy treatments. To maximize the benefits of the clinical application of Flash, a patient-specific balance between different properties of the dose distribution should be found, that is, Flash needs to be one of the variables considered in treatment planning. We investigated the Flash potential of three proton therapy planning and beam delivery techniques, each on a different anatomical region.

Introduction: Apolipoprotein C-III (Apo CIII) is a crucial regulator of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins (TRLs) and influences the risk of cardiovascular diseases. High levels of Apo CIII have been also associated with cerebrovascular events and earlier works showed procoagulant effects of Apo CIII. The main aim was to assess whether the plasma concentration of Apo CIII could confer an increased risk of cerebral ischemic events in anticoagulated patients at high-risk of cardioembolism.

Introduction: Abdominal wall complications are common after kidney transplantation, and although they have a minor impact on patient and graft survival, they increase the patient's morbidity and may have an impact on quality of life. Abdominal wall complications have an overall incidence of 7.7-21%.

Re-usable air/water and suction valves used in endoscopes often demonstrate risk of infection. To the authors' knowledge, the safety and efficacy of re-usable and single-use valves have not been compared to date. As such, a laboratory investigation was undertaken to compare the safety and efficacy of re-usable and single-use valves at 11 Italian endoscopy sites.

Objective: The contemporary diagnosis of paraneoplastic neurologic syndromes (PNSs) requires an increasing understanding of their clinical, immunologic, and oncologic heterogeneity. The 2004 PNS criteria are partially outdated due to advances in PNS research in the last 16 years leading to the identification of new phenotypes and antibodies that have transformed the diagnostic approach to PNS. Here, we propose updated diagnostic criteria for PNS.

Hemangioblastoma is a rare benign vascular tumour of the central nervous system that occurs either sporadically or in association with Von Hippel-Lindau syndrome. Hemangioblastoma can be found throughout the central nervous system and usually present with late manifestations due to their slow growth rate. Cauda equina hemangioblastomas are extremely rare, and in the literature, no cases are reported on the surgical management of pregnant patients with this condition.

Patients affected with gliomas develop a complex set of clinical manifestations that deeply impact on quality of life and overall survival. Brain tumor-related epilepsy is frequently the first manifestation of gliomas or may occur during the course of disease; the underlying mechanisms have not been fully explained and depend on both patient and tumor factors. Novel treatment options derive from the growing use of third-generation antiepileptic drugs.

Background: Thoracoscopic lobectomy (VATS-L) for non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a well-established option for early stage NSCLC, but the evidences are limited for octogenarians.
Objective: The objectives of this multi-institutional study were to evaluate the post-operative outcomes of VATS-L in octogenarians and to estimate the post-operative quality of life (QoL) using a validated questionnaire (EuroQoL5D).
Methods: Data from patients underwent VATS-L between 2014 and 2019 were analysed and divided into two groups: Group A (younger patients) and Group B (octogenarians).

Osteolipoma is a benign neoplasm originating from the mesenchymal fat tissue cells and characterized by the presence of bone formation. In the head and neck district osteolipoma has been described as parapharyngeal, nasopharinx, submandibular gland, eyelid, floor of the mouth, and skull base lesion. Only 1 case of osteolipoma was reported as a neoplasm of the parotid region.

Therefore, this study aimed to characterise impact of high income countries (HIC) versus low and middle income countries (LMIC) on the outcomes following esophagectomy for esophageal cancer.
Method: This international multi-center prospective study across 137 hospitals in 41 countries included patients who underwent an esophagectomy for esophageal cancer, with 90-day follow-up.

Background And Objective: Major deficits in the autonomic nervous system function, detected by measuring heart rate variability (HRV), are reported in neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE)). However, it is unknown if they will recover in the long-term. Because of the possible implications for the neurological outcome, this study aimed to evaluate the HRV at school age, in a cohort of children who survived HIE managed with therapeutic hypothermia.
