Background: Platelets and lymphocytes levels are important in assessing systemic disorders, reflecting inflammatory and immune responses. This study investigated the relationship between blood parameters (platelet count (PLT), mean platelet volume (MPV), lymphocyte count (LINF), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR)) and osteoarthritis (OA) severity, considering age, sex, and body mass index (BMI).
Methods: Patients aged ≥40 years were included in this cross-sectional study and divided into groups based on knee OA severity using the Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grading system.

Background: In this study, we hypothesized that safety footwear (SF) impacts gait patterns, potentially contributing to the podiatric symptoms reported by workers. The purpose of this work was to compare the gait analyses of workers wearing SF and sneakers using inertial sensors while also examining the occurrence of foot problems.
Methods: A consecutive cohort of workers from different occupational sectors who wore SF during their work shifts were prospectively assessed through a gait analysis.

Background: Tenosynovial giant cell tumor (TGCT) is a rare, locally aggressive tumor of the joints, bursa, and tendon sheath that can cause considerable pain and substantial morbidity. Although surgery is the primary treatment for patients with TGCT, surgical resection is associated with high rates of recurrence, particularly for patients with diffuse TGCT. Pexidartinib, a colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor inhibitor, is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of adult patients with symptomatic TGCT associated with severe morbidity or functional limitations and not amenable to improvement with surgery.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFIntroduction: Extraskeletal Ewing sarcoma (EEwS) is a rare malignant tumor, and current international recommendations indicate systemic and local treatment like bone Ewing sarcoma (BEwS); to the best of our knowledge, very few studies tried to explore the clinical and genetic characteristics of this tumor, and the most appropriate treatment strategy remains uncertain.
Methods: We reviewed 35 EEwS cases enrolled at Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute in Bologna, Italy, between 1988-2022. We performed RNA sequencing in 18 Ewing sarcoma cases, including 12 BEwSs and 6 EEwSs.
Purpose: This retrospective radiological analysis aimed to assess the accuracy of implant positioning in patients with ankle arthritis undergoing custom-made total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) with patient-specific instrumentation (PSI) compared with preoperative planning.
Methods: Patients who underwent custom-made TAA with PSI from January 2018 to March 2023 were retrospectively evaluated, focusing on the tibial anterior surface (TAS) angle, tibial lateral surface (TLS) angle and tibiotalar ratio (TTR). Additionally, data regarding the time from the preoperative computed tomography (CT) scan to surgery, associated procedures and complications were recorded.

Retrograde Drilling (RD) is a surgical technique employed for osteochondral lesions of the talus (OCLTs) to reach the subchondral bone lesion from behind, thus preserving cartilage integrity. The aim of the present pilot study was to set up an in vitro model of OCLTs to evaluate the regenerative potential of biological approaches that could be associated with the RD technique. For this purpose, an OCLT was created in human osteochondral specimens, to try to mimic the RD technique, and to compare the regenerative potential of two biological treatments.

Purpose: This retrospective study aims to compare surgical outcomes between two cohorts of patients who underwent total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) using either standard technique or patient-specific instrumentation (PSI).
Methods: A consecutive series of patients who affected of end-staged ankle osteoarthritis were retrospectively assessed and divided into two groups based on TAA techniques: a TAA standard technique group and a TAA-using PSI group. The two groups were compared in terms of operative time, additional procedures, complications (neurovascular and wound problems, infection, loosening and osteolysis, revision and explantation rates, and perioperative fracture), clinical scores, and range of motion (ROM).

Aging comes with the loss of muscle and bone mass, leading to a condition known as osteosarcopenia. Circulating, cellular, and tissue biomarkers research for osteosarcopenia is relatively scarce and, currently, no established biomarkers exist. Here we find that osteosarcopenic patients exhibited elevated basophils and TNFα levels, along with decreased aPPT, PT/INR, IL15, alpha-Klotho, DHEA-S, and FGF-2 expression and distinctive bone and muscle tissue micro-architecture and biomarker expressions.
