The thalassemia issue is a growing worldwide health concern that anticipates the number of patients suffering from the disease will soon increase significantly. Patients with β-thalassemia intermedia (β-TI) manifest mild to intermediate levels of anemia, which is a reason for it to be clinically located between thalassemia minor and β-thalassemia major (β-TM). Notably, the determination of the actual rate of β-TI is more complicated than β-TM.

Purpose: Osteoarthritis of the knee is commonly associated with malalignment of the lower limb. Recent classifications, as the Coronal Plane Alignment of the Knee (CPAK) and Functional Phenotype classification, describe the bony knee morphology in addition to the overall limb alignment. Data on distribution of these classifications is not sufficient in large populations.

Background: Multi-organ dysfunction syndrome and multi-organ failure are the leading causes of late death in patients sustaining severe blunt trauma. So far, there is no established protocol to mitigate these sequelae. This study assessed the effect of hemoperfusion using resin-hemoadsorption 330 (HA330) cartridges on mortality and complications such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) among such patients.

Background: Low energy falls (LEF) in older adults constitute a relevant cause for emergency department (ED) visits, hospital admission and in-hospital mortality. Patient-reported outcome measures containing information about patients' medical, mental and social health problems might support disposition and therapy decisions. We investigated the value of a tablet-based (self-)assessment in predicting hospital admission and in-hospital mortality.

Optimal blood pressure targets following successful mechanical thrombectomy remain uncertain. While some observational studies suggest that the relationship between blood pressure and outcomes follows a -shaped curve, others suggest a linear relationship where lower is better. The recent BP-TARGET study (Blood Pressure Target in Acute Stroke to Reduce Hemorrhage After Endovascular Therapy) did not find a benefit to intensive blood pressure lowering regarding the risk of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage, but it was not sufficiently powered to detect differences in functional outcomes.

Background: Nerve entrapment has been hypothesized to contribute to the multicausal etiology of axonopathy in sensorimotor diabetic neuropathy. Targeted surgical decompression reduces external strain on the affected nerve and, therefore, may alleviate symptoms, including pain and sensory dysfunction. However, its therapeutic value in this cohort remains unclear.
