Electronic address:

Background: There is a common concern that range of motion (ROM) is negatively affected by the Latarjet procedure. We hypothesize that the Latarjet procedure results in full recovery of ROM postoperatively and significantly improved patient-reported outcome measures.

Methods: Patient data were prospectively collected from a randomized controlled trial to analyze outcomes after open Latarjet procedure.

Is it necessary to graft the void defect during open reduction and internal fixation of calcaneal fractures?

Musculoskelet Surg

June 2024

Bone and Joint Diseases Research Center, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, School of Medicine, Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, Shiraz, Iran.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the impact of grafting on the outcomes of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) in patients with calcaneal fractures, comparing those who received bone grafts to those who did not.
  • 60 patients with unilateral closed Sanders type II calcaneal fractures were assessed for radiological and functional outcomes over an average follow-up of 25.1 months, using various pain and function metrics.
  • Results showed no significant differences in most measurements between the two groups, although the group with bone grafts reported slightly less pain and had more favorable talar declination angles.

Dealing with massive and irreparable rotator cuff tears presents intricate challenges. Concerning elder patients, either conservative management or reverse shoulder arthroplasty could be the most appropriate treatment. On the other hand, in younger patients, there is a wide spectrum of solutions, most of them being under evaluation and not completely validated.

Introduction: The inflammatory response to burn injuries can lead to organ dysfunction that ultimately results in increased mortality and morbidity. This meta-analysis was conducted to determine the efficacy of inflammatory biomarkers, including the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), procalcitonin (PCT), and C-reactive protein (CRP) as predictive tools of mortality among burn patients.

Material And Methods: The biomarker levels of survivors and non-survivors were consolidated according to guidelines for Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA).

Background: Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), being the most common thyroid malignancy, is a slow-growing tumor and is usually limited to the thyroid. Extra thyroid extension is uncommon; besides, invasion to the vasculature seems to be extremely rare and usually indicates aggressive nature of the disease.

Case Presentation: We present a case of a 40-year-old lady who referred with a palpable neck mass a month after total thyroidectomy which its histopathologic examination revealed follicular variant of PTC; the same variant as prior thyroidectomy.

Aims: Our previous 3-period crossover study in healthy volunteers comparing the pharmacokinetics of nalbuphine nasal spray Apain with parenteral nalbuphine solution demonstrated high bioavailability of the nasal spray and close similarity of pharmacokinetic profiles after intranasal and intramuscular administration, especially within 30 min postdose. The aim of the present study was a noninferiority assessment of nalbuphine nasal spray vs. intramuscular injection for pain relief in postoperative patients.

Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) as a large group of synthetic compounds widely contaminated the environment and lead to health problems. However, the correlation between PFAS exposure, bone health parameters and osteoporosis remains controversial. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of published literature to evaluate the effects of PFAS on human bone health.

Early resuscitation using blood products is critical for patients with severe hemorrhagic shock. We aimed to develop and validate a new scoring system, hemorrhagic shock transfusion prediction (HSTP) score, to predict the need for massive transfusion (MT) in these patients, compared to the widely used Assessment of Blood Consumption (ABC) score. Trauma patients admitted to Emtiaz Hospital in Iran from 2017 to 2021 were retrospectively included.

Article Synopsis
  • Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a type of cancer that is very hard to treat and often not found until it's too late, leading to a low survival rate.
  • There are no good treatments for this cancer, and most patients can't respond well to chemotherapy, which makes it difficult to manage.
  • Researchers are studying special kinds of molecules called non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) to see how they can help in finding this cancer earlier and developing better treatments for people with PDAC.

Background: We conducted this systematic review to compile the evidence for the role of neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in odontogenic infection (OI) and to determine whether NLR is elevated in patients with OI. This was done to aid physicians in better understanding this condition for clinical management.

Methods: The search was conducted on PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science libraries on March 30, 2023.

Moderate traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a diagnosis that describes diverse patients with heterogeneity of primary injuries. Defined by a Glasgow Coma Scale between 9 and 12, this category includes patients who may neurologically worsen and require increasing intensive care resources and/or emergency neurosurgery. Despite the unique characteristics of these patients, there have not been specific guidelines published before this effort to support decision-making in these patients.

Nail fixation of unstable trochanteric fractures with or without cement augmentation: A cost-utility analysis in the United States: Cost-utility of cement augmentation.

Injury

April 2024

Department of Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery, Musculoskeletal University Center Munich (MUM), University Hospital, LMU Munich, Munich, Germany; AUVA Trauma Hospital Styria, Graz, Austria; AUVA Trauma Hospital Styria, Kalwang, Austria. Electronic address:

Objectives: Recent clinical studies have shown favorable outcomes for cement augmentation for fixation of trochanteric fracture. We assessed the cost-utility of cement augmentation for fixation of closed unstable trochanteric fractures from the US payer's perspective.

Methods: The cost-utility model comprised a decision tree to simulate clinical events over 1 year after the index fixation surgery, and a Markov model to extrapolate clinical events over patients' lifetime, using a cohort of 1,000 patients with demographic and clinical characteristics similar to that of a published randomized controlled trial (age ≥75 years, 83 % female).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the impact of low fibrinogen levels on the mortality and functional outcomes of traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients at Rajaee Hospital in Iran.
  • A total of 3049 TBI patients were analyzed, revealing that those with fibrinogen levels below 150 mg/dL were younger and had lower Glasgow Coma Scale scores.
  • Findings indicate that low fibrinogen levels are a significant risk factor for in-hospital mortality but do not strongly predict long-term functional outcomes after six months.
