Aim: High-resolution respirometry in human permeabilized muscle fibers is extensively used for analysis of mitochondrial adaptions to nutrition and exercise interventions, and is linked to athletic performance. However, the lack of standardization of experimental conditions limits quantitative inter- and intra-laboratory comparisons.
Methods: In our study, an international team of investigators measured mitochondrial respiration of permeabilized muscle fibers obtained from three biopsies (vastus lateralis) from the same healthy volunteer to avoid inter-individual variability.

Mitochondria have diverse functions critical to whole-body metabolic homeostasis. Endurance training alters mitochondrial activity, but systematic characterization of these adaptations is lacking. Here, the Molecular Transducers of Physical Activity Consortium mapped the temporal, multi-omic changes in mitochondrial analytes across 19 tissues in male and female rats trained for 1, 2, 4, or 8 weeks.

Background And Aims: The primary goals of this study were to clarify 1) the effect of weight loss by lifestyle intervention on circulating total angiopoietin-like protein 8 (ANGPTL8), and 2) the role of physical activity on serum total ANGPTL8 in northern Americans with obesity but without diabetes.
Methods And Results: A total of 130 subjects with body mass index (BMI) ≧ 35 kg/m but without diabetes were recruited, and 121 subjects completed a weight loss program for data analysis. Abdominal adipose tissue was determined by non-contrast computed tomography (CT).

NAD is a crucial cellular factor that plays multifaceted roles in wide ranging biological processes. Low levels of NAD have been linked to numerous diseases including metabolic disorders, cardiovascular disease, neurodegeneration, and muscle wasting disorders. A novel strategy to boost NAD is to activate nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (NAMPT), the putative rate-limiting step in the NAD salvage pathway.

Nanoerythrosomes (NERs), vesicle-like nanoparticles derived from red blood cells, represent a new and interesting vector for therapeutic molecules and imaging probes, mainly thanks to their high stability and excellent biocompatibility. Aiming to present a proof-of-concept of the use of NERs as diagnostic tools for in vitro/in vivo imaging purposes, we report here several functionalization routes to decorate the surfaces of NERs derived from bovine blood with two different fluorophores: 7-amino-4-methylcumarin and dibenzocyclooctinecyanine5.5.

Recess time (RT) is a main component of school-based activities, and could contribute up to 40% of the physical activity (PA) recommended in the health guidelines. The main goal was to analyze the association between accelerometer-measured PA and sedentary time during RT with cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF). A total of 146 children and adolescents, aged 8-19 years, were recruited from six schools.
