Purpose: The aim of this consensus was to develop evidence- and expert-based patient-focused recommendations on the appropriateness of intra-articular platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections in different clinical scenarios of patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA).

Methods: The RAND/UCLA Appropriateness Method was used by the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery, and Arthroscopy (ESSKA), as well as the International Cartilage Regeneration and Joint Preservation Society (ICRS) to reach a consensus and produce recommendations for specific patient categories combining best available scientific evidence with the collective judgement of a panel of experts.

Results: Scenarios were defined based on first treatment vs first injective treatment vs second injective treatment, age (<50/50-65/66-80/>80), tibiofemoral vs patellofemoral involvement, OA level (Kellgren-Lawrence/KL 0-I/II-III/IV), and joint effusion (dry knee, minor-mild or major effusion).

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the long-term objective biomechanical and functional parameters of a high-flexion total knee arthroplasty (TKA) design against healthy older adults to determine whether knee biomechanics are comparable in both populations.

Methods: One cohort of patients with a primary TKA, and a cohort of healthy adults over 55 years old with no musculoskeletal deficits or arthritis participated. Bilateral knee range of motion (RoM) was assessed with a goniometer, and gait patterns were analysed with a three-dimensional-motion capture system.

Article Synopsis
  • The NHS in Britain is increasingly focused on understanding patient experience due to policy failures and media scrutiny, relying mainly on satisfaction surveys for data.
  • The study utilized existential phenomenology to gather in-depth narratives from 12 participants, highlighting aspects of patient experience that satisfaction surveys can't capture.
  • Key themes from the interviews included feelings of uncertainty, suffering, the ineffectiveness of feedback, and a sense of vulnerability during hospital admissions, showcasing how individual personalities influence responses to illness and hospital care.

Children and young people (CYP) can be empowered to take on roles as agents of change in their own communities. CYP want to be heard and should be actively involved in the co-production, design and development of services aimed at them to ensure that the resulting services are acceptable and accessible. Little analysis of the framing and discourse of co-production in different contexts has been undertaken.

Backgrounds & Aims: Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is a chronic liver disease in which autoimmune destruction of the small intrahepatic bile ducts eventually leads to cirrhosis. Many patients have inadequate response to licensed medications, motivating the search for novel therapies. Previous genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and meta-analyses (GWMA) of PBC have identified numerous risk loci for this condition, providing insight into its aetiology.

Background: The NHS Mental Health Implementation Plan aims to reduce length of inpatient psychiatric stays to a maximum of 32 days, yet provides little guidance on how to achieve this. Previous studies have attempted to analyse factors influencing length of stay in mental health units, focussing mostly on patient factors. These models fail to sufficiently explain the variation in duration of inpatient stay.

The recognition of the primacy of enthesitis in animal models of spondyloarthritis and the prevalence of clinically occult enthesopathy in psoriatic subjects and of persistent joint pain in PsA subjects who have ostensibly good reduction of joint swelling under biological therapy has highlighted the potential impact of polyenthesitis in psoriatic disease. In daily practice, the formal demonstration of enthesitis is challenging for the following reasons: the relatively avascular nature of enthesis, often leading to the absence of overt clinical inflammatory signs; the frequent lack of elevation of inflammatory markers; and finally, the limitations of current imaging techniques to provide supportive evidence for inflammation in these areas. Consequently, enthesitis may present as widespread pain indistinguishable from FM or may emerge as the dominant feature after successful biological therapy for suppression of synovitis.
