Background: Ivermectin is an antiparasitic drug administered to hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Fundamental research suggests that ivermectin is effective against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19); therefore, we investigated the efficacy and safety of ivermectin as a COVID-19 treatment option.
Methods: This multi-regional (Japan and Thailand), multicenter, placebo-controlled, randomized, double-blind, parallel-group, Phase III study evaluated the efficacy and safety of ivermectin in patients with mild COVID-19 (IVERMILCO Study).

Local control of disintegrating advanced breast cancer is often difficult because of the exudate, bleeding, and the foul odor. The current author encountered a case of large breast cancer with ulceration in which drug therapy and local control with Mohs' paste allowed disease control. The patient was a 61-year-old woman.

Peripheral sensory nerve electrical stimulation (PES) excites the primary motor cortex and is expected to improve motor dysfunction post-stroke. However, previous studies have reported a variety of stimulus frequencies and stimulus duration settings, and the effects of these different combinations on primary motor cortex excitability are not clear. We aimed to clarify the effects of different combinations of stimulus frequency and stimulus duration of PES on the excitation of primary motor cortex.

Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor (SGLT2i)-incorporated medical therapy is associated with cardiac function improvement in patients with heart failure. However, the factors associated with such an improvement remain unknown. This study included patients with heart failure and type 2 diabetes mellitus who received SGLT2i-incorporated medical therapy in our institute.

A male patient in his 70s visited our hospital with a complaint of tarry stool. A detailed examination revealed gastric cancer( pap, tub1, HER2[3+]), with multiple lungs and liver metastases. Chemotherapy with 4 courses of capecitabine, cisplatin, and trastuzumab(Tmab)and 4 courses of weekly paclitaxel(wPTX)plus 3w-Tmab were administered, and CR was achieved.

Genetic testing using reverse transcriptase real-time polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) is the mainstay of diagnosis of COVID-19. However, it has not been fully investigated whether infectious viruses are contained in SARS-CoV-2 genome-positive specimens examined using the rRT-PCR test. In this study, we examined the correlation between the threshold Cycle (Ct) value obtained from the rRT-PCR test and virus isolation in cultured cells, using 533 consecutive clinical specimens of COVID-19 patients.

Introduction: Occupational therapy often involves handwriting acquisition practices that include the non-dominant hand when improvements in the dominant hand function are not possible because of trauma or stroke. This study explored whether character tracing and using a pegboard can effectively improve the handwriting of the non-dominant hand.
Methods: A randomised controlled trial involving 60 healthy university students aged ≥18 years was conducted.

Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor (SGLT2i) reduces mortality and morbidity in patients with chronic heart failure (HF). However, the clinical implication of SGLT2i therapy in patients with acute decompensated HF remains uncertain. We prospectively studied 86 type 2 diabetic mellitus (T2DM) patients (71.

The DAPA-HF trial demonstrated that sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) reduced worsening heart failure (HF) events in chronic HF patients with or without type 2 diabetic mellitus (T2DM). However, it remains unclear whether the effectiveness of SGLT2i is also observed in patients with decompensated HF irrespective of HbA1c level. Eighty-one T2DM patients hospitalized due to decompensated HF were enrolled and divided into 2 groups according to their HbA1c levels (group H, HbA1c 6.

Background: Chronic subdural hematomas (CSDHs) mainly occur in elderly people and usually develop after minor head injuries. CSDH can be cured by a relatively simple burr hole surgery. Rarely reported, hemorrhagic postsurgical complications include subarachnoid, intracerebral, intraventricular, and remote cerebellar hemorrhages.

Pleural mesothelioma is a disease with a very poor prognosis. Here, we report a mesothelioma patient who survived for 5 years and a half. As a result of the autopsy, the tumor was diagnosed as a myxoid variant, which is internationally proposed as a histological subtype of epithelioid mesothelioma with a relatively favorable prognosis.

Objectives: In Japan, benign asbestos pleural effusion (BAPE) has been eligible for industrial accident compensation since 2003 as an asbestos-related disease despite the lack of good criteria. We compiled a criteria into a checklist of essential items and for excluding other diseases inducing pleural effusion as a diagnosis process.
Method: Thoracentesis was performed in order to confirm the presence of pleural effusion at the initial diagnosis, and 105 suspected BAPE patients were retrospectively examined.

Aims/introduction: The objective of the present study was to clarify the association of the type and number of first-degree family history of diabetes (FHD) with the clinical characteristics, especially with residual β-cell function, in type 2 diabetes patients.
Materials And Methods: A total of 1,131 type 2 diabetes patients were recruited and divided into four groups according to FHD information as follows: (i) patients without FHD (FHD-); (ii) those with at least one sibling who had diabetes without parental diabetes (FHD+); (iii) those with one parent (FHD++); or (iv) those with both parents (FHD+++) who had diabetes with or without a sibling with diabetes.
Results: The percentages of the FHD-, FHD+, FHD++ and FHD+++ groups were 49.

Background: Differential rod contouring (DRC) is useful for periapical vertebral derotation and decreasing rib hump in patients with thoracic adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). However, it is unknown whether DRC in the thoracolumbar/lumbar spine also contributes to derotation. We assessed the contributions of rod contouring and of DRC to the reduction of apical axial vertebral body rotation in patients with AIS with thoracolumbar/lumbar curvatures.

Aims: The study aimed to evaluate the effects of tolvaptan treatment on survival of patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis with refractory ascites.
Methods: This multicenter, retrospective, observational study included patients with cirrhosis who were treated with tolvaptan for hepatic ascites refractory to conventional diuretics. Patients who could and could not decrease accompanying diuretics within 1 month after tolvaptan administration were defined as the "Decreased" and "Not-decreased" groups, respectively.
