Gastric H+,K(+)-ATPase was functionally expressed in the human kidney HEK293 cell line. The expressed enzyme catalyzed ouabain-resistant K(+)-dependent ATP hydrolysis. The K(+)-ATPase activity was inhibited by SCH 28090, a specific inhibitor of gastric proton pump, in a dose-dependent manner.

Acta Anaesthesiol Scand

August 1995

Department of Anesthesiology, Faculty of Medicine, Toyama Medical University, Sugitani, Japan.

Sex differences, and the influence of drug dosage and additional upper airway obstruction were studied in midazolam-induced breathing patterns and sedation in 30 healthy volunteers (8 males and 22 females). After administration of 0.1 mg.

Although the depressive effect of sevoflurane on ventilation has been reported, its potency and mode of action on the neural respiratory activity is still unclear. Therefore, the effects of sevoflurane on the phrenic nerve discharge and the respiratory timing were compared with those of halothane. The efferent activity of the phrenic nerve was recorded from decerebrate, un-anesthetized and artificially ventilated cats, and its power spectrum was calculated.

Oophorectomy predisposes to degenerative spondylolisthesis.

J Bone Joint Surg Br

January 1995

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Toyama Medical University, Japan.

We performed a case-control study on the influence of oophorectomy on the development of degenerative spondylolisthesis, including a clinical review and determination of serum oestradiol levels. We also compared the radiological appearance of the lumbar spine at L4/5 in patients with and without spondylolisthesis and with and without oophorectomy. Oophorectomy was a risk factor for degenerative spondylolisthesis with an odds ratio of 7.

Itai-itai disease is a condition caused by long-term exposure of the inhabitants of Toyama prefecture, Japan, to cadmium intoxication. The characteristic clinical features of this disease include renal tubular dysfunction, osteomalacia, and anemia. In order to clarify the pathogenesis of the anemia, the red blood cell count, hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit, serum iron level, total iron-binding capacity, serum ferritin level, serum erythropoietin level, creatinine clearance, fractional excretion of beta 2-microglobulin, and bone marrow morphology were determined in ten patients with Itai-itai disease.

Bioassay-guided fractionation of Gardeniae Fructus extract (GFE), which stimulates the proliferation of cultured endothelial cells, led to the isolation of glycerol and D-mannitol. Both compounds significantly increased the incorporation of [3H]thymidine and [14C]leucine into the acid-insoluble fraction of bovine aortic endothelial cell layers in culture. This clearly indicated that glycerol and D-mannitol are active components of GFE on endothelial cell proliferation.

Procyanidin B-5 (1), epicatechin-(4 beta----8)-epicatechin-(4 beta----6)-epicatechin (2), and epicatechin-(4 beta----6)-epicatechin-(4 beta----8)-epicatechin-(4 beta----6)-epicatechin (3), which showed an inhibitory effect toward protein kinase C, were isolated from the rhizomes of Davallia mariesii Moore. Detailed analyses of their 1H- and 13C-nuclear magnetic resonance spectra were carried out by the use of two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance techniques.

Analysis of a thread used in the Kshara Sutra treatment in the Ayurvedic medicinal system.

J Ethnopharmacol

May 1990

Research Institute for Wakan-Yaku (Traditional Sino-Japanese Medicines), Toyama Medical University, Japan.

From a Kshara Sutra thread which is used in the therapy of fistula in the Ayurvedic medicinal system, euphol, 3,12-di-O-acetyl-8-O-benzoylingol, 3,12-di-O-acetyl-8-O-tigloylingol, curcumin, p-coumaroylferuloylmethane and di-p-courmaroylmethane were isolated and characterized. In addition, GLC and GC/MS confirmed the presence of euphol, antiquol B, cycloeucalenol and 24-methylene cycloartanol in the thread.
