Docosahexaenoate is a cytoprotective ω-3 polyunsaturated lipid that is abundant in the retina and is essential for its function. Due to its six unsaturated double bonds, docosahexaenoate is highly susceptible to oxidation and the formation of products with photosensitizing properties. This study aimed to test on cultured human retinal pigment epithelial cells ARPE-19 the (photo)cytotoxic potential of partly oxidized docosahexaenoate and its effect on the formation of lipofuscin from phagocytosed photoreceptor outer segments (POSs).

Hydrogels have a unique three-dimensional network that can create a good environment for the loading of functional compounds; hence, they have considerable potential in the delivery of bioactive substances. Natural macromolecular substances (proteins, polysaccharides) have the features of low toxicity, degradability, and biosafety; thus, they can be employed in the manufacture of hydrogels in the food sector. With its customizable viscoelastic and porous structure, hydrogels are believed to be good bioactive material delivery vehicles, which can effectively load polyphenols, vitamins, probiotics, and other active substances to prevent their influence from the external environment, thereby improving its stability.

Despite all prevention programs, many cases of colorectal cancer (CRC) are diagnosed when they have already metastasized. Herein, chemotherapy is required, and combination of 5-fluorouracil, irinotecan, and leucovorin (FOLFIRI) is one of the first-line treatments chosen. However, it is so toxic that compromises patient outcomes.

3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol esters (3-MCPDE) are a group of contaminants which are mainly formed during heat processing of edible oil and fat-based foods. The kidney is the primary target organ for the toxic effects of 3-MCPDE. 3-MCPD-di-palmitate exists in a variety of oils and fats, and is the most common and relatively high proportion of 3-MCPDE.

Metallothionein (MT) plays a significant role in heavy metal removal, antioxidant defense, and immune regulation. The current predominant approach for obtaining natural MT is extraction from tissue, which often entails complex procedures resulting in limited yields. In recent years, researchers have adopted the strategy of fusing labels such as GST or His for the heterologous expression of MT.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of age-related dementia. In AD, the death of neurons in the central nervous system is associated with the accumulation of toxic amyloid β peptide (Aβ) and mitochondrial dysfunction. Mitochondria are signal transducers of metabolic and biochemical information, and their impairment can compromise cellular function.

Graphene oxide (GO) and GO-based nanocomposites are promising in drug delivery and photothermal therapy due to their exceptional near-infrared optical absorption and high specific surface area. In this study, we have effectively conjugated an oxaliplatin (IV) prodrug, PEGylated graphene oxide, and PEGylated biotin (PB) in a single platform for breast cancer treatment. This platform demonstrates promising prospects for targeted drug delivery and the synergistic application of photothermal-chemotherapy when exposed to NIR-laser irradiation.

Ergosterol peroxide (EP) is a steroidal compound isolated from the traditional Chinese medicine Ganoderma lucidum. However, EP is limited by its solubility and moderate potency in antitumor studies. In the present study, a series of novel ergosterol peroxide-3-thiazolidinedione derivatives were designed and synthesized, by changing the linker between ergosterol peroxide and thiazolidinedione, it is expected to obtain compounds with better antitumor activity.

Current treatment of Candida infections is threatened by antifungal drug resistance. Thus, medicinal plants have been studied to identify new and highly effective antifungal substances with low toxicity. Here, we showed that the tannin-rich n-butanol fraction of Terminalia catappa (FBuOH) possesses antifungal and antibiofilm properties and protects Tenebrio molitor larvae against Candida albicans infection.

Background: Increasing consumer reliance on prenatal multivitamins and minerals (PMVMs) underscores the importance of ensuring their quality and safety. Adequate choline and iodine intakes during pregnancy are crucial for fetal development, yet discrepancies between labeled and actual content in PMVM products pose significant health risks. Additionally, the potential presence of toxic heavy metals, such as arsenic, lead, and cadmium, raises concerns about potential adverse health effects.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a widespread environmental endocrine disruptor (EED) that can cause various environmental and health issues by inducing oxidative stress. The c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) signaling pathway plays a crucial role in oxidative stress-mediated cellular damage. Although folic acid (FA) has demonstrated antioxidant properties, its potential protective effects against BPA-induced developmental and neurotoxicity, as well as the mechanisms involved in the JNK signaling pathway, are still not completely understood.

Lead (Pb) and hexavalent chromium (Cr) are highly toxic pollutants with no safe exposure levels, posing significant health risks globally, especially in developing countries. Current detection methods for these metals are often complex and inaccessible, highlighting the urgent need for innovative approaches. In this study, we present a rapid, cost-effective colorimetric assay utilizing ascorbic acid-capped gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) for the selective detection of Pb and Cr ions at levels recommended by regulatory bodies such as the WHO and EPA.

The study focuses on the development of folate-targeted conjugates utilizing Angelica gigas polysaccharide (F2) as a drug carrier for colorectal cancer therapy. We synthesized F2-C-5-FU conjugates by linking carboxymethyl-5-fluorouracil (C-5-FU) with folic acid (FA) through ester bonding. The drug release behavior of F2-C-5-FU-FA was pH-dependent, favoring release under alkaline conditions.
