Many freshwater systems are continuously exposed to waste streams like municipal wastewater and agricultural runoff, leading to exposure to chemicals that can cause mortality and behavioural changes in aquatic organisms. While research has advanced our understanding of pesticide effects on behaviour of aquatic organisms, the impacts of pharmaceuticals are less understood. Psychopharmaceuticals are particularly interesting because they can act on nervous systems, potentially affecting the behaviour of aquatic organisms.

Objectives: Although considerable focus has been placed on understanding the causes of opioid drug overdoses, the intentions for such overdoses are not well characterized. We investigated the motivations behind nonfatal opioid exposures resulting in serious adverse health outcomes.
Methods: We analyzed prospectively collected data on nonfatal opioid overdoses in the multicenter Toxicology Investigators Consortium (ToxIC) Core Registry between 2014 and 2021.

Background: Adverse cutaneous drug reactions have been reported with most drugs, including antidepressants (ADs) and second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs). The lack of extensive research on the relationship between ADs and SGAs, and cutaneous toxicity remains troubling. Our study aimed to assess the cutaneous toxicity of ADs and SGAs and provide valuable insights for clinical applications and scientific investigations.

Aim: Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) have been extensively utilized for the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders. Clinical trials and real-world data suggest that SNRIs may cause reproductive toxicity. To comprehensively assess this association, we conducted a pharmacovigilance study.

The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the co-occurrence of quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) and antidepressants in aquatic environments. Microalgae are sustainable and cost-effective candidates for removing emerging pollutants. QACs have a robust ability to adsorb on cell surface and alter membrane permeability, but little is known about the influence of QACs on microalgal bioremediation of co-existing pollutants like antidepressants.

Limitations of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) are responsible for the low efficacy and high toxicity of many antidepressants. However, strategies to enhance BBB targeting to improve the efficacy and safety of antidepressants remain challenging. In this study, we prepared transferrin (Tf)-functionalized chitosan (CS)-N,O-carboxymethy chitosan (NOCMS) nanosystems (NPs) (NOCMS-CS-Tf NPs), which can enhance BBB targeting in the depressive environment and allow more NPs to enter the brain.

Depression in pregnant women raises concerns about the safety of antidepressants use, particularly its impact on offspring's neurocognition. This study investigates the effects of maternal exposure to vortioxetine (VOX) on the neurocognitive development of rat offspring. Pregnant Wistar rats were administered clinically pertinent doses of VOX, 1 mg/kg/day or 2 mg/kg/day from gestational day 6-21.

Lithium salts have strong medical properties in neurological disorders such as bipolar disorder and lithium-responsive headaches. They have recently gathered attention due to their potential preventive effect in viral infections. Though the therapeutic effect of lithium was documented by Cade in the late 1940s, its underlying mechanism of action is still disputed.

Bupropion is a norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor that is commonly used as an antidepressant and for smoking cessation. Bupropion overdose can lead to serious side effects which include seizures, status epilepticus, and fatal arrhythmias. Managing bupropion toxicity is challenging as there is no effective antidote and treatment is largely supportive.

The high prevalence of major depressive disorder (MDD) among women of childbearing age necessitates careful consideration of antidepressant use during pregnancy. Although newer antidepressants, such as Vilazodone (VLZ), are preferred for their enhanced therapeutic profiles; however, their safety during pregnancy and long-term effects on offspring brains remain inadequately addressed. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the reproductive and developmental neurotoxicity of VLZ given at equivalent therapeutic doses during gestation in a rat model.
