Introduction And Importance: The body packer swallows or embeds drugs in body cavities in a purposeful way. Packets usually contain of opium, cocaine, cannabis and amphetamines. The significant complications of body packing usually are symptoms of drug toxicity due to leaking or ruptured packets or symptoms of ingesting relatively large foreign bodies.

The present study aimed to investigate the neuroprotective activity of the black peel pomegranate extract, and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) biosynthesized using the extract. We pretreated the human neuroblastoma SH-SY5 cells with the extract and AgNPs and evaluated the neuroprotective activity of these agents against methamphetamine (Meth) cytotoxicity. The NPs were spherical with 19 ± 8 nm size, - 28 mV surface charge, and 0.

Curcumin is a well-known antioxidant used as traditional medicine in China and India since ages to treat variety of inflammatory ailments as a food supplement. Curcumin has antitumor properties with neuroprotective effects in Alzheimer's disease. Curcumin elevates brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and dopamine (DA) levels in the brain indicating its role in substance abuse.

Aim: Drug abuse and addiction are major public health concerns, with millions of people worldwide affected by the negative consequences of drug use. To better understand this complex issue, a review was conducted to examine the mechanisms of action and effects of drugs of abuse, including their acute and chronic effects, the symptoms of abstinence syndrome, as well as their cardiovascular impacts.
Methods: The analyzed data were obtained after surveying an electronic database, namely PubMed, with no time limit, grey literature sources, and reference lists of relevant articles.

We measured the cardiac contractile effects of the sympathomimetic amphetamine-like drug methamphetamine alone and in the presence of cocaine or propranolol in human atrial preparations. For a more comprehensive analysis, we also examined the effects of methamphetamine in preparations from the left and right atria of mice and, for comparison, analyzed the cardiac effects of amphetamine itself. In human atrial preparations, methamphetamine and amphetamine increased the contractile force, the relaxation rate, and the rate of tension development, and shortened the time to maximum tension and the time to relaxation.

Background: Previous research has shown that cocaine-associated deaths occur more frequently in hot weather, which has not been described for other illicit drugs or combinations of drugs. The study objective was to evaluate the relation between temperature and risk of death related to cocaine, opioids and amphetamines in British Columbia, Canada.
Methods: We extracted data on all deaths with cocaine, opioid or amphetamine toxicity recorded as an underlying or contributing cause from BC vital statistics for 1998-2017.

Interpreting fatalities involving khat is challenging due to a lack of data on cathinone and cathine reference concentrations in postmortem tissues. This study investigated the autopsy findings and toxicological results of fatalities involving khat in Saudi Arabia's Jazan region from 1 January 2018 to 31 December 2021. All confirmed cathine and cathinone results in postmortem blood, urine, brain, liver, kidney, and stomach samples were recorded and analyzed.

Lithium carbonate (LiCO) is a mainstay therapeutic for the prevention of mood-episode recurrences in bipolar disorder (BD). Unfortunately, its narrow therapeutic index is associated with complications that may lead to treatment non-compliance. Intriguingly, lithium orotate (LiOr) is suggested to possess unique uptake characteristics that would allow for reduced dosing and mitigation of toxicity concerns.

Although the anticonvulsant effects of ginsenosides are recognized, little is known about their effects on the convulsive behaviors induced by the activation of L-type Ca channels. Here, we investigated whether ginsenoside Re (GRe) modulates excitotoxicity induced by the L-type Ca channel activator Bay k-8644. GRe significantly attenuated Bay k-8644-induced convulsive behaviors and hippocampal oxidative stress in mice.

The risk of serotonin syndrome (SS), especially when linezolid is used concomitantly with methadone, buprenorphine, and/or dextroamphetamine, remains widely unstudied and may limit the options for antimicrobial therapy in these patient populations. We reviewed all adult encounters on linezolid with concomitant methadone, buprenorphine, and/or dextroamphetamine from April 2016 to June 2022. The primary outcomes included characterizing prescribing preferences and prevalence of confirmed and possible serotonin syndrome using ICD-10 diagnosis codes, cyproheptadine administration, and electronic medical record chart review using the Hunter Serotonin Toxicity Criteria.

Background: Methamphetamine is widely abused in all parts of the world. It has been reported that short-term and long-term methamphetamine exposure could damage the dopaminergic system and induce cardiomyopathy and cardiotoxicity via mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress. Vanillic acid (VA), a phenolic acid compound derived from plants, is known for its antioxidant and mitochondrial protection properties.

Background: Impairment of specific cognitive domains in schizophrenia has been associated with prefrontal cortex (PFC) catecholaminergic deficits. Among other factors, prenatal exposure to infections represents an environmental risk factor for schizophrenia development in adulthood. However, it remains largely unknown whether the prenatal infection-induced changes in the brain may be associated with concrete switches in a particular neurochemical circuit, and therefore, if they could alter behavioral functions.
