The discrepancy between radiographically-assessed and self-recognized hallux valgus in a large population-based cohort.

BMC Musculoskelet Disord

January 2022

Department of Preventive Medicine for Locomotive Organ Disorders, 22nd Century Medical & Research Center, Faculty of Medicine, University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan.

Background: There has been a paucity of literature revealing the discrepancy between self-recognition about hallux valgus (HV) and radiographically-evaluated foot configuration. Knowing this discrepancy will help to make a comparative review of the findings of previous literatures about epidemiological studies about the prevalence of HV.

Questions/purposes: (1) Is there a discrepancy between radiographically-assessed and self-recognized HV in the general population? (2) What factors affect the self-recognition of HV in the general population?

Methods: The fifth survey of the Research on Osteoarthritis/Osteoporosis against Disability study involved 1996 participants who had undergone anterior-posterior radiography of bilateral feet and answered a simple dichotomous questionnaire on self-recognition of HV.

Micropetrosis develops as a result of stagnation of calcium, phosphorus and bone fluid, which appears as highly mineralized bone area in the osteocytic perilacunar/canalicular system regardless of bone turnover of the patients. And microcracks are predisposed to increase in these areas, which leads to increased bone fragility. However, micropetrosis of hemodialysis (HD) patients has not been discussed at all.

Background: In order to improve cancer care in Japan further, it is now required for orthopaedic surgeons to get actively involved in managing locomotive organs such as bones, muscles and nerves in cancer patients. In 2018, the Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) conducted a questionnaire survey to investigate the current status of cancer treatment at the orthopaedic training facilities certified by the JOA. We analyzed the results of that questionnaire survey, focusing on the data from the core hospitals for cancer care (designated cancer hospitals), to clarify the involvement of orthopaedic surgeons in cancer treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated how dietary habits impact the prevalence of sarcopenia (muscle loss) in Japanese individuals aged 60 and older, using a cross-sectional analysis of 1,345 participants.
  • It found that only 5.7% of participants had sarcopenia, with slightly higher rates in women compared to men.
  • The data revealed that higher intake of vitamin E and certain fats was linked to a lower risk of developing sarcopenia, suggesting that diet may play a critical role in maintaining muscle health in older adults.

Although there is evidence on the predictors of adverse health outcomes in older individuals, walking speed has typically been measured in laboratory settings (LWS); LWS may be distinct from individuals' actual walking speed in their daily lives (DWS). We examined whether DWS differs from LWS among older adults, and its association with physical frailty. Participants were 90 community-dwelling older adults.

Introduction: Facet effusion represents a magnetic resonance imaging finding suggesting accumulation of fluid in the facet joint, potentially predictive of lumbar spondylolisthesis and low back pain. However, its prevalence and epidemiological characteristics in the general population remain unclear, because previous studies only included patients or volunteers. The aim of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of facet effusion in the general population and to describe its potential relationship with spondylolisthesis and low back pain.

Hypomineralized matrix is a factor determining bone mineral density. Increased perilacunar hypomineralized bone area is caused by reduced mineralization by osteocytes. The importance of vitamin D in the mineralization by osteocytes was investigated in hemodialysis patients who underwent total parathyroidectomy (PTX) with immediate autotransplantation of diffuse hyperplastic parathyroid tissue.

Precision surgery for primary liver cancer.

Cancer Biol Med

August 2019

President Emeritus, Towa Hospital, Adachi-ku 120-0003, Japan.

Liver resection remains the best curative option for primary liver cancer, such as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma. In particular, in liver resection for HCC, anatomical resection of the tumor-bearing segments is highly recommended to eradicate the intrahepatic metastases spreading through portal venous branches. Anatomical liver resection, including anatomical segmentectomy and subsegmentectomy using the dye-injection method, is technically demanding and requires experience for completion of a precise procedure.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed the prevalence of locomotive syndrome, sarcopenia, and frailty in individuals aged 60 and above within a population-based cohort of 963 participants.
  • The findings revealed high prevalence rates of locomotive syndrome (81% for stage 1 and 34.1% for stage 2), but lower rates for sarcopenia (8.7%) and frailty (4.5%), with most cases of sarcopenia and frailty co-existing with locomotive syndrome.
  • The study suggests that addressing locomotive syndrome could potentially mitigate the risks of frailty and sarcopenia, ultimately helping to prevent disability in older adults.
