Intensive genetic selection of broiler breeders and layer hens resulted in differences in the mechanisms of growth and also in cell metabolism during embryogenesis. Previous research has shown that an adipokine named chemerin and one of these receptors, CMKLR1 were potentially involved in broiler embryo development. Here, our objectives were 1) to compare the expression of chemerin and its receptors CMKLR1, GPR1, and CCRL2 and chemerin concentration in extra-embryonic annexes (allantoic and amniotic membranes and fluids and plasma) in broiler and layer fertile eggs during the development (embryonic day (ED) 7, 14, and 18) by RT-qPCR and specific chicken ELISA and 2) to investigate the role of chemerin and one of its receptors GPR1 in embryo development after in ovo injections of neutralizing antibodies against chicken chemerin and GPR1.

Purpose: Research on structural empowerment has typically adopted a variable-centered perspective, which is not ideal to study the combined effects of structural empowerment components. This person-centered investigation aims to enhance our knowledge about the configurations, or profiles, of healthcare employees' perceptions of the structural empowerment dimensions present in their workplace (opportunity, information, support, and resources). Furthermore, this study considers the replicability and stability of these profiles over a period of 2 years, and their outcomes (perceived quality of care, and positive and negative affect).

The proteolytic airway environment associated with pneumonia acts as a barrier for treatment with anti-infective antibodies.

Eur J Pharm Biopharm

INSERM, Respiratory Disease Research Centre, U1100, F-37032 Tours, France; University of Tours, F-37032 Tours, France. Electronic address:

Like pneumonia, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is characterized by a massive infiltration of innate immune cells (such as polymorphonuclear leukocytes) into the airways and alveolar spaces. These cells release proteases that may degrade therapeutic antibodies and thus limit their effectiveness. Here, we investigated the in vitro and ex vivo impact on anti-severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2) IgG1s and other IgG subclasses (IgG2 and IgG4) of the neutrophil elastase, proteinase 3 and cathepsin G (the three main neutrophil serine proteases) found in endotracheal aspirates from patients with severe COVID-19.

Given the risk of rejection, the presence of preformed donor specific antibodies (DSA) contraindicates transplantation in most allocation systems. However, HLA-Cw and -DP DSA escape this censorship. We performed a multicentric observational study, in which the objective was to determinate risk factors of acute antibody-mediated rejection (aABMR) in recipients transplanted with preformed isolated Cw- or DP-DSA.

  • In cardiogenic shock, short-term mechanical assist devices like Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenators help stabilize patients before considering long-term solutions.
  • For long-term support in cases of persistent biventricular dysfunction, options are limited to devices like the Syncardia Total Artificial Heart and the Berlin Heart EXCOR, which is not approved for adults in the U.S.
  • While strategies such as using two Left Ventricular Assist Devices are common, they remain off-label, and overall survival rates are around 70%, indicating significant complications and reduced quality of life for patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Intensive use of pesticides leads to environmental contamination and significant health risks due to exposure to chemical residues, particularly affecting the liver, which is crucial for metabolizing these substances.
  • A study on a mixture of seven common pesticides revealed strong cytotoxic effects on liver cells, primarily caused by manganese-containing dithiocarbamates (maneb and mancozeb), even at low concentrations.
  • The mechanism of toxicity involves oxidative stress and intrinsic apoptosis triggered by altered manganese and zinc levels due to the metabolization of these pesticides, with potential protective effects from zinc supplementation.

It has been suggested that the outcomes of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are better in individuals having recently received an influenza vaccine than in non-vaccinated individuals. We hypothesized that this association depends on the humoral responses against influenza viruses. We aim to assess the relationship between the humoral immunity against influenza and the 3-month all-cause mortality among hospitalized older patients with COVID-19.

In the early stages of infection, human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) dissemination within its host is believed to rely mostly on cell-to-cell contacts. Past studies unveiled a novel mechanism of HTLV-1 intercellular transmission based on the remodeling of the host-cell extracellular matrix and the generation of cell-surface viral assemblies whose structure, composition, and function resemble bacterial biofilms. These polarized aggregates of infectious virions, identified as viral biofilms, allow the bulk delivery of viruses to target cells and may help to protect virions from immune attacks.
