Quantifying Morphology of a Differentiating Neuroblastoma Cell Line.

SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells are a subclone cell line of SK-N-SH cells derived from neural crest that were originally taken from human bone marrow during a biopsy. Research has shown that these cells can be cultured in vitro to differentiate into mature, neuronal phenotypes such as dopaminergic neurons. Here, we added to these discoveries by establishing a quantitative profile for the SH-SY5Y cells of morphometric features including neurite length, branchpoint numbers, and soma area over the span of 18 days.

Background: Fresh osteochondral allograft (OCA) transplantation is a viable treatment option for osteochondral defects of the talus. However, sufficient data are not available on patients' participation in sports or recreational activities after the procedure.

Purpose: To assess whether patients undergoing OCA transplantation of the talus participated in sports or recreational activities postoperatively.

Guideline-based management of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease in the primary care setting.

Background: The prevalence of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is increasing worldwide. Primary care providers play a critical role in the screening, diagnosis, and management of MASLD and/or metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), though they can face challenges in this setting, particularly where healthcare resources are limited and barriers to care exist. To address these challenges, several guidelines have been developed to provide evidence-based recommendations for the clinical assessment and management of patients with MASLD/MASH.

Accelerated Education Intervention: A Pilot Study to Assess the Effectiveness of a Brief, Self-Paced Intervention to Prevent Burnout in Physician Assistant Students.

Purpose: Physician assistant (PA) programs have an academically rigorous curriculum, which places a myriad of pressures on students and contributes to burnout. The benefits of optimal quality and quantity of sleep are well documented, yet students still view sacrificing sleep as a necessary step in academic success. The purpose of this pilot study was to create behavior changes to promote optimal sleep hygiene in PA school and decrease measurements of burnout.

Myocardial Infarction Simulated From Improper Telemetry (MISFIT): An Autobiographical Case Report.

An electrocardiogram, used to not only assess the rate and rhythm of the heart but also to evaluate for injury to the heart, is performed by attaching 12 leads to the patient's body. A myocardial infarction can be mimicked by the misplacement of the leads. A 58-year-old man with long-distance running-associated bradycardia developed postoperative atrial fibrillation with a rapid ventricular response.

The impact of measurement technique and sampling on estimates of skeletal muscle fibre architecture.

Skeletal muscle fibre architecture provides important insights into performance of vertebrate locomotor and feeding behaviours. Chemical digestion and in situ sectioning of muscle bellies along their lengths to expose fibres, fibre orientation and intramuscular tendon, are two classical methods for estimating architectural variables such as fibre length (L) and physiological cross-sectional area (PCSA). It has recently been proposed that L estimates are systematically shorter and hence less accurate using in situ sectioning.

PillHarmonics: An Orchestrated Pharmacogenetics Medication Clinical Decision Support Service.

Objectives:  Pharmacogenetics (PGx) is increasingly important in individualizing therapeutic management plans, but is often implemented apart from other types of medication clinical decision support (CDS). The lack of integration of PGx into existing CDS may result in incomplete interaction information, which may pose patient safety concerns. We sought to develop a cloud-based orchestrated medication CDS service that integrates PGx with a broad set of drug screening alerts and evaluate it through a clinician utility study.

Making Sense of the Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Clinical Practice Guidelines: What Clinicians Need to Know.

Standards of care summarized in clinical practice guidelines for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) offer clinicians a streamlined diagnostic and management approach based on the best available evidence. These recommendations have changed a great deal in recent years; today, there is a clear focus on screening for the early identification and risk stratification of patients at high risk of steatohepatitis and clinically significant fibrosis to promote timely referrals to specialty care when needed. This article reviews and provides the rationale for current guidelines for NAFLD screening, diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring and addresses barriers to providing evidence-based NAFLD care and how to overcome them.

Data-driven hypothesis generation among inexperienced clinical researchers: A comparison of secondary data analyses with visualization (VIADS) and other tools.

Objectives: To compare how clinical researchers generate data-driven hypotheses with a visual interactive analytic tool (VIADS, a visual interactive analysis tool for filtering and summarizing large datasets coded with hierarchical terminologies) or other tools.

Methods: We recruited clinical researchers and separated them into "experienced" and "inexperienced" groups. Participants were randomly assigned to a VIADS or control group within the groups.

A disrupted compartment boundary underlies abnormal cardiac patterning and congenital heart defects.

Failure of septation of the interventricular septum (IVS) is the most common congenital heart defect (CHD), but mechanisms for patterning the IVS are largely unknown. We show that a progenitor lineage forms a compartment boundary bisecting the IVS. This coordinated population originates at a first- and second heart field interface, subsequently forming a morphogenetic nexus.

Top faculty talent recruitment, mentoring, productivity, and retention are paramount for organizational success among institutions of higher learning. Programs would do well to treat these various aspects of faculty management/development as inextricably linked to one another, rather than viewing recruitment or retention in a vacuum. The Strategic Academic Recruitment (StAR) program at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) University of Medicine and Health Sciences in Dublin was founded to bear these things, along with best practices in faculty development, in mind to enhance organizational effectiveness.

Evolution of the throwing shoulder: why apes don't throw well and how that applies to throwing athletes.

Background: Humans have unique characteristics making us the only primate that can throw well while most other primates throw predominately underhand with poor speed and accuracy. The purpose of this study is to illuminate the uniquely human characteristics that allow us to throw so well. When treating an injury such as a labral tear or capsule tear, this study hopes the reader can gain a better understanding of the issues that lead to the tear and those that may determine the success of treatment besides the actual repair.

Injected Drug Addiction-Associated Swollen Hands: A Case Report of Methylamphetamine-Related Unilateral Drug Addiction-Related Puffy Hand Syndrome.

Puffy hand syndrome occurs in addicts who have injected drugs either intravenously, intradermally, or subcutaneously. It usually presents as bilateral reversible pitting edema of the hands; less frequently, it occurs unilaterally. The forearms and arms may also be affected.

Painting the Way Forward: An Ecological Cultural Visual Analysis of Anti-VAW Public Art in Rural Ecuador.

Despite efforts within Ecuador to combat violence against women (VAW), the country still claims some of the highest rates of violence in the Americas. In this study, we complete a cultural visual analysis of anti-VAW public art in a small Ecuadorian city. Visual data is examined and interpreted by way of the social-ecological model (SEM).

The chylomicron saga: time to focus on postprandial metabolism.

Since statins have had such tremendous therapeutic success over the last three decades, the field of atherosclerosis has become somewhat LDL-centric, dismissing the relevance of triglycerides (TG), particularly chylomicrons, in atherogenesis. Nonetheless, 50% of patients who take statins are at risk of developing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and are unable to achieve their goal LDL-C levels. This residual risk is mediated, in part by triglyceride rich lipoproteins (TRL) and their remnants.

Program ACTIVE II: 6- and 12-month outcomes of a treatment approach for major depressive disorder in adults with type 2 diabetes.

Aims: To evaluate the long-term effects of behavioral treatments on glycemic and psychological outcomes for patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and type 2 diabetes (T2D).

Methods: Program ACTIVE II was a multicenter randomized controlled comparative effectiveness trial of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), exercise (EXER), combination treatment (CBT + EXER) and usual care (UC) for adults with MDD and T2D.

Results: Primary outcomes: change in A1c and depressive symptoms at 6- (N = 87) and 12-months (N = 75) from baseline.
