Article Synopsis
  • A nationwide study in France assessed the effectiveness of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) for treating Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) across 17 centers from 2018 to 2022.
  • The study found an overall FMT success rate of 84.3% with very few severe adverse events, and it identified factors linked to CDI recurrence such as severe chronic kidney disease and inadequate bowel cleansing.
  • Key factors for improving FMT success included proper manufacturing of the transplant, thorough bowel prep, and individualized delivery methods based on patient needs.

Background: The microbiota is emerging as a key factor in the predisposition to insulin resistance and obesity.

Objective: To understand the interplay among gut microbiota and insulin sensitivity in multiple tissues.

Design: Integrative multiomics and multitissue approach across six studies, combining euglycaemic clamp measurements (used in four of the six studies) with other measurements of glucose metabolism and insulin resistance (glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) and fasting glucose).

Background: It is unclear whether hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) patients can tolerate antithrombotic therapies (AT) including antiplatelet (AP) and/or anticoagulant (AC) agents.

Objectives: Primary endpoint was tolerance to AT in HHT. Secondary endpoints were to identify factors associated with major bleeding events (MBE) and premature discontinuation of AT.

Background: Direct-acting antiviral (DAA) agents for the treatment of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection have been proven safe and effective in cirrhotic patients awaiting liver transplantation (LT). However, in the long term, data remain minimal regarding the clinical impact of viral eradication on patients listed for decompensated cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We aimed to elucidate the clinical outcomes of patients regarding delisting and the evolution of HCC during the long-term follow-up.

Gibberellin-regulated proteins: Emergent allergens.

Front Allergy

September 2022

"Allergy / Environment" Research Team, Armand Trousseau Children Hospital, APHP, Paris, France.

About 10 years ago, a protein family was shown for the first time to contain allergenic members, gibberellin-regulated protein (GRP). The first reported member was from peach, Pru p 7. One can hypothesize that it was not detected before because its physicochemical characteristics overlap with those of lipid transfer protein (LTP), a well-known allergen, or because the exposure to GRP increased due to an increase in the gibberellin phythormone level in plant food, either exogenous or endogenous.

Intravenous Immunoglobulins Tapering and Withdrawal in Systemic Capillary Leak Syndrome (Clarkson Disease).

Background: The systemic capillary leak syndrome (SCLS), also known as Clarkson disease, is a very rare condition characterized by recurrent life-threatening episodes of vascular hyperpermeability in the presence of a monoclonal gammopathy. Extended intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) treatment is associated with fewer recurrences and improved survival, but the optimal treatment dosage and duration remain unknown.

Objective: We aim to evaluate the safety of IVIG tapering and withdrawal in patients with SCLS.

Background & Aims: Prediction of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) occurrence in patients with chronic hepatitis C (HCV) who achieved a sustained virological response (SVR) after direct acting antivirals (DAAs) remains challenging.

Methods: Among HCC-free HCV patients with advanced fibrosis enrolled in the ANRS CO22 HEPATHER cohort who achieved SVR 12 weeks after treatment with DAAs, HCC predictive models were developed using Cox multivariable regression. The derived score was externally validated in a large Egyptian cohort.

Fecal Microbiota Transplantation for Refractory Clostridioides Difficile Infection Is Effective and Well Tolerated Even in Very Old Subjects: A Real-Life Study.

J Nutr Health Aging

May 2022

Laurent Alric, Internal medicine department of digestive disease, Rangueil hospital, Toulouse 3 university, 1 avenue du professeur Jean-poulhès, TSA 50032, 31000 Toulouse, France,

Objectives: Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is an innovative therapy indicated for the treatment of recurrent Clostridioides difficile infections. Although CDI and its complications are more common in very old patients (≥80 years) due to their comorbidities, frailty and senescence of the immune system, limited data are available for this older patient population.

Design: This was a single-center, real-life cohort study with retrospective outcome data registration, conducted at Toulouse, France.

Background: In HCV-infected patients with advanced liver disease, the direct antiviral agents-associated clinical benefits remain debated. We compared the clinical outcome of patients with a previous history of decompensated cirrhosis following treatment or not with direct antiviral agents from the French ANRS CO22 HEPATHER cohort.

Methods: We identified HCV patients who had experienced an episode of decompensated cirrhosis.

Background: Head and neck paragangliomas are extradural masses rarely associated with subarachnoid haemorrhage.

Case: This case, for the first time, reports a fatal subarachnoid haemorrhage due to the rupture of a high-flow aneurysm located on an intradural artery feeding a jugulotympanic paraganglioma. Interestingly, this aneurysm was not present on an angiogram performed 7 years before, during the pre-surgical embolisation of the tumour.

Background: Faecal microbiota transplantation is an emerging therapeutic option, particularly for the treatment of recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection. Stool banks that organise recruitment and screening of faeces donors are being embedded within the regulatory frameworks described in the European Union Tissue and Cells Directive and the technical guide to the quality and safety of tissue and cells for human application, published by the European Council.

Objective: Several European and international consensus statements concerning faecal microbiota transplantation have been issued.

Background: Spontaneous clearance of acute hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is more common in women than in men, independent of known risk factors.

Methods: To identify sex-specific genetic loci, we studied 4423 HCV-infected individuals (2903 male, 1520 female) of European, African, and Hispanic ancestry. We performed autosomal, and X chromosome sex-stratified and combined association analyses in each ancestry group.

Clearance of acute infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) is associated with the chr19q13.13 region containing the rs368234815 (TT/ΔG) polymorphism. We fine-mapped this region to detect possible causal variants that may contribute to HCV clearance.

Moving towards home-based community-centred integrated care in Parkinson's disease.

Instituto de Medicina Molecular, Facultade de Medicina, University of Lisbon, Lisbon, Portugal; Laboratory of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Facultade de Medicina, Universidade de Lisboa, Lisbon, Portugal; CNS - Campus Neurológico Sénior, Torres Vedras, Portugal. Electronic address:

People living with Parkinson's disease (PwP) experience a wide range of motor and non-motor symptoms associated with increasing complexity of care delivery. A multispecialty approach has been presented as an intuitive solution for tailored and comprehensive care delivery. Nevertheless, past trials of both multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary care models in PD suggested no measurable change to a small benefit in quality of life (QoL) and failed to show economic sustainability.
