Electronic address:

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an incurable intestinal disease, with current treatments mainly focused on inflammation control and, in severe cases, surgical resection. Recent studies have highlighted the need for new therapies that promote tissue regeneration. R-spondin-1 (RSPO1) and interleukin-22 (IL-22) have shown anti-inflammatory and regenerative effects in UC models, but have short half-lives and poor targeting abilities.

Background: In Japan, since 2014, new treatments such as androgen receptor signaling inhibitors and cabazitaxel have become applicable for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC), leading to dramatic changes in treatment options.

Objective: This study aims to evaluate the impact of recent advancements in treatment options on the overall survival (OS) of patients diagnosed with de novo metastatic castration-sensitive prostate cancer (mCSPC) in Japan.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 2450 Japanese men diagnosed with de novo mCSPC between 2008 and 2018.

Gravity may exert species-specific effects on quadrupedal vasoreactivity, reflecting variations in the vertical displacement of the cardiocranial axis from the dorsal plane. Deer show markedly displaced cardiocranial axes compared to their closest phylogenetic relatives, but their relative cerebrovascular responses remain unelucidated. Accordingly, we investigated the responses to noradrenaline (NA), acetylcholine (ACh), 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), histamine, angiotensin (Ang) II, and bradykinin (BK) in cervine basilar arterial rings.

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a progressive myocardial disorder characterized by impaired cardiac contraction and ventricular dilation. However, some patients with DCM improve when experiencing left ventricular reverse remodeling (LVRR). Currently, the detailed association between genotypes and clinical outcomes, including LVRR, particularly among children, remains uncertain.

Change and Predictors of Body Composition After Gastrectomy for Gastric Cancer During First Postoperative Year.

J Gastrointest Surg

December 2024

Division of Gastrointestinal and Pediatric Surgery, Department of Surgery, School of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Tottori University, 36-1 Nishi-cho, Yonago 683-8504, Japan.

Purpose: After gastrectomy for gastric cancer, patients often lose significant body weight owing to decreased caloric intake and nutrient absorption. Body weight typically requires approximately 1 year to stabilize. This study aimed to examine the changes and predictors associated with body composition during the first postoperative year.

A new phthalide derivative from the mushroom Cyclocybe cf. erebia culture filtrate affects the phase of circadian rhythms in mouse fibroblasts.

Biosci Biotechnol Biochem

December 2024

Fungus/Mushroom Resource and Research Center, Faculty of Agriculture, Tottori University, Minami 4-101, Koyama, Tottori, Tottori 680-8553, Japan.

Circadian rhythms are biological systems that provide approximately 24-hour cycles for the behavior and physiological functions of organisms. As diverse modern lifestyles often cause disturbances in circadian rhythms, new approaches to their regulation are required. Therefore, new compounds that affect circadian rhythms have been explored in edible mushrooms.

In biological systems, various stimuli and energies are transduced into membrane potentials via ion transport or binding. The application of this concept to artificial devices may result in biomimetic signal transmitters and energy harvesters. In this study, we investigated the mechanical control of fluoride anion recognition with naphthalenediimide (NDI) monolayers at the air-water interface.

Background: Low birth weight (LBW) is an important public health issue that affects development and health over a long period. However, there has been no sufficient decrease in the prevalence of LBW, and it is important to identify preventable factors for LBW which remain to be clarified. The purpose of this study was to clarify the association between Internet use for many hours during pregnancy and LBW.

Epilepsy Behav

December 2024

Division of Child Neurology, Department of Brain and Neurosciences, Faculty of Medicine, Tottori University, Yonago, Japan.

Introduction: Stigma toward epilepsy is widespread not only among the general population but also among healthcare professionals. Therefore, the necessity of providing educational opportunities for epilepsy from an early stage in student education has been emphasized. Recently, problem-based learning (PBL) has gained importance in higher education, with reports indicating that it not only enhances knowledge but also reduces stigma.

Fragmentation Considerations Using Amidoamine Oxide Homologs.

Mass Spectrom (Tokyo)

December 2024

Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Teikyo University, 2-11-1 Kaga, Itabashi-ku, Tokyo 173-8605, Japan.

This study investigates the mass spectrometric analysis of 10 novel amidoamine oxide compounds, which are innovative hydrogelators for polar solvents. This research aims to identify characteristic fragment patterns for these amide compounds using high-resolution mass spectrometry. Methanol solutions of the compounds were analyzed in positive and negative ion modes, and MS1 and MS2 spectra at 6 collision energy levels were obtained via electrospray ionization and hybrid tandem mass spectrometry.

Radiol Case Rep

February 2025

Division of Radiology, Department of Multidisciplinary Internal Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Tottori University, Yonago, Japan.

A 34-year-old woman (gravida 2, para 0) with suspected fetal small-bowel atresia on ultrasound underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 33 weeks 3 days of gestation. In addition to small bowel atresia, a teardrop-shaped hematoma was observed adjacent to the umbilical cord associated with an umbilical cord ulcer (UCU). The fetus was delivered by induced labor on diagnosis of intrauterine fetal death.

Statins are cholesterol-lowering drugs often used for the treatment of dyslipidemia. Statins also exert anti-cancer effects by inhibiting hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA reductase (HMGCR), a rate-limiting enzyme in cholesterol synthesis. We previously reported that the susceptibility to statin treatment differs among cancer cells and that functional E-cadherin expression on the plasma membrane could be a biomarker of statin sensitivity in cancer cells.
