Gastric cancer can be classified into three subgroups according to pattern of tumor infiltration into the surrounding tissue: INFa (expanding growth and a distinct border with the surrounding tissue), INFc (infiltrating growth and an indistinct border with the surrounding tissue), and INFb (in-between a and c). How the tumor infiltration pattern (INF) relates to prognosis and type of recurrence in advanced gastric cancer has not been sufficiently explored. We examined 805 consecutive advanced gastric adenocarcinoma patients who underwent curative gastrectomy at our institution between 1980 and 2005.

We have reported on the clinical usefulness of human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) mRNA quantification in sera in patients with several cancers. Positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET/CT) using ¹⁸F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) has recently become an excellent modality for detecting cancer. We performed a diagnostic comparative study of FDG-PET/CT and hTERT mRNA quantification in patients with cancer.

Background & Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of ablative margin (AM) grading by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with Gd-EOB-DTPA administered prior to radiofrequency ablation (RFA), and to identify factors for achieving a sufficient AM and predictors for local tumor progression.

Methods: A total of 124 hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) were treated by RFA after Gd-EOB-DTPA administration. MRI and enhanced CT were performed within seven hours and one month after RFA.

Background/aim: Tumor progression is one of the most serious issues to overcome cancer disease. As a model of inflammation-induced tumor progression, we used the regressive murine fibrosarcoma cell clone QR-32 and the progressive malignant clone QRsP-11, that was derived from QR-32. Heat shock protein beta-1 (Hspb1) is a molecular chaperone.

Purpose: There is accumulating evidence that inflammation is linked to cancer development and progression. Interleukin-17 (IL-17), an inflammatory cytokine, is produced by CD 8+ T cells (Tc17 cells); however, the specific role of Tc17 cells in tumor immunity against gastric cancer remains unclear.

Methods: The prevalence of Tc17 cells in both peripheral blood mononuclear cells and gastric tissue was evaluated by multicolor flow cytometry and the concentration of IL-17 in sera was quantitated by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Article Synopsis
  • FGFR2 expression is significantly increased in ovarian clear cell carcinoma (CCC), with 96% of tumors showing its presence, affecting patient survival rates.
  • FGFR2 expression correlates with clinical outcomes, where stronger expression is linked to lower 5-year survival rates (54% vs 79%).
  • Treatment with an FGFR inhibitor inhibited CCC cell growth and altered key signaling pathways, suggesting FGFR2 could be a valuable therapeutic target for this type of cancer.

Background: Recent studies have shown that somatic mutations in the AT-rich interactive domain 1A (SWI-like) gene (ARID1A) are the most common genetic changes in clear cell carcinoma of the ovary (CCC). A gene mutation of ARID1A was found in approximately half of CCC cases, and led to absence of the encoded protein and inactivation of the putative tumor suppressor. Here, we investigated whether ARID1A could be a prognostic biomarker for this disease.

When compared with other epithelial ovarian cancers, the clinical characteristics of ovarian clear cell adenocarcinoma (CCC) include 1) a higher incidence among Japanese, 2) an association with endometriosis, 3) poor prognosis in advanced stages, and 4) a higher incidence of thrombosis as a complication. We used high resolution comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) to identify somatic copy number alterations (SCNAs) associated with each of these clinical characteristics of CCC. The Human Genome CGH 244A Oligo Microarray was used to examine 144 samples obtained from 120 Japanese, 15 Korean, and nine German patients with CCC.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) produces vacuolating cytotoxin (VacA), a potent protein toxin, which is associated with gastric inflammation and ulceration. Recent studies demonstrated that connexins (Cxs), which are responsible for intracellular communication at gap junctions (GJs) as well as cell homeostasis, participate in VacA-induced cell death.

Approximately 70% of women with epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) are diagnosed with advanced stage disease, which is associated with high morbidity and mortality. The standard approach to treating patients with advanced EOC remains primary debulking surgery (PDS) followed by chemotherapy. EOC is one of the most sensitive of all solid tumors to cytotoxic drugs, with over 80% of women showing a response to standard chemotherapy combined with taxane and platinum.

Clear cell carcinoma of the ovary (CCC) is a histologic subtype of epithelial ovarian cancer with a distinct clinical behavior. There are marked geographic differences in the prevalence of CCC. The CCC is more likely to be detected at an early stage than high-grade serous cancers, and when confined within the ovary, the prognosis is good.

The peritoneum is the most frequent site of recurrence for gastric cancer after gastrectomy, followed by the liver and lymph nodes. In contrast, metastasis to the thymus is rare. Annual surveillance with computed tomography was performed on a 67-year-old man who previously underwent a distal gastrectomy and D2 lymph node dissection for gastric cancer at Tottori University.

Objective: Fibrogenic cytokines, such as transforming growth factor-beta 1 play a central role in the progression of liver fibrosis. Recently, functional gene polymorphisms in these cytokines have been identified, and some reports have validated the presence of associations between these polymorphisms and disease progression. Connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) is a stimulating factor for fibroblast proliferation and matrix production.

Background: Lower limb lymphedema (LLL) is one of the most frequent postoperative complications of retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy for gynecologic cancer. LLL often impairs quality of life, activities of daily living, sleep, and sex in patients with gynecologic cancer. We conducted this study to evaluate the incidence and risk factors for LLL after gynecologic cancer surgery in patients who received assessment and periodic complex decongestive physiotherapy (CDP).

The efficacy of radiotherapy (RT) for adenocarcinoma (AC) is controversial, although patients with AC of the uterine cervix are treated in a similar manner to those with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). This retrospective study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of adjuvant RT for patients with AC compared to those with SCC following radical hysterectomy. A total of 820 patients with stage IB-IIB cervical cancer, who underwent type III radical hysterectomy between 1997 and 2003, were retrospectively examined; the sample included 280 patients with AC and 540 with SCC.

There is increasing evidence that the effects of administered ATP sensitive potassium (KATP ) channel openers or blockers during ischaemia are still controversial in many organs/tissues. Testicular torsion detorsion which causes ischaemia-reperfusion (IR) injury, cannot be predicted, thus an effective drug should be administered during or after the ischaemia. The aim of this study was to examine whether the administration of KATP channel openers or blockers during ischaemia ameliorates IR injury in the testis.

Aims: Cyclooxygenase (COX) can be activated by nitric oxide-induced (NO-induced) conversion of cysteine thiol group of COX into S-nitrosothiol. We previously reported the involvement of brain COX/NO synthase (NOS) in centrally administered bombesin-, a stress-related neuropeptide, induced secretion of rat adrenal noradrenaline and adrenaline. To examine a possible involvement of the NO-induced modification of COX in bombesin-induced response, we investigated whether bombesin induces close proximity of COX-1 and neuronal NOS (nNOS) or S-nitroso-cysteine in pre-sympathetic spinally projecting neurons in the rat hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN), a regulatory center of adrenomedullary outflow.
