Background: Thoracoscopic esophagectomy has been extensively used worldwide as a curative surgery for patients with esophageal cancer; however, complications such as anastomotic leakage and stenosis remain a major concern. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of circular stapling anastomosis with indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence imaging, which was standardized for cervical esophagogastric anastomosis after thoracoscopic esophagectomy.

Methods: Altogether, 121 patients with esophageal cancer who underwent thoracoscopic esophagectomy with radical lymph node dissection and cervical esophagogastric anastomosis from November 2009 to December 2020 at Tottori University Hospital were enrolled in this study.

Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease is an autosomal dominant disease related to germline mutations in VHL. In VHL disease, pheochromocytoma develops in 10%-20% of patients because of germline mutations and loss of heterozygosity of VHL. However, the rate of paraganglioma associated with VHL is low compared with that of pheochromocytoma, and the reason is unknown.

Primary aldosteronism (PA) is associated with higher cardiovascular morbidity and mortality rates than essential hypertension. The Japan Endocrine Society (JES) has developed an updated guideline for PA, based on the evidence, especially from Japan. We should preferentially screen hypertensive patients with a high prevalence of PA with aldosterone to renin ratio ≥200 and plasma aldosterone concentrations (PAC) ≥60 pg/mL as a cut-off of positive results.

Background: The efficacy of docetaxel and carboplatin with oral estramustine was evaluated in patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer.

Patients And Methods: Patients were treated with intravenous docetaxel at 30 mg/m2 on days 1, 8, 15, and 22 of a 28-day cycle. Intravenous carboplatin (area under the curve, 6 mg/ml/min) was administered on day 1.

Objective: In primary aldosteronism (PA), renal impairment has been identified as an important comorbidity. Excess cortisol production also may lead to renal damage; thus, concomitant mild autonomous cortisol secretion (MACS) may predispose PA patients to renal disorders. However, there is limited evidence to support this claim.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed a cohort of 3707 patients with achalasia-related esophageal motility disorders (AEMDs) to understand the prevalence and characteristics of dilated and sigmoid esophagus, and esophageal diverticulum (ED).
  • Key findings include that longer disease duration, advanced age, obesity, and type I achalasia are linked to the development of sigmoid esophagus, while severe symptoms and integrated relaxation pressure are negatively correlated.
  • The prevalence of ED was low, with correlations indicating that advanced age and non-dilated esophagus were factors in its development, highlighting the need for early diagnosis and treatment of AEMDs to prevent complications.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) are major health issues associated with the metabolic syndrome. Although NASH is a known risk factor of CKD, the mechanisms linking these two diseases remain poorly understood. We aimed to investigate alterations in the kidney complicated with dyslipidemia in an established NASH mouse model.

Activation of PPARγ in bladder cancer via introduction of the long arm of human chromosome 9.

Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, Division of Genome and Cellular Function, Tottori University, Yonago, Tottori 683-8503, Japan.

Bladder cancer is divided into two molecular subtypes, luminal and basal, which form papillary and nodular tumors, respectively, and are identifiable by gene expression profiling. Although loss of heterozygosity (LOH) of the long arm of human chromosome 9 (9q) has been observed in the early development of both types of bladder cancer, the functional significance of LOH remains to be clarified. The present study introduced human chromosome 9q into basal bladder cancer cell line, SCaBER, using microcell-mediated chromosome transfer to investigate the effect of LOH of 9q on molecular bladder cancer subtypes.

A 60-year-old woman developed a fifth thoracic spine fracture with progressive paraplegia and underwent posterior spine fusion in June 2018. Based on the histopathological analysis of the surgical specimen, she was diagnosed with KIT D816V-positive systemic mastocytosis (SM). In June 2019, peripheral blood examination revealed remarkable eosinophilia.

Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor (SGLT2i) treatment is a therapeutic approach for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Some reports have shown that SGLT2i treatment improves insulin resistance; however, few studies have evaluated insulin resistance by the glucose clamp method. Hepatic insulin clearance (HIC) is a new pathophysiological mechanism of T2DM.

Instruction: The human amphoterin-induced gene and open reading frame (AMIGO) was identified as a novel cell adhesion molecule of type I transmembrane protein. AMIGO2 is one of three members of the AMIGO family (AMIGO1, 2, and 3), and the similarity between them is approximately 40% at the amino acid level. We have previously shown that AMIGO2 functions as a driver of liver metastasis.

Background: We investigated the effect of the extent of pelvic lymph node dissection (LND) on biochemical recurrence (BCR) in patients with prostate cancer (PCa) without lymph node involvement (LNI) treated with robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP).

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed data from 378 patients who underwent RARP with LND at our hospital between October 2010 and June 2019. The BCR-free survival rate was determined using Kaplan-Meier analysis, and Cox regression analysis was used to investigate BCR prognostic factors.
