Purpose: We determined the usefulness of the estimation of physiologic ability and surgical stress (E-PASS), initially reported as a predictive factor for postoperative morbidity and mortality, as a prognostic indicator in stage II colorectal cancer (CRC).

Methods: Overall, 739 patients who underwent proctocolectomy for CRC at Tottori University Hospital and affiliated hospitals and histologically diagnosed with stage II CRC were included in the current study.

Results: A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis of the five-year recurrence-free survival indicated that the comprehensive risk score (CRS) of E-PASS predicted postoperative recurrence.

Gastroduodenal peptic ulcers are the main cause of nonvariceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB). We believe that recent advances in endoscopic techniques and devices for diagnosing upper gastrointestinal tract tumors have advanced hemostasis for UGIB. However, few prospective multicenter studies have examined how these changes affect the prognosis.

Introduction: Autoimmune encephalitis (AIE) is a relatively newly described category of immune-mediated diseases involving the central nervous system with a wide spectrum of clinical presentations, ranging from relatively mild or insidious onset of cognitive impairment to more complex forms of encephalopathy with medically refractory seizures. Single or multifocal seizures accompanied by neuropsychiatric symptoms and cognitive or memory impairments are suggestive of clinical features at AIE onset.

Case Report: A six-year-old boy presented with repetitive focal seizures, slowly progressive emotional liability, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder-like symptoms.

Risk factors for recurrence in elderly patients with stage II colorectal cancer: a multicenter retrospective study.

BMC Cancer

April 2022

Division of Gastrointestinal and Pediatric Surgery, Department of Surgery, School of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Tottori University, 36-1 Nishi-cho, Yonago, 683-8504, Japan.

Background: Adjuvant chemotherapy for stage II colorectal cancer (CRC) is considered appropriate for patients with risk factors for recurrence, rather than for all patients uniformly. However, the risk factors for recurrence remain controversial, and there is limited information, especially for elderly patients. The Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) is widely used as a simple nutritional screening tool in the elderly and is associated with cancer prognosis and recurrence.

Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is still a relatively uncommon condition and it is not well known how to administer argatroban during continuous hemodiafiltration (CHDF). A 72-year-old man required CHDF with heparin because of the oliguria and hyperpotassemia directly after the open repair of a juxtarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm. As the postoperative blood platelet count dropped and there was a thrombus in the CHDF circuit, HIT was suspected and nafamostat mesilate, but not heparin, was immediately administered for CHDF.

The patient received fixation by banding to treat a fracture after falling from a bed about 5 months previously, and he was referred to our hospital due to the finding of a left subclavian pulsatile mass.

Middle colic artery aneurysms are rare and most have been reported with rupture or symptom. We report the successful elective treatment of a middle colic artery aneurysm without symptom, which is very rare. It failed to perform transcatheter arterial embolization for anatomical reasons, and, thus, the patient, a 77-year-old man, underwent surgical resection in spite of a history of laparotomy.
