Diagnosis of an acute abdomen during an episode of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is crucial for providing appropriate treatments and obtaining favourable outcomes, but may be difficult due to its considerable overlap with multiple intra-abdominal diseases in terms of clinical course and laboratory findings. In this study, we presented a case showing signs of an acute abdomen with sharp rises in serum pancreatic biochemical markers during the treatment of DKA with pyelonephritis. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) was performed to confirm the onset of acute pancreatitis; however, pneumatosis intestinalis and poor enhancement of the rectal wall were detected, indicating the presence of rectal infarction.

The insufficient activity of insulin and the hyperactivity of glucagon are responsible for glucose intolerance in patients with type 2 diabetes. Whereas sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors improve blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes, their effects on the secretion profiles of glucagon and incretins remain unclear. Therefore, to investigate the effects of the SGLT2 inhibitor luseogliflozin on metabolic and endocrine profiles, 19 outpatients with type 2 diabetes were administered luseogliflozin for 12 weeks.

Clinical outcomes of open and closed management after surgical treatments in patients with medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw.

J Stomatol Oral Maxillofac Surg

February 2022

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, School of Dental Medicine, Tsurumi University, 2-3-1 Tsurumi, Tsurumi-ku, Yokohama 230-8501, Japan.

Context And Purpose: To achieve success following surgical treatment of MRONJ, complete wound closure has been considered necessary; open wound management has not been generally recommended. Therefore, various closure techniques using local flaps have been reported. However, these techniques often increase surgical invasiveness, and there is minimal evidence regarding whether complete wound closure is preferable to open wound management following surgical treatment of MRONJ.

Background/purpose: Hamstring tendon autografts are commonly used for double-bundle anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (DB-ACLR). If the volume of the semitendinosus (ST) tendon is insufficient, the gracilis (G) tendon is also harvested. Additional harvesting of the G autograft can affect patients' short-term postoperative outcome, such as muscle recovery; thus, preoperative information about whether an additional G autograft is needed would be useful.

June 2020

Department of Clinical Immunology, Clinical Research Center for Rheumatology and Allergy, Sagamihara National Hospital, National Hospital Organization, 18-1 Sakuradai, Minami-ku, Sagamihara, Kanagawa 252-0392, Japan.

Metal allergy is usually diagnosed by patch testing, however, the results do not necessarily reflect the clinical symptoms because of cross-reactivity between different metals. In this study, we established the novel mouse model of cross-reactive metal allergy, and aimed to elucidate the immune response in terms of T-cell receptor repertoire. This model was classified into two groups: the sensitization to nickel and challenge with palladium group, and the sensitization to chromium and challenge with palladium group.

In patients with lepromatous leprosy, Mycobacterium leprae is often observed inside the human microvascular endothelial cells (HMVEC) surrounding Schwann cells (SC) at the site of lesions in the peripheral nerves. Based on this observation, it is considered that the nasal mucous may be the invasion pathway for M. leprae and HMVEC serve as an important reservoir for the bacteria before they invade SC.
