Objectives: To investigate the distribution of multiple cytokines in gastroschisis and reveal its association with clinical outcomes, including gastrointestinal disorders and fetal brain damage caused by chronic inflammation in gastroschisis.
Methods: We obtained amniotic fluid and arterial cord blood from 10 patients with gastroschisis, and evaluated the profile of 40 cytokines via multiplex immunoassay. The possible relationship of the cytokines with the time taken to attain full enteral nutrition and cord S100B, a surrogate marker of brain damage, was estimated.

Background: Previous studies suggest that the pathophysiology of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is characterized not only by high ventricular stiffness, but also by vascular stiffness. Azilsartan has higher vascular affinity compared with other angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs), which were proven to have no beneficial effects on clinical outcomes in patients with HFpEF in earlier clinical trials. We aimed to test the hypothesis that azilsartan may improve left ventricular diastolic function in HFpEF patients with hypertension in this trial.

Background/aim: High serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels predict mortality independent of bone metabolism parameters and liver function test results in patients on hemodialysis. The relationship between serum ALP at dialysis initiation and mortality during maintenance dialysis is unknown; therefore, we aimed to identify an association.
Methods: This multicenter, prospective cohort study analyzed 1,213 patients registered in the Aichi Cohort Study of Prognosis in Patients Newly Initiated into Dialysis from October 2011 to September 2013.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of CapeOX plus bevacizumab with a planned oxaliplatin stop-and-go strategy in Japanese patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC).
Methods: Patients with untreated mCRC were treated with 4 cycles of CapeOX plus bevacizumab therapy, followed by capecitabine plus bevacizumab maintenance therapy. Reintroduction of oxaliplatin was scheduled after 8 cycles of maintenance therapy or upon tumor progression.

Background: Advantages of neoadjuvant chemotherapy combined with monoclonal antibodies for treating patients with resectable colorectal cancer liver metastasis (CLM) have not been established. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of oxaliplatin-based regimen (FOLFOX or XELOX) plus monoclonal antibodies (cetuximab or bevacizumab) treatment in patients with resectable CLM.
Methods: A single-arm, open-label, multicenter, phase II trial was conducted for patients aged ≥ 20 years with resectable and untreated CLM.

Purpose: We investigated the efficacy of 2 α1-blockers with different affinities for the α1-adrenoceptor subtypes silodosin and naftopidil in the treatment of benign prostatic enlargement complicated by overactive bladder.
Materials And Methods: This was a prospective, open label, randomized, multicenter study of 350 outpatients with untreated benign prostatic enlargement associated with urinary urgency at least once per week and an OABSS (Overactive Bladder Symptom Score) of 3 or greater. Patients were randomly assigned to receive silodosin 8 mg per day or naftopidil 75 mg per day.

Serum soluble thrombomodulin is known to be a factor in visceral vascular disorders such as organic vasculitis in collagen diseases, but recently it has also been reported as a predictor of thrombotic crisis in thrombotic diseases. In this report, serum soluble thrombomodulin levels and events of thrombotic crises in clinical patients were studied retrospectively in our dermatology department over the past five years. I found an increase in soluble thrombomodulin one to two months before the crisis in eight of ten patients including three with anti-phospholipid syndrome, two with lupus anticoagulant-positive systemic lupus erythematosus, four patients with chronic disseminated intravascular coagulation syndrome and one patient with thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura.

The possible contribution of a non-adrenergic, non-cholinergic (NANC) vasodilator mechanism in human nasal mucosa was studied using an in vitro muscle tension measuring technique. Strips of the nasal mucosa were suspended in a Magnus tube filled with Krebs solution and aerated with 95% O2. Isometric changes in tension were detected on administration of various drugs under electric stimulation and recorded with a transducer.

The efficacy of combined hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy and hyperthermia for unresectable hepatic tumors of colorectal cancer was retrospectively compared with hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy alone. Nine cases were treated with combination therapy and eight cases were treated with hepatic arterial infusion alone. The response rate in the combined hepatic arterial infusion/hyperthermia group was higher (44% v 25%) and the survival period longer (2-year survival, 35% v 12%) than in the group treated with hepatic arterial infusion alone.

We report a 69-yr-old female with a liver mass which, when surgically resected, was believed to be the spontaneous complete necrosis of hepatocellular carcinoma. The preoperative level of alpha-fetoprotein was high at 1050 ng/ml, and the mass was grossly an encapsulated nodular lesion with septa. Histologically, no viable tumor cells were demonstrated.

We report on a girl having congenital chloride diarrhea (CCD) who has been followed for 7 years and 6 months sequentially. Dilated intestinal loops, marked enlargement of the abdominal circumference of the fetus and hydramnios were noted by ultrasound examination at 31 weeks of gestation. After delivery by cesarean section for hydramnios, she excreted profuse watery yellow green stools with marked abdominal distension.

A novel cultured cell line, NCU-L-1, was established from a 71-year-old Japanese woman with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, L3 FAB, Burkitt's type. The NCU-L-1 cells were shown to have a mature B-cell phenotype on the basis of immunologic surface marker analysis; including IgG Lambda surface immunoglobulins, CD19, CD20 and la-like antigen which were all detected on the cells. Intracytoplasmic immunoglobulin was not detected, but IgG was present in the cell culture supernatant.
