Stereotypes and social decisions: The interpersonal consequences of socioeconomic status.

Perceptions of socioeconomic status (SES) can perpetuate inequality by influencing interpersonal interactions in ways that disadvantage people with low SES. Indeed, lab studies have provided evidence that people can detect others' SES and that they may use this information to apply stereotypes that influence interpersonal decisions. Here, we examine how SES and SES-based stereotypes affect real-world social interactions between people from a socioeconomically diverse population.

Electrocardiogram-based machine learning for risk stratification of patients with suspected acute coronary syndrome.

Background And Aims: The importance of risk stratification in patients with chest pain extends beyond diagnosis and immediate treatment. This study sought to evaluate the prognostic value of electrocardiogram feature-based machine learning models to risk-stratify all-cause mortality in those with chest pain.

Methods: This was a prospective observational cohort study of consecutive, non-traumatic patients with chest pain.

Why is learning from patient safety incidents (still) so hard? A sociocultural perspective on learning from incidents in healthcare organizations.

Purpose: Despite robust quality improvement efforts in healthcare, learning from patient safety incidents remains difficult. Our study explores counter-vailing powers shaping learning processes and possibilities in healthcare organizations, with a focus on social, political and organizational dynamics of learning.

Design/methodology/approach: Deploying concepts of situated curriculum, boundary work and interconnected knowledge practices, we interviewed staff and physicians ( = 15) in a large Academic Health Science Centre in Canada about their experiences of incident investigations and resultant information sharing.

Background: There is consensus on the safety of standard dose direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) for stroke prevention in patients undergoing cardioversion of atrial fibrillation (AF), but outcomes of reduced dose DOACs in this setting remain unclear.

Objective: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to compare the rate of cardioversion-associated thromboembolic events between patients taking reduced dose DOACs and those receiving standard dose anticoagulation.

Methods: A systematic search was conducted for studies published between January 1, 2009, and February 16, 2024 in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials.

Metaverse technologies in acute care medical education: A scoping review.

Background: The concept of the metaverse is a virtual world that immerses users, allowing them to interact with the digital environment. Due to metaverse's utility in collaborative and immersive simulation, it can be advantageous for medical education in high-stakes care settings such as emergency, critical, and acute care. Consequently, there has been a growth in educational metaverse use, which has yet to be characterized alongside other simulation modalities literature.

Congenital conjunctival cyst detected by prenatal ultrasound.

Purpose: The purpose of this manuscript is to report a rare case of an orbital cyst detected intrauterine with sonography.

Observation: A 23-year-old female presented for routine prenatal monitoring when an orbital cyst was detected with a transabdominal ultrasound. Uncomplicated cesarean section was performed at 38 weeks gestation with proptosis of the left globe being noted on ophthalmic examination of the newborn.

Vascular Access for Home Hemodialysis: A Perspective on Tunneled Central Venous Catheters at Home.

Expansion of home hemodialysis (HHD) provides an opportunity to improve clinical outcomes, reduce cost of care, and address the staffing challenges currently faced in caring for patients with kidney failure on replacement therapy. To increase HHD expansion, current practices and barriers to home dialysis must be examined and addressed. One such barrier is vascular access for HHD; although tunneled hemodialysis central venous catheters (CVCs) have been used for decades, physicians still hesitate to send patients home without a mature, functional arteriovenous access.

The bone is a highly dynamic organ that undergoes continuous remodeling through an intricate balance of bone formation and degradation. Hyperactivation of the bone-degrading cells, the osteoclasts (OCs), occurs in disease conditions and hormonal changes in females, resulting in osteoporosis, a disease characterized by altered microarchitecture of the bone tissue, and increased bone fragility. Thus, building robust assays to quantify OC resorptive activity to examine the molecular mechanisms underlying bone degradation is critical.

Opioid toxicity deaths in Indigenous people who experienced incarceration in Ontario, Canada 2015-2020: a whole population retrospective cohort study.

Background: While Indigenous people are overrepresented in Canada's prisons and in the toxic drug supply crisis, we lack data on the harms related to opioids for Indigenous people with experiences of incarceration. We aimed to examine opioid toxicity deaths in Indigenous peoples who experienced incarceration and to compare opioid toxicity mortality rates with rates for people with no incarceration.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study linked correctional data for all people who were incarcerated in provincial correctional facilities and coronial data for all people who died from opioid toxicity in Ontario, Canada between 2015 and 2020.

Concurrent malignant biliary and gastric outlet obstruction requires urgent palliative intervention to improve patient quality of life and permit systemic therapy. Traditional management has been surgical gastrojejunostomy and hepaticojejunostomy, two morbid procedures. Comparatively, endoscopic stenting can relieve both sites of obstruction with less complications and quicker recovery.

Genetic Assessment of Living Kidney Transplant Donors: A Survey of Canadian Practices.

Background: Kidney failure is a prevalent condition with tendency for familial clustering in up to 27% of the affected individuals. Living kidney donor (LKD) transplantation is the optimal treatment option; however, in Canada, more than 45% of LKDs are biologically related to their recipients which subjects recipients to worse graft survival and donors to higher future risk of kidney failure. Background: Given the chronic immune activation and inflammatory milieu associated with Long COVID and HIV, we assessed the prevalence of Long COVID in adults living with HIV; and investigated whether adults living with HIV were associated with increased chance of developing Long COVID compared to adults living without HIV.

Methods: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched Medline, EMBASE, CINHAL, PubMed and CENTRAL from inception until June 14th, 2024, for observational studies that measured the prevalence of Long COVID in adults living with HIV and the odds of developing Long COVID following a SARS-CoV-2 infection in people living with HIV compared to people living without HIV. Reviews, case reports, randomised control trials and editorials were excluded.

Identifying biomarker-driven subphenotypes of cardiogenic shock: analysis of prospective cohorts and randomized controlled trials.
