  • Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) can lead to long-lasting remission in adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) patients, but there's a lack of research on post-transplant outcomes for younger patients (≤49 years).
  • A study found that patients aged <40 years had a significantly better overall survival rate (61.8%) compared to those aged 40-49 years (43.1%), indicating younger patients fare better post-transplant.
  • Moreover, while there were no major differences in survival outcomes between different conditioning regimens, the reduced-intensity conditioning (RIC) regimen resulted in lower non-relapse mortality compared to the myeloablative conditioning (MAC) regimen

  • Many Asian countries still use stigmatizing terms for diabetes that reference sugar and urine, unlike the global trend of using language derived from its Greek origin meaning "to pass through."
  • The 16th Scientific Meeting of the Asian Association for the Study of Diabetes (AASD) included a key symposium discussing the negative impact of current diabetes terminology in Asia.
  • Participants agreed on the need to revise these terms to reduce stigma and decided to continue the conversation at the next scientific meeting in 2025.

Ruxolitinib, a Janus kinase (JAK1-JAK2) inhibitor, has demonstrated safety and efficacy in patients with graft-versus-host disease (GvHD). This phase 3 randomized trial (REACH3) evaluated the efficacy and the safety of ruxolitinib 10 mg twice daily compared with investigator-selected best available therapy (BAT) in a subgroup of Japanese patients (n = 37) with steroid-refractory or dependent (SR/D) chronic GvHD. At data cut-off, treatment was ongoing in 17 patients and discontinued in 20.

  • Some people with a condition called renal hypouricemia (RHU) have very low levels of uric acid, which might be linked to kidney problems, but we don’t know much about how it affects kidney function.
  • A study looked at 13 RHU patients over about 5.5 years and found that their kidney function (eGFR) didn't get worse, while it did for others without RHU.
  • RHU patients with different types of genetic mutations also showed no major differences in how their kidney function changed over time.

  • A multicenter phase III trial is being conducted to evaluate a dexamethasone-based mouthwash for preventing chemotherapy-induced stomatitis in early breast cancer patients.
  • The study will involve 230 patients, randomly assigned to either the dexamethasone mouthwash group or a control group using tap water as mouthwash.
  • The main goal is to measure the effectiveness of the mouthwash in reducing the incidence of stomatitis, tracked through electronic patient-reported outcomes.

Aim: To explore the efficacy and safety of once-weekly insulin icodec (icodec) in Japanese adults (≥20 years old) with type 2 diabetes from the global ONWARDS 1, 2 and 4 trials.

Materials And Methods: Insulin-naive (ONWARDS 1) and insulin-experienced (ONWARDS 2 and 4) individuals were randomized to icodec or a once-daily insulin comparator: insulin glargine U100 [ONWARDS 1 (basal insulin only) and 4 (basal-bolus regimen)] or insulin degludec [ONWARDS 2 (basal insulin only)]. The primary outcome was change in glycated haemoglobin from baseline to end of treatment (EOT) (ONWARDS 1: Week 52; ONWARDS 2 and 4: Week 26).

Unlabelled: The association of renal function with fracture incidence during teriparatide or alendronate treatment in elderly Japanese women was examined. Fracture incidence differed by fracture type, renal function, and treatment protocol. The results provide important information on pharmacotherapy in clinical practice for osteoporosis.

  • Incidental dural tears (DTs) during cervical spine surgery are a serious concern, yet their effects on patient-reported outcomes (PROs) one year post-surgery are not well understood.
  • The study investigated patients who had elective cervical spine surgeries, examining pre- and postoperative PROs in relation to the occurrence of DTs, identifying complications and differences between patients with and without DTs.
  • Results showed that out of 2,704 patients, 3.6% had DTs, leading to higher rates of complications and more severe neck and pain outcomes in those affected compared to those without DTs.

  • * In the JCOG0502 trial, 368 patients were observed, where 209 opted for surgery and 159 chose CRT, despite having similar characteristics apart from age.
  • * A study found that patients aged 65 and older, males, those with multiple lesions, those without children, and the advice of their doctor were key factors in choosing CRT, with the doctor's opinion being the most impactful.

Purpose: Transarterial radioembolization (TARE) is effective for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma; however, it awaits approval in Japan. This study aimed to simulate the cost-effectiveness of TARE over chemoembolization when TARE is approved in Japan and identify the requirements for cost-effectiveness.

Materials And Methods: A Markov model was constructed to analyze the costs and effectiveness associated with TARE and transarterial chemoembolization with drug-eluting beads (DEB-TACE) for 2-month cycles over 5 years.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the newly established oncological criteria of resectability of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) for selecting suitable candidates for systemic and combination therapy.

Methods: The data of 156 consecutive HCC patients with intrahepatic target nodules who had initially received systemic therapy (lenvatinib and atezolizumab plus bevacizumab) were reviewed. The patients were classified into three groups according to the novel oncological criteria for resectability (R, resectable; BR1, borderline resectable 1; and BR2, borderline resectable 2).

We report a case of a man who was diagnosed with superficial hypopharyngeal cancer and recurrence of renal cell carcinoma in the duodenum, liver, and gluteus medius muscle simultaneously. He underwent endoscopic submucosal dissection for hypopharyngeal cancer in parallel with systemic immunotherapy for recurrent renal cell carcinoma, resulting in completely overcoming both malignancies. Endoscopic submucosal dissection is less invasive and can be performed in a shorter duration for treating superficial hypopharyngeal cancer compared with other treatment options, such as radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and surgery.

  • Tailored axillary surgery (TAS) is a new method for selectively removing metastatic lymph nodes in breast cancer patients using a breast biopsy clip and point marker.
  • The study involved 30 patients, with 20 undergoing TAS after neoadjuvant chemotherapy, achieving a 90% success rate and 0% false-negative rate in cases also undergoing traditional dissection.
  • The findings suggest that TAS is a safe and effective approach for treating breast cancer with lymph node metastases.

  • A 62-year-old man was admitted to the hospital with back pain, leg swelling, and fever; blood tests revealed bacteria linked to his symptoms and a CT scan showed a tumor in his chest.
  • The patient's low gamma globulin levels indicated a possibility of Good's syndrome, which increases infection risk, so he was treated with antibiotics and preoperative gamma globulin before surgery.
  • The patient successfully underwent a minimally invasive thymectomy and was monitored as an outpatient, with no infections recurring post-surgery.

Background: Although polygenic risk scores (PRSs) are expected to be helpful in precision medicine, it remains unclear whether high-PRS groups are more likely to benefit from preventive interventions for diseases. Recent methodological advancements enable us to predict treatment effects at the individual level.

Methods: We employed causal forest to explore the relationship between PRSs and individual risk of diseases associated with certain environmental factors.
