Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are becoming pivotal in managing gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Current Japanese guidelines for GERD recommend vonoprazan (VPZ) as a treatment option for mild reflux esophagitis (RE). However, it has been hypothesized that 4 weeks of VPZ 20 mg is not always necessary for mild RE if the treatment outcome is based on patient symptoms.

Background and objective Drug-eluting beads (DEB) have been highly useful in the current treatment strategies for multiple and large hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC) with or without systemic therapy. Recently, smaller beads have become available in Japan. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the most convenient and effective way to reduce the loading time of epirubicin into the drug-eluting beads M1 (DC Bead M1; 70-150 µm).

Background: The advantage of intensified myeloablative conditioning (MAC) over standard MAC has not been determined in haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) for adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) patients.
Methods: To evaluate heterogeneous effects of intensified MAC among individuals, we analyzed the registry database of adult ALL patients between 2000 and 2021. After propensity score matching, we applied a machine-learning Bayesian causal forest algorithm to develop a prediction model of individualized treatment effect (ITE) of intensified MAC on reduction in overall mortality at 1 year after HSCT.

Purpose: To re-evaluate images recovered from JCOG0911, a randomized phase 2 trial for newly diagnosed glioblastoma (nGBM) conducted by the Japan Clinical Oncology Group (JCOG) Brain Tumor Study Group.
Methods: The correlation between tumor volumes and survival was evaluated, followed by progression-free survival (PFS) analysis by independent central review based on Response Assessment in Neuro-Oncology (RANO) criteria using MRI recovered from 118 nGBM patients enrolled in the JCOG0911 trial. A radiomic analysis was also performed to identify radiomic features predictive of nGBM prognosis.

We have achieved good results of renal transarterial embolization (TAE) therapy as an alternative to surgical nephrectomy to decrease renal size in autosomal polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) patients with enlarged kidneys, but only in patients on dialysis. Renal transplantation is another treatment option, and patients who receive a donor kidney have achieved a reduction in kidney size after surgery. TAE has also been used in polycystic liver disease (PCLD), an extrarenal lesion of ADPKD.

We retrospectively evaluated the impacts of using granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) and its timing on posttransplant outcomes for 9766 adults with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) between 2013 and 2022 using a Japanese database. We separately evaluated three distinct cohorts based on graft type: 3248 received bone marrow transplantation (BMT), 3066 received peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT), and 3452 received single-unit cord blood transplantation (CBT). Multivariate analysis showed that G-CSF administration significantly accelerated neutrophil recovery after BMT, PBSCT, and CBT.

Background: Although the kidney failure risk equation (KFRE), a well-known predictive model for predicting dialysis dependency, is useful, it remains unclear whether the addition of biomarker changes to the KFRE model in patients with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) <30 ml/min/1.73 m will improve its predictive value.
Methods: We retrospectively identified adults with eGFR <30 ml/min/1.

Objectives: C-reactive protein (CRP) is a well-known acute-phase protein that increases remarkably under various inflammatory conditions and is elevated in patients with malignant tumors. In this study, we investigated the influence of CRP on the tumor microenvironment in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC).
Methods: This study explored CRP's role in ccRCC by co-culturing human macrophages with ccRCC cells and employing antibody blocking, RNA sequencing and experiments for functional insights.
This study aimed to investigate the prognostic relevance of cytogenetic risk in 9826 adults with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) who underwent allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) during the first or second complete remission. The 5-year probabilities of overall survival (OS) were 66%, 61%, and 47% (P < 0.001), the cumulative incidences of relapse were 14%, 19%, and 32% (P < 0.

Background: Statins bring favourable effects on the clinical prognosis of patients with atherosclerotic disease partly through their anti-inflammatory properties. However, this effect has not been fully verified in patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD). We aimed to test whether statins exert different prognostic effects depending on the degrees of inflammation in patients with PAD.

Recent advances in systemic therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) have led to debates about the feasibility of combination therapies, such as systemic therapy combined with surgery or transarterial chemoembolization, for patients with advanced HCC. However, a lack of consensus on the oncological resectability criteria has hindered discussions of "conversion therapy" and the optimal management in patients with HCC. To address this issue, the Japan Liver Cancer Association (JLCA) and the Japanese Society of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery (JSHBPS) established a working group and discussed the concept of borderline resectable HCC.

The tripartite ancestral structure is a recently proposed model for the genetic origin of modern Japanese, comprising indigenous Jomon hunter-gatherers and two additional continental ancestors from Northeast Asia and East Asia. To investigate the impact of the tripartite structure on genetic and phenotypic variation today, we conducted biobank-scale analyses by merging Biobank Japan (BBJ; n = 171,287) with ancient Japanese and Eurasian genomes (n = 22). We demonstrate the applicability of the tripartite model to Japanese populations throughout the archipelago, with an extremely strong correlation between Jomon ancestry and genomic variation among individuals.

Background: Famotidine, a histamine2-receptor antagonist (H2Ras), is widely used to treat and prevent gastrointestinal symptoms during pregnancy. Although several studies have reported the use of H2Ras during pregnancy, limited data on famotidine were included in these reports. Therefore, we analyzed pregnancy outcome data to evaluate the effects of famotidine use during pregnancy on the fetus.
