Recent progresses in high-throughput technologies have led to a new scenario in investigating pathologies, named the "Omics era", which integrate the opportunity to collect large amounts of data and information at the molecular and protein levels together with the development of novel computational and statistical tools that are able to analyze and filter such data. Subsequently, advances in genotyping arrays, next generation sequencing, mass spectrometry technology, and bioinformatics allowed for the simultaneous large-scale study of thousands of genes (genomics), epigenetics factors (epigenomics), RNA (transcriptomics), metabolites (metabolomics) and proteins(proteomics), with the possibility of integrating multiple types of omics data ("multi -omics"). All of these technological innovations have modified the approach to the study of complex diseases, such as Alzheimer's Disease (AD), thus representing a promising tool to investigate the relationship between several molecular pathways in AD as well as other pathologies.

Purpose: To investigate intraprostatic gold coils positional stability analyzing intermarker distance in on-board cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans acquired throughout the entire treatment course.
Methods And Materials: A total of 29 fiducial markers (FMs) were implanted in 10 patients through the transperineal approach, under ultrasound guidance. After 2 weeks from the FM implantation, all the patients underwent CT and magnetic resonance imaging under radiation therapy-planning conditions.

Purpose: Aim of the present work is to evaluate the synthetic single crystal diamond Schottky photodiode developed at the laboratories of "Tor Vergata" University in Rome in a new dosimeter configuration specifically designed for offline wireless in vivo dosimetry (IVD) applications.
Methods: The new diamond based dosimeter, single crystal diamond detector (SCDD-iv), consists of a small unwired detector and a small external reading unit that can be connected to commercial electrometers for getting the detector readout after irradiation. Two nominally identical SCDD-iv dosimeter prototypes were fabricated and tested.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the dosimetric effect of Elekta Beam Modulator in 3-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3DCRT) and in intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) for localized prostate cancer. We compared treatment plans developed with 2 different Elekta multileaf collimators (MLC): Beam Modulator micro-MLC (mMLC) (4-mm leaf width at the isocenter) and standard MLC (10-mm leaf width at the isocenter). The comparison was performed for 15 patients with localized prostate cancer in 3DCRT and IMRT delivery; a total of 60 treatment plans were processed.

Facial nerve schwannoma (FNS) is an extremely rare benign tumour that may arise anywhere along the course of the facial nerve; the standard treatment is total removal via microsurgery. Stereotactic radiotherapy has been shown to be effective in the treatment of skull base tumours, in particular for acoustic neuromas; it is interesting to notice that also the few data existing in literature about the use of radiotherapy for non acoustic schwannomas show an excellent local control rate and few adverse effects. Here we report a case of facial nerve neuroma, involving the nerve sheath from the geniculate ganglion to the parotid gland, treated with fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy after debulking surgery.

Purpose: During radiological interventional procedures (RIP) the skin of a patient under examination may undergo a prolonged x-ray exposure, receiving a dose as high as 5 Gy in a single session. This paper describes the use of the OneDose(TM) cable-free system based on p-type MOSFET detectors to determine the entrance skin dose (ESD) at selected points during RIP.
Methods: At first, some dosimetric characteristics of the detector, such as reproducibility, linearity, and fading, have been investigated using a C-arc as a source of radiation.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to define a method to evaluate the total dose delivered to the rectum during the whole treatment course in six patients undergoing irradiation for prostate cancer using an offline definition of organ motion with images from a cone beam CT (CBCT) scanner available on a commercial linear accelerator.
Methods: Patient set-up was verified using a volumetric three-dimensional CBCT scanner; 9-14 CBCT scans were obtained for each patient. Images were transferred to a commercial treatment planning system for offline organ motion analysis.

Non-invasive brain stimulation methods, such as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), are currently used to modulate the excitability of the cerebral cortex, providing important insights into mechanisms of cortical plasticity. Used to create long-lasting changes in the excitability of synapses, rTMS has been intensively investigated as a therapeutic tool in several neurological and psychiatric conditions and given some promising results. Recent studies have shown that rTMS of cerebellar structures is capable of inducing long-lasting changes in the excitability of cerebello-thalamo-cortical pathways.

Background: The efficacy and toxicity of hypofractionated stereotactic radiotherapy (HSRT) in combination with whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT), for the treatment of 1-4 brain metastases, using a non invasive fixation of the skull, was investigated.
Methods: Between 04/2001 and 01/2006 30 patients with 44 brain metastases underwent irradiation. Every patient received WBRT (10 x 3 Gy); 41/44 lesions received HSRT boost with a median dose fraction of 6 Gy, the fractionation schemes were 3 x 6 Gy and 4 x 8 Gy; a median total dose of 18 Gy was delivered to the tumor isocenter.

Aims And Background: The purpose of our research was to assess the effectiveness and safety of percutaneous kyphoplasty, the new method of treatment for pain deriving from vertebral compression fractures due to myeloma.
Methods: We treated 3 patients with pain refractory to conventional medical therapy (analgesics, bed-rest, bracing with orthopedic devices for more than 4 weeks), localized in the lumbar area, painful to the touch and in the absence of neurological signs.
Results: The method demonstrated a swift pain relief associated with an evident augmentation in the resistance and restoration of the vertebral body's physiological shape.
