(Mab) is an opportunistic nontuberculous mycobacterium responsible of difficult-to-treat pulmonary infections in vulnerable patients, such as those suffering from Cystic Fibrosis (CF), where it represents a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Additionally, due to the intrinsic extensive antimicrobial resistance spectrum displayed by this species and the side effects reported for some available antibiotics, the therapeutic management of such infections remains extremely difficult. In the present study, we show that phosphatidylserine liposomes (PS-L) enhance intracellular mycobacterial killing of Mab infected human macrophages with functional or pharmacologically inhibited cystic fibrosis conductance regulator (CFTR), by a mechanism involving phagosome acidification and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production.

Objective: The prevalence of anxiety and depression in patients diagnosed with Alopecia Areata (AA) is very high and this significant burden of psychological symptoms threatens the Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) of affected patients. Indeed, AA often does not produce significant physical symptoms, but it nonetheless disrupts many areas of mental health. Clinical assessment of disease severity may not reliably predict patient's HRQoL, nor may it predict the patient's perception of illness.

Background And Aims: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) risk factors include high cholesterol. Children with total cholesterol (TC) levels ≥ 170 mg/dL are usually considered hypercholesterolemic. This study aimed at investigating the awareness of TC levels in a large Italian paediatric population and at looking for a possible correlation between their TC and TC in their parents' blood.

Introduction: Crystalluria is an important indicator of renal stone recurrence. Mechanisms underlying urinary stone formation are still not fully understood and raising interests has been giving to intestinal commensal bacteria for their contribute in maintaining urinary solutes equilibrium. The aim of our phase II study was to examine the administration of potassium citrate, magnesium and probiotics in order to reduce crystalluria.

(alias: mixed-lineage leukemia []) gene mapping on chromosome 11q23 encodes the lysine-specific histone N-methyltransferase 2A and promotes transcription by inducing an open chromatin conformation. Numerous genomic breakpoints within the gene have been reported in young children and adults with hematologic disorders and are present in up to 10% of acute leukemias. These rearrangements describe distinct features and worse prognosis depending on the fusion partner, characterized by chemotherapy resistance and high rates of relapse, with a progression-free survival of 30-40% and overall survival below 25%.

(1) Background: The literature reports a low risk of serious bacterial infections (SBIs) in febrile infants presenting with bronchiolitis or respiratory syncytial virus infection, but current microbiological techniques have a higher accuracy. (2) Methods: We assessed the risk of SBIs in neonates and infants with bronchiolitis from 2021 to 2023. We also evaluated C-reactive protein, procalcitonin, and leukocyte values.

The volatilome profile of some biofluids (blood, urine, and human semen) identified by Solid-Phase Microextraction-Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (SPME-GC/MS) and collected from young men living in two high-pollution areas in Italy, i.e., Land of Fires and Valley of Sacco River, have been coupled to sperm parameters obtained by spermiogram analysis to build general multiple regression models.

: The SOUND study demonstrated that an axillary de-escalation may be sufficient in locoregional and distant disease control in selected early breast cancer (EBC) patients. To establish any preoperative variables that may drive sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) omission, a study named sentinel omission risk factor (SOFT) 1.23 was planned.

The increase in life expectancy and an aging demographic have led to a surge in chronic diseases, presenting substantial challenges to healthcare systems worldwide. Chronic conditions are characterized by their long-term nature, recurrence and incurability, necessitating effective management strategies. This paper aims to explore the concept of self-care as a pivotal element in chronic disease management, examining its evolution, components and the role of caregivers in facilitating self-care practices.

The organizational context and the role of head nurses influence the team's performance and behavior. Understanding how decision-making processes influence healthcare professionals' behavior in the management of HAIs could help identify alternative interventions for reducing the risk of infection in healthcare organizations.

Background: Pediatric-onset Multiple Sclerosis (POMS) patients show more inflammatory disease compared with adult-onset MS. However, highly effective treatments are limited with only fingolimod being approved in Italy and natalizumab prescribed as off-label treatment.
Objectives: to compare the efficacy of natalizumab versus fingolimod in POMS.

We develop a numerical method for simulating the dynamics of a droplet immersed in a generic time-dependent velocity gradient field. This approach is grounded on the hybrid coupling between the lattice Boltzmann (LB) method, employed for the flow simulation, and the immersed boundary (IB) method, utilized to couple the droplet with the surrounding fluid. We show how to enrich the numerical scheme with a mesh regularization technique, allowing droplets to sustain large deformations.

Background: The reason why some multiple sclerosis (MS) patients show disease activity after alemtuzumab (ALM) is still unclear, but ocrelizumab (OCR) could represent an interesting sequential therapeutic approach.
Objectives: To investigate safety and efficacy of OCR in MS patients with disease activity after two ALM courses.
Methods: Observational retrospective multi-centers Italian cohort study.

Purpose: The ability of current return-to-sport (RTS) tests to predict second anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries (ACLI) in athletes with a history of ACL reconstruction (ACLR) is unclear. This study aimed to prospectively assess the risk of a second ACLI by identifying the most significant deviation in hop test results in professional athletes after ACLR compared to healthy peers.
Methods: A total of 30 professional athletes with a history of ACLR and 30 healthy professional athletes participated in this study.

Single-cell technologies have recently expanded the possibilities for researchers to gain, at an unprecedented resolution level, knowledge about tissue composition, cell complexity, and heterogeneity. Moreover, the integration of data coming from different technologies and sources also offers, for the first time, the possibility to draw a holistic portrait of how cells behave to sustain tissue physiology during the human lifespan and disease. Here, we interrogated and integrated publicly available single-cell RNAseq data to advance the understanding of how macrophages, fibro/adipogenic progenitors, and other cell types establish gene regulatory networks and communicate with each other in the muscle tissue.

The key DNA repair enzyme DNA-PKcs has several and important cellular functions. Loss of DNA-PKcs activity in mice has revealed essential roles in immune and nervous systems. In humans, DNA-PKcs is a critical factor for brain development and function since mutation of the prkdc gene causes severe neurological deficits such as microcephaly and seizures, predicting yet unknown roles of DNA-PKcs in neurons.

Background: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a heterogeneous disease, associated with comorbidities, and high healthcare consumptions and costs. This study assessed the burden before and after treatment with dupilumab in adults with severe AD from 2018 to 2020, from the perspective of the Italian National Health Service (SSN).
Methods: From Fondazione Ricerca e Salute's administrative healthcare database (~5 million inhabitants/year), adults treated with dupilumab from 09/01/2018 to 31/12/2020 (index date) and a five-year lookback were identified.

Background: Placenta accreta spectrum disorders are associated with a high risk of maternal morbidity, particularly when surgery is performed under emergency conditions. This study aimed to investigate the incidence of emergency cesarean delivery in patients with a high probability of placenta accreta spectrum disorders on prenatal imaging and to compare the maternal and neonatal outcomes between patients requiring emergency cesarean delivery and those not requiring emergency cesarean delivery.
