This study evaluates different electrochemical behaviors of modified glassy carbon electrodes (GCEs) for detecting urinary biomarkers related to breast cancer, namely homovanillic acid (HVA) and 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid (4HPA). The analysis was performed in the presence of common urinary interferents, creatinine and urea. Modification of bare GCEs was done through the electropolymerization of N,N'-bis (2-thienylmethylene)-1,X-diaminobenzene (X = 2, 3, 4) isomers, so-called BTMD.

Cerebellar control of targeted tongue movements.

J Physiol

March 2025

Department of Neuroscience, Erasmus MC, Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

The cerebellum is critical for coordinating movements related to eating, drinking and swallowing, all of which require proper control of the tongue. Cerebellar Purkinje cells can encode tongue movements, but it is unclear how their simple spikes and complex spikes induce changes in the shape of the tongue that contribute to goal-directed movements. To study these relations, we recorded and stimulated Purkinje cells in the vermis and hemispheres of mice during spontaneous licking from a stationary or moving water spout.

Phytochromes are red-light-sensitive biliprotein photoreceptors that control a variety of physiological processes in plants, fungi, and bacteria. Lately, greater attention has been paid to these photoreceptors due to their potential as fluorescent probes for deep-tissue microscopy. Such fluorescing phytochromes have been generated by multiple amino acid substitutions in weakly fluorescent wild-type (WT) proteins.

[Study on the invasion of in tissues during carcinogenesis of oral mucosa].

Zhonghua Kou Qiang Yi Xue Za Zhi

February 2025

Department of Oral Medicine, Nanjing Stomatological Hospital, Affiliated Hospital of Medical School, Nanjing University, Nanjing 210008, China.

To explore the differences in bacterial communities within tissues during the process of oral mucosal carcinogenesis, and analyze the relationship between the high-abundance species (Pi) and the occurrence and development of oral mucosal carcinogenesis. Fresh tissue samples were collected from patients diagnosed with oral leukoplakia (OLK), oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), and healthy controls (HC) at Nanjing Stomatological Hospital from January 2022 to November 2024, following strict inclusion criteria. Bacterial DNA was extracted from these specimens, and the 2bRAD sequencing for microbiome (2bRAD-M) was employed to analyze and compare the α and β diversity, as well as the community composition of bacteria within tissues, aiming to identify specifically expressed bacteria.

Mitochondrial Complex V (ATP synthase) deficiency nuclear type 6 (MC5DN6) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by autosomal recessive inheritance and developmental regression, particularly in gross motor skills, which manifests in early childhood. This study aims to present the discovery of a novel variant in four male siblings aged 13 years 9 months to 25 years, making this the fourth family reported globally, while also raising awareness of rare mitochondrial diseases. Four individuals from the same family were retrospectively evaluated based on their demographic, clinical, laboratory, and molecular genetic data.

Background: Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is the leading cause of global mortality, with its incidence rate rising year by year due to the prevalence of metabolic diseases. Existing primary and secondary prevention strategies for cardiovascular disease have limitations in identifying some high-risk groups, and 1.5-level prevention aims to achieve more precise intervention by early identification of subclinical target organ damage.

Introduction: Tongue diagnosis, a cornerstone of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), relies significantly on the assessment of tongue coating, which is used to evaluate Zang-fu organ functions, qi and blood dynamics, and the influence of pathogenic factors. This diagnostic method is integral to disease diagnosis and treatment in TCM. Recent research suggests a strong correlation between the characteristics of tongue coating and its microbial composition.

Exogenous BMI1 expression aggravates oral squamous cell carcinomas in tongue epithelia.

Neoplasia

February 2025

Department of Pharmacology, Weill Cornell Medical College, New York, NY, USA; Meyer Cancer Center, Weill Cornell Medicine, New York, NY, USA; Department of Pharmacology, Weill Cornell Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, New York, NY, USA. Electronic address:

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is characterized by aggressiveness and a poor prognosis, in part because most patients are diagnosed during the later stages of the disease. B cell-specific Moloney murine leukemia virus integration site 1 (BMI1), part of polycomb repressive complex 1 (PRC1), is a key transcription factor overexpressed in OSCC. Although increased BMI1 has been linked to tumor formation in mouse models of the disease, the molecular mechanisms have not been elucidated.
