Sphingomyelin synthase 1 (SMS1) and 2 (SMS2) are two enzymes required for sphingomyelin synthesis, and their roles in tumor transformation and development have been recently recognized. In this work, we systematically evaluated the expression patterns of SMS1 and 2 in ovarian cancer patient samples and cell lines. Furthermore, we analyzed the functions of SMS2 and its underlying mechanisms.

Fangcang hospitals, as tentative hospitals built to treat a huge turnover of patients with mild coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infections, have played a pivotal role to slow down the pandemic spread in China in 2020. However, anxiety and sleep disorders remain tough to address during the treatments. In this study, group psychological intervention in combination with pulmonary rehabilitation exercises were conducted in the trial group for the patients with mild COVID-19 infections in a Fangcang Hospital to mitigate the patients' anxiety and sleep disorders, while conventional nursing methods were done in the control group, with 70 randomly picked patients in each group.

The characteristics and evolution of pulmonary fibrosis in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have not been adequately studied. AI-assisted chest high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) was used to investigate the proportion of COVID-19 patients with pulmonary fibrosis, the relationship between the degree of fibrosis and the clinical classification of COVID-19, the characteristics of and risk factors for pulmonary fibrosis, and the evolution of pulmonary fibrosis after discharge. The incidence of pulmonary fibrosis in patients with severe or critical COVID-19 was significantly higher than that in patients with moderate COVID-19.

Background: Delayed wound healing is one of the major complications of diabetes mellitus and is characterized by prolonged inflammation, delayed re-epithelialization and consistent oxidative stress, although the detailed mechanism remains unknown. In this study, we aimed to investigate the potential role and effect of pterostilbene (PTE) and hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) on diabetic wound healing.

Methods: Diabetic rats were used to measure the epigenetic changes in both HSCs and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs).

Mash-1 modified neural stem cells transplantation promotes neural stem cells differentiation into neurons to further improve locomotor functional recovery in spinal cord injury rats.

Gene

May 2021

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Orthopaedic Implants, Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Huangpu District, Shanghai 200011, China. Electronic address:

Background: Spinal cord injury (SCI) leads to severe motor and sensory dysfunctions. Neural stem cells (NSCs) transplantation therapy plays a positive role in functional recovery after SCI, but the effectiveness of this therapy is limited by inadequate differentiation ability of transplanted NSCs. Mammalian achaete-scute homologue-1 (Mash-1) has been reported to improve differentiation of NSCs.

Cicatricial contracture is likely to occur at the deep burn wound under the armpits after healing, which results in limitation of shoulder abduction and seriously affects the function of upper limbs of patients. Wearing shoulder abduction orthosis is an effective intervention method for cicatricial contracture under the armpits, but the adjustable shoulder abduction orthosis commonly used clinically at present is limited in the adjustable range, and the customized static orthosis can only maintain the corresponding angle of shoulder abduction. Besides, the above two orthosis can only have the function of unilateral extention, and they are time-consuming for patients with need of bilateral extension.

Long-term olfactory dysfunction after single-nostril endoscopic transnasal transsphenoidal pituitary adenoma surgery.

J Clin Neurosci

December 2020

Department of Neurosurgery, The First Hospital of China Medical University, Nanjing Street 155, Heping District, Shenyang, 110001, People's Republic of China. Electronic address:

Background: Over the past decade, the endoscopic transnasal transsphenoidal approach for pituitary adenomas has been widely adopted among neurosurgeons. However, olfactory disturbances have been observed after this procedure, and few studies on long-term (>6 mo) olfactory disturbance after endoscopic transnasal transsphenoidal pituitary adenoma surgery have been conducted. Although we perform minimally invasive endoscopic surgery, some patients continue to experience hyposmia, with some even experience long-term hyposmia.

Background: Impaired wound healing, which is due to various external and internal factors that are involved in wound pathophysiology, leads to high rates of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Oxidative stress injury is an important factor that affects wound healing by changing the whole healing process. So, resveratrol, a dietary fruits polyphenol, which is known for its antioxidant properties, maybe the candidate to accelerate the wound-healing process.

Wound healing is a highly ordered biological process involving a variety of cells, fluids, and molecules. Any obstacles in the link may cause poor wound healing and even the formation of chronic wounds. In recent years, more and more studies have reported that hydrogen peroxide plays an important role in wound healing and throughout the whole process of wound healing.
