January 2025

School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Capital Medical University, Beijing, PR China; Department of National Institute for Drug Clinical Trial, Affiliated Beijing Tongren Hospital of Capital Medical University, Beijing 100005, PR China. Electronic address:

CD276 has been identified as a novel immune checkpoint, and its overexpression is associated with immune evasion and poor prognosis in various tumors, including head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Nimotuzumab, a humanized anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) monoclonal antibody, has been approved for various solid tumors. However, it remains unclear whether its anticancer efficacy involves a reduction in CD276 expression.

Evidence-based Guidelines for Keratorefractive Lenticule Extraction Surgery.

Ophthalmology

November 2024

Evidence-based Medicine Center, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Lanzhou University, Lanzhou, China; WHO Collaborating Centre for Guideline Implementation and Knowledge Translation, Lanzhou University, Lanzhou, China; Lanzhou University GRADE Center, Lanzhou, China.

Topic: Development of evidence-based guidelines for keratorefractive lenticule extraction (KLEx).

Clinical Relevance: KLEx refers to various corneal refractive procedures involving removal of refractive lenticules of intrastromal corneal tissue, typically through a small incision, thereby eliminating creation of a corneal flap. This technique has rapidly gained popularity as a possible alternative to flap-based procedures; however, no clinical practice guidelines exist for KLEx.

School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Capital Medical University, Beijing 100069, PR China; Department of National Institute for Drug Clinical Trial, Affiliated Beijing Tongren Hospital of Capital Medical University, Beijing 100005, PR China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • * In lab tests, nimotuzumab was shown to reduce PD-L1 levels in HNSCC cells by blocking the IFN-γ-induced signaling pathway, specifically the EGFR/MEK/ERK pathway.
  • * In mouse models, treatment with nimotuzumab led to lower PD-L1 levels and enhanced tumor sensitivity to chemotherapy, showing its potential to improve the effectiveness of cancer treatments in HNSCC patients.

Background: Atherosclerosis (AS) is a chronic vascular inflammatory disease resulting from vascular endothelial injury and lipid deposition, closely linked to abnormal lipid metabolism within the body. The critical processes involved in atherosclerosis encompass lipid deposition, oxidation, metabolic disruptions, and inflammatory stimulation within the inner vessel wall. Lipid deposition emerges as a pivotal factor triggering these pathological changes, with vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) playing a significant role in the development of AS.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the role of type I interferon and chronic inflammation in the development of type 1 diabetes using a model of Trex1-deficient rats created through CRISPR-Cas9 technology.
  • The Trex1-deficient rats develop diabetes spontaneously, exhibiting high blood sugar levels and complications similar to human diabetes, such as kidney damage and cataracts.
  • The findings suggest that the accumulation of ssDNA and the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines may drive inflammation in the pancreas, leading to the destruction of insulin-producing cells.

Background: About 15-60% of individuals with ankle sprains may develop functional ankle instability (FAI), which is characterised by ankle pain, decreased muscle strength, limited range of motion, and impaired balance, causing a decline in social activity and quality of life. However, the relationship between those characters is still unclear. This study aimed to investigate whether a relationship existed between ankle pain, active range of motion (AROM), strength and balance and if ankle pain, AROM and strength can predict balance in individuals with FAI.

Background: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a common inflammatory disease in otolaryngology, mainly manifested as nasal congestion, nasal discharge, facial pain/pressure, and smell disorder. CRS with nasal polyps (CRSwNP), an important phenotype of CRS, has a high recurrence rate even after receiving corticosteroids and/or functional endoscopic sinus surgery. In recent years, clinicians have focused on the application of biological agents in CRSwNP.

To explore the reasonable time of prophylactic thyroidectomy for gene carriers in multiple endocrine neoplasia(MEN) 2A/2B families. From May 2015 to August 2021, gene carriers in MEN2A/MEN2B families were dynamically followed up at the Department of Thyroid Head and Neck Surgery, Beijing Tongren Hospital of Capital Medical University. The high-risk patients were encouraged to undergo prophylacitc total thyroidectomy according to the principle of "graded early warning system", namely the evaluation of gene detection, calcitonin value and ultrasound examination successively.

Background: The degeneration of retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE) cells results in severe diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) that causes blindness in millions of individuals.

Results: We report that targeting GMP-AMP (cGAMP) synthase (cGAS) alleviates Alu RNA-induced immune responses and cytotoxicity in RPE. We find that the deletion of cGAS in RPE inhibits the Alu RNA-stimulated interferon production.
