Background: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a severe microvascular complication of diabetes characterized by inflammation, oxidative stress, and renal fibrosis. Asiaticoside (AC) exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-fibrotic properties, suggesting potential therapeutic benefits for DN. This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of AC against DN and elucidate the underlying mechanisms involving the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2)/heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) antioxidant pathway.

The Study of Speech Acoustic Characteristics of Elderly Individuals with Presbyphagia in Ningbo, China.

J Voice

October 2024

Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Beijing Children's Hospital Affiliated to Capital Medical University, National Center for Children's Health, Beijing, China; Beijing Key Laboratory for Pediatric Diseases of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Beijing, China.

The feasibility of using acoustic parameters to predict presbyphagia has been preliminarily confirmed. Considering that age and gender can influence the results of acoustic parameters, this study aimed to further explore the specific effects of age and gender on acoustic parameter analysis of the elderly population over 60 years old with presbyphagia. A total of 45 participants were enrolled and divided into three groups (60-69 years old, 70-79 years old, and 80-89 years old).

Therapeutic Effects of Metformin on Central Nervous System Diseases: A Focus on Protection of Neurovascular Unit.

Pharm Res

October 2024

Department of Ophthalmology, Tong Ren Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Shanghai, No. 1111 Xianxia Road, Changning District, Shanghai, 200050, PR China.

Metformin is one of the most commonly used oral hypoglycemic drugs in clinical practice, with unique roles in neurodegeneration and vascular lesions. Neurodegeneration and vasculopathy coexist in many diseases and typically affect the neurovascular unit (NVU), a minimal structural and functional unit in the central nervous system. Its components interact with one another and are indispensable for maintaining tissue homeostasis.

Background: Mounting evidence suggests a correlation between heavy metals exposure and diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a prevalent and irreversible complication of diabetes that can result in blindness. However, studies focusing on the effects of exposure to heavy metals on DR remain scarce.

Objective: Hypoglossal-facial nerve anastomosis (HFA) is the most commonly used surgical treatment for severe facial palsy that does not respond to conservative treatments. A major complication of HFA is the loss of tongue function. The authors aimed to evaluate whether anastomosing the transected hypoglossal nerve using the ramus descendens hypoglossi could prevent tongue deviation and dysfunction in patients undergoing HFA.

Background: Inflammation triggers atherosclerotic plaque rupture, leading to acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Following AMI, peri-coronary adipose tissue (PCAT) undergoes a transition from lipid-rich to hydrophilic characteristics due to vascular inflammation. This study investigates PCAT changes and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio levels during AMI.

Appropriate fibrosis is required to prevent subsequent adverse remodeling and heart failure post myocardial infarction (MI), and cardiac fibroblasts (CFs) play a critical role during the process. Carbonic anhydrase 3 (CAR3) is an important mediator in multiple biological processes besides its CO hydration activity; however, the role and underlying mechanism of CAR3 on cardiac repair post MI injury remains unknown. Here, we found that CAR3 expression was up-regulated in cardiac tissue in infarct area at the reparative phase of MI, with a peak at 7 days post MI.

Objectives: The etiology and pathologic mechanism underlying Alzheimer's disease (AD) are not clear. This study determined the effects of tau on amyloid-beta peptide(Aβ)-induced synaptic damages in a Drosophila model of AD.

Methods: Galactose-regulated upstream promoter element 4(Gal4) and an upstream active sequence system was used to establish four kinds of Aβ transgenic Drosophila models of AD.

Accurate and effective tumor diagnosis, detection, and treatment are key for improving the survival rates of patients. Chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR-T) cell therapy has shown remarkable clinical success in eradicating hematologic malignancies. However, the hostile microenvironment in solid tumors severely prevents CAR-T cells from migrating and from infiltrating and killing malignant cells.

Deep Learning-Enabled Clinically Applicable CT Planbox for Stroke With High Accuracy and Repeatability.

Front Neurol

March 2022

State Key Laboratory of Natural Medicines, Research Center of Biostatistics and Computational Pharmacy, China Pharmaceutical University, Nanjing, China.

Background: Computed tomography (CT) plays an essential role in classifying stroke, quantifying penumbra size and supporting stroke-relevant radiomics studies. However, it is difficult to acquire standard, accurate and repeatable images during follow-up. Therefore, we invented an intelligent CT to evaluate stroke during the entire follow-up.

Background: Ameloblastomas of jaw in the pediatric population are a rare clinical entity and have not been well addressed in the literatures. The present retrospective study analyzed the risk factors associated with recurrence of pediatric ameloblastomas.

Methods: Cases of primary pediatric ameloblastomas seen in a tertiary hospital between 2005 and 2015 were analyzed to identify the clinical factors associated with recurrence.

Improved anchoring nails: design and analysis of resistance ability : Tensile test and finite element analysis (FEA) of improved anchoring nails used in temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc anchor.

BMC Oral Health

August 2018

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, School of Medicine, Ninth People's Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, 639 Zhi Zao Ju Road, Shanghai, 200011, People's Republic of China.

Background: Anchorage is one of the most important treatments for severe temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). Anchoring nails have shown great success in clinical trials; however, they can break under pressure and are difficult to remove. In this study, we aimed to evaluate an improved anchoring nail and its mechanical stability.

The present study was designed to detect DNA repair response through the homologous recombination pathway in mouse spermatogonial stem cells. Mouse spermatogonial stem cells (mSSCs) were obtained from the adult DBA/2 mouse testes by MACS sorting. mSSCs and mice animals were divided into four groups (30 min, 2, 24 h, control) and treated with ionizing irradiation while the control group received pseudo-irradiation.

Ebselen is a seleno-organic compound that has been demonstrated to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. A previous study determined that ebselen inhibits airway inflammation induced by inhalational lipopolysaccharide (LPS), however, the underlying molecular mechanism remains to be elucidated. The present study investigated the effect of ebselen on the glutathione peroxidase (GPX)‑reactive oxygen species (ROS) pathway and interleukin‑8 (IL‑8) expression induced by Helicobacter pylori LPS in gastric cancer (GC) cells.
