Some of the millions of patients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) have developed new sequelae after recovering from the initial disease, termed post-acute sequelae of coronavirus disease 2019 (PASC). One symptom is anxiety, which is likely due to three etiologies: brain structural changes, neuroendocrine disruption, and neurotransmitter alterations. This review provides an overview of the current literature on the pathophysiological pathways linking coronavirus disease 2019 to anxiety, as well as the possible mechanisms of action in which an increasingly scrutinized treatment method, enhanced external counter-pulsation (EECP), is able to alleviate anxiety.

Heart Rhythm

January 2025

Institute and Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, Shanghai JiaoTong University School of Medicine, Shanghai, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • People with frailty have a higher risk of developing atrial fibrillation (AF), and this study aimed to investigate how long-term changes in frailty influence this risk.
  • The study involved over 50,000 UK Biobank participants who were assessed on their frailty levels and monitored for new cases of AF, heart failure (HF), coronary heart disease (CHD), and stroke over approximately 5 years.
  • Results indicated that even small increases in frailty (ΔFI) significantly raised the risk of AF, and participants who remained frail had nearly double the risk compared to those who maintained non-frail status; however, those who improved their frailty status saw a notable decrease in risk.

In recent years, steel-fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) has been increasingly applied in shield tunnel engineering. However, most research on SFRC segments focuses on the load-bearing capacity, while the tunnel deformation is an equally critical indicator that decides if the tunnel can operate safely during service conditions. Therefore, it is essential to also study the stiffness variations in SFRC segments, which is closely connected to the serviceability limit state (SLS).

Inhalable siRNA Targeting IL-11 Nanoparticles Significantly Inhibit Bleomycin-Induced Pulmonary Fibrosis.

ACS Nano

January 2025

Department of Thoracic Surgery, Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital, School of Medicine, Tongji University, Shanghai 200433, China.

For idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), interleukin 11 (IL-11) is a pivotal cytokine that stimulates the transformation of fibroblasts into myofibroblasts, thus accelerating the progression of pulmonary fibrosis. Here, we develop an innovative inhalable small interfering RNA (siRNA) delivery system termed PEI-GBZA, which demonstrates impressive efficiency in loading siIL-11 targeting IL-11 (siIL-11) and substantially suppresses the differentiation of fibroblasts into myofibroblasts and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), reduces neutrophil and macrophage recruitment, and ultimately relieves the established fibrotic lesions in the IPF model. PEI-GBZA is prepared by modifying low-molecular-weight polyethylenimine (PEI) with 4-guanidinobenzoic acid (GBZA).
