Four cyclometalated Ir(iii) complexes based on 4'-,-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)benzyl-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (TPYOH) and 4'-,-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)benzyl-6'-benzyl-2,2'-bipyridine (PhbpyOH) were synthesized and characterized. All the Ir(iii) complexes exhibited strong MLCT absorption peaks at about 450 nm, broad emission bands in the range of 500-700 nm. Z-scan results revealed that only complex Ir1A could exhibit certain two-photon absorption with maximal cross section values of 215 GM at 890 nm.

Purpose: After extracting impacted mandibular third molars (IMM3), the resulting bone loss at the distal surface of the distal root of mandibular second molars (MM2) is responsible for the poor stability of MM2. This study aimed to identify the clinical osteogenesis effect of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2)-loaded calcium phosphate cements (CPCs) and rhBMP-2 delivery systems (rhBMP-2/CPCs, named CPCII) on bone loss repair at the distal surface of the MM2 distal root after IMM3 extraction.

Methods: Written informed consent was obtained from every participant whose IMM3 needed extraction.

Colorectal cancer (CRC), one of the major health problems worldwide, mostly develops from colorectal adenomas. Advanced adenomas are generally considered as precancerous lesions and patients are recommended to remove the adenomas. Screening for colorectal cancer is usually performed by fecal tests (FOBT or FIT) and colonoscopy, however, their benefits are limited by uptake and adherence.

Tumor-infiltrating immune cells are closely associated with tumor occurrence and progression. The present study explored the potential mechanism of tumor-infiltrating plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDC) mediating the proliferation and metastasis of cancer cells in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). pDC distribution was detected by immunofluorescence and flow cytometry.

KSHV co-infection, a new co-factor for HPV-related cervical carcinogenesis?

Am J Cancer Res

November 2018

Department of Genetics, Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, Louisiana Cancer Research Center 1700 Tulane Ave, New Orleans, LA 70112, USA.

High-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the etiological agent of cervical cancer and some other cancers. Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) represents a principal causative agent of several human cancers arising in those immunocompromised patients. In fact, KSHV DNA has been detected in the female genital tract, and this virus may share some transmission routes with HPV, although the detection rate of KSHV in cervical samples is very low and the KSHV/HPV co-infection is seldom reported.

High-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the etiological agent of cervical, oral and oropharyngeal cancers. Another oncogenic virus, Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) can cause several human cancers arising in those immunocompromised patients. KSHV DNA has been detected in the oral cavity and the female genital tract, although its detection rate in cervical samples is relatively low.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by the pathological accumulation of misfolded proteins. Molecular chaperones assist in the proper folding of proteins and removal of irreversibly misfolded proteins. This study aims to identify potential chaperones associated with protein misfolding and accumulation in PD.

Stem-cell-derived hepatocyte transplantation is considered as a potential method for the therapy of acute and chronic liver failure. However, the low efficiency of differentiation into mature and functional hepatocytes remains a major challenge for clinical applications. By using polyethyleneimine-modified silica nanoparticles, this study develops a system for sustained delivery of growth factors, leading to induce hepatocyte-like cells (iHeps) from mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs) and improve the expression of endoderm and hepatocyte-specific genes and proteins significantly, thus producing a higher population of functional hepatocytes in vitro.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study explores the role of miR-143 in colorectal cancer (CRC), particularly how it targets the frequently mutated KRAS gene, which is important in cancer development.
  • - Researchers created a special virus called Ad-ZD55-miR-143 to deliver miR-143 to cancer cells, and tests showed that it successfully increased miR-143 expression and significantly killed CRC cells while sparing normal liver cells.
  • - Results indicated that Ad-ZD55-miR-143 effectively reduced KRAS levels in CRC cells and showcased potential as a targeted treatment approach for colorectal cancer.

This study was aimed to investigate the antiproliferative effect of escopoletin on CAL 27 and CAL 33 oral squamous cancer cell lines. MTT assay and flow cytometry were used for the analysis of escopoletin effect on cell viability and apoptosis, respectively. Western blot analysis was used for the examination of cyclin and cyclin-dependent kinase expression after treatment of CAL 33 cells with escopoletin.

The aim of this study is to compare the operative parameters and outcomes of conventional CO2-pneumoperitoneum (PP) versus gasless abdominal wall-lifting (AWL) for laparoscopic surgery. The literature databases of PubMed, Google Scholar and Cochrane Library were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that had compared the CO2-PP approach with that of gasless AWL for laparoscopic surgery and which had been published between 1995 and 2012. Data for the operative parameters (i.
