Sepsis is a critical condition with high mortality, often leading to acute lung injury (ALI) due to uncontrolled inflammatory responses and alveolar epithelial damage. Extracellular vesicles (EVs), particularly mesenchymal stem cell-derived EVs, have shown therapeutic potential in sepsis-related organ dysfunction by transferring RNAs and proteins. However, their clinical use is limited by low efficacy and yield.

In knee arthroscopy procedures, maintaining the opening of the medial compartment requires an assistant. Creating the posterior portal in knee arthroscopy is also a challenge because of the shape changes of the thick muscle. The leg is usually placed on the surgical bed, is angled off the lateral aspect of the bed, or drapes over the surgical bed in which the leg plates are removed.

Flow cytometry (FCM), characterized by its simplicity, rapid processing, multiparameter analysis, and high sensitivity, is widely used in the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of hematological malignancies. FCM testing of tissue samples not only aids in diagnosing and classifying hematological cancers, but also enables the detection of solid tumors. Its ability to detect numerous marker parameters from small samples is particularly useful when dealing with limited cell quantities, such as in fine-needle biopsy samples.

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) represents a major risk factor of ischemic stroke recurrence with serious management implications. However, it often remains undiagnosed due to lack of standard or prolonged cardiac rhythm monitoring. We aim to create a novel end-to-end artificial intelligence (AI) model that uses MRI data to rapidly identify high AF risk in patients who suffer from an acute ischemic stroke.

Multivalent-metal batteries hold tremendous promise in solving safety and sustainability problems encountered by common lithium-ion batteries, but the lack of ideal electrolyte solutions restricts their large-scale adoption. Tuning electrolyte structures with functional ingredients, especially amines/methoxy-based amines and phosphates, can revitalize multivalent-metal anodes and high-voltage cathodes in conventional electrolytes, unlocking their full potential. However, a rational and clear understanding of the implications of these ingredients, notwithstanding critically important to commercially available electrolyte design, has not been widely accepted.

Background: We used a two-sample mendelian randomization (MR) method to comprehensively investigate the causality of metabolic syndrome (MetS) or its components, including MetS, triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), fasting blood glucose (FBG), waist circumference (WC), and hypertension (HP), with cerebral aneurysm including nonruptured and ruptured aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH).
Methods: By leveraging large-scale genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics of MetS or its components and cerebral aneurysm (nonruptured and SAH) from European, MR, reverse-direction MR, and sensitivity analysis were utilized to quantify the genetic correlations and causal relationships. In addition, we adjusted for multiple comparisons using the false discovery rate (FDR) correction.

Background: Hemozoin is considered a waste byproduct of heme detoxification following hemoglobin digestion; consequently, the biological functions of hemozoin in hemozoin-producing organisms have often been overlooked. However, recent findings indicate that Schistosoma hemozoin facilitates the transfer of iron from erythrocytes to eggs through its formation and degradation, thereby increasing interest in the role of malarial hemozoin.
Methods: Using transmission electron microscopy, we compared the formation of Schistosoma hemozoin and malaria hemozoin.

Background: Despite the success of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in multiple malignant tumors, a significant proportion of patients remain unresponsive to treatment. Radiotherapy (RT) elicits immunogenic antitumor responses but concurrently activates several immune evasion mechanisms. Our earlier research demonstrated the efficacy of YM101, an anti-TGF-β/PD-L1 bispecific antibody, in stroma-rich tumors.

Background: The stromal vascular fraction (SVF) has been validated for enhancing tissue regeneration because of its concentration of multipotent cells and growth factors, and for mitigating inflammatory response due to its elimination of the majority of lipid droplets. However, it is difficult for fresh SVF to maintain bioactivity for a long period, and the loss of numerous tangible masses during preparation limits its application in repairing large volume defects. Here, we fabricated a self-assembly nanovesicle extruded from SVF (SVF-EVs) by mechanical shear and co-transplanted it with dermal microparticles to verify its potential for repairing large volume defects.

Background: We evaluated whether 5hmC signatures in cell-free DNA (cfDNA) are associated with treatment failure to androgen-deprivation therapies (ADT) among men with hormone-naive prostate cancer.
Methods: We collected a total of 139 serial plasma samples from 55 prostate cancer patients receiving ADT at 3 time points including baseline (before initiating ADT, n = 55); 3 months (after initiating ADT, n = 55); and disease progression (n = 15) within 24 months or 24 months if no progression was detected (n = 14). We used selective chemical labeling sequencing to quantify 5hmC abundance across the genome and Kaplan-Meier analysis to assess survival association.
