Article Synopsis
  • This study collected data from over 35,000 COVID-19 patients in China to analyze the rates of olfactory (smell) and gustatory (taste) dysfunctions following infection.!
  • Findings revealed a 67.75% incidence rate of these dysfunctions, with factors like gender, smoking, vaccination doses, and oral health affecting both the likelihood of experiencing and recovering from these symptoms.!
  • On average, smell and taste scores declined significantly after infection but showed some recovery over time, with 59.16% of patients reporting improvement, though some experienced prolonged symptoms lasting over 28 days.!

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers analyzed a Chinese family with AKE symptoms using genome-wide linkage analysis and whole-exome sequencing, leading to the identification of a mutation in the CCDC91 gene which affects elastin transport.
  • * Functional tests showed that a lack of CCDC91 leads to abnormal accumulation of proteins in skin cells, providing new insights into how this gene contributes to the disease's progression and advancing the understanding of AKE mechanisms.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to find the best treatment strategies for patients with locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer (LA-NSCLC) that have mutations in the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene, analyzing data from 2012 to 2018.
  • - Patients were divided into three treatment groups: those receiving chemoradiotherapy (CRT), a combination of radiation and EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), and those on EGFR-TKIs alone. The analysis used advanced statistical methods to assess overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS).
  • - Results showed that the group receiving combined radiation and TKIs had significantly better PFS and OS compared to the CRT group,

Article Synopsis
  • - This study investigates how the gene SOX9 affects microtubule formation and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cells (CAL27) and the mechanisms behind this process.
  • - Researchers used specific RNA interference to reduce SOX9 levels in CAL27 cells, leading to a notable decrease in microtubule structures and changes in EMT-related proteins like an increase in E-cadherin and a decrease in markers such as N-cadherin and Vimentin.
  • - The findings suggest that SOX9 plays a crucial role in promoting microtubule formation and EMT in these cancer cells, partly by activating the Wnt/β-catenin

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) animal models have revealed neuroprotective actions of Bryostatin-1 mediated by activation of novel PKC isoforms, suppression of beta-amyloid and downregulation of inflammatory and angiogenic events, making Bryostatin-1 an attractive candidate for attenuating AD-associated neural, vascular, and cognitive disturbances.

Objective: To further enhance Bryostatin-1 efficacy, nanoparticle-encapsulated Bryostatin-1 formulations were prepared.

Methods: We compared nano-encapsulated and unmodified Bryostatin-1 in in vitro models of neuronal PKC-d, PKC-e isoforms, α-secretase and studied nano-encapsulated Bryostatin-1 in an AD mouse model of spatial memory (BC3-Tg (APPswe, PSEN1 dE9) 85Dbo/J mice).
