Gender differences in systemic inflammatory and nutritional index following radical surgery for advanced gastric cancer.

Zhong Nan Da Xue Xue Bao Yi Xue Ban

August 2024

Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, General Surgery, Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, Changsha 410008.

Objectives: Albumin-globulin ratio (AGR), prognostic nutritional index (PNI), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) have been validated as prognostic factors for gastric cancer (GC). However, significant gender differences exist in albumin levels and inflammatory cell counts, and further research is required to understand how these differences influence GC prognosis. This study aims to investigate the prognostic impact of nutritional and inflammatory indicators on GC patients undergoing radical surgery, as well as the influence of gender on these indicators' prognostic value.

Association of Residential Greenness and Sleep Duration in Adults: A Prospective Cohort Study in China.

Environ Res

January 2025

Department of Public Health, the Second Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Hangzhou, 310058, China. Electronic address:

Background: Exposure to residential greenness has been linked with improved sleep duration; however, longitudinal evidence is limited, and the potential mediating effect of ambient fine particulate matter (PM) has yet to be assessed.

Methods: We obtained data for 19,567 participants across seven counties in a prospective cohort in Ningbo, China. Greenness was estimated using Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) within 250-m, 500-m and 1000-m buffer zones, while yearly average PM concentrations were measured using validated land-use regression models, both based on individual residential addresses.

Department of Pharmacy, Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, 430022, China; Hubei Province Clinical Research Center for Precision Medicine for Critical Illness, Wuhan, 430022, China. Electronic address:

Cancer associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are one of the most important stromal cells in the tumor microenvironment, playing a pivotal role in the development, recurrence, metastasis, and immunosuppression of cancer and treatment resistance. Here, we developed a core-shell biomimetic nanosystem termed as FAP-C NPs. This system was comprised of 4T1 extracellular vesicles fused with a FAP single-chain antibody fragment to form the biomimetic shell, and PLGA nanoparticles loaded with calcipotriol as the core.

Deciphering Consciousness: The Role of Corticothalamocortical Interactions in General Anesthesia.

Pharmacol Res

January 2025

Department of Anesthesiology, Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China; Institute of Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine, Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China; Key Laboratory of Anesthesiology and Resuscitation (Huazhong University of Science and Technology), Ministry of Education, Wuhan, China. Electronic address:

General anesthesia is administered to millions of individuals each year, however, the precise mechanism by which it induces unconsciousness remains unclear. While some theories suggest that anesthesia shares similarities with natural sleep, targeting sleep-promoting areas and inhibiting arousal nuclei, recent research indicates a more complex process. Emerging evidence highlights the critical role of corticothalamocortical circuits, which are involved in higher cognitive functions, in controlling arousal states and modulating transitions between different conscious states during anesthesia.

We evaluated the prognostic and therapeutic significance of measurable residual disease (MRD) during remission induction in pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) patients. In the CCCG-ALL-2015 protocol, 7640 patients were categorized into low-, intermediate-, or high-risk groups based on clinical and genetic features. Final risk classification was determined by MRD assessed via flow cytometry on Days 19 and 46 of remission induction, with additional intensified chemotherapy for Day 19 MRD ≥1%.

As functional derivatives of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) have garnered significant attention and application in regenerative medicine. However, the technical limitations for large-scale isolation of sEVs and their heterogeneous nature have added complexity to their applications. It remains unclear if the heterogeneous sEVs represent different aspects of MSCs functions.

Mitochondrial SIRT2-mediated CPT2 deacetylation prevents diabetic cardiomyopathy by impeding cardiac fatty acid oxidation.

Int J Biol Sci

January 2025

Division of Endocrinology, Department of Internal Medicine, Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China.

Dysregulated energy metabolism, particularly lipid metabolism disorders, has been identified as a key factor in the development of diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM). Sirtuin 2 (SIRT2) is a deacetylase involved in the regulation of metabolism and cellular energy homeostasis, yet its role in the progression of DCM remains unclear. We observed significantly reduced SIRT2 expression in DCM model mice.

Deficiency of Epithelial PIEZO1 Alleviates Liver Steatosis Induced by High-Fat Diet in Mice.

Int J Biol Sci

January 2025

Division of Gastroenterology, Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan 430022, China.

PIEZO1 has been found to play a vital role in regulating intestinal epithelial cells (IEC) function and maintaining intestinal barrier in recent years. Therefore, IEC PIEZO1 might exert a significant impact on liver metabolism through the gut-liver axis, but there is no research on this topic currently. Classic high-fat diet (HFD) model and mice with IEC-specific deficiency of PIEZO1 ( ) were used to explore the problem.

January 2025

Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, National Clinical Research Center of Respiratory Disease, Key Laboratory of Pulmonary Diseases of Health Ministry, Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, Hubei, China.

As a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, fibrosis is the common pathway of various chronic inflammatory diseases in organs and causes death in a large number of patients. It can destroy the structure and function of organs and ultimately lead to organ failure, which is a major cause of disability and death in many diseases. However, the regulatory mechanism of organ fibrosis is not well clear and the lack of effective drugs and treatments, which seriously endangers human health and safety.

Functional injectable hydrogel (IH) is promising for infected bone defects (IBDs) repair, but how to endow it with desired antibacterial/immunoregulatory functions as well as avoid mechanical failures during its manipulation has posed as main challenges. Herein, rosmarinic acid (RosA), a natural product with antibacterial/immunoregulatory activities, was utilized to develop a FCR IH through forming phenylboronic acid ester bonds with 4-formylphenyl phenylboronic acid (4-FPBA) grafted chitosan (CS) (FC). After being applied to the IBD site, the FCR IH was then injected with tobramycin (Tob) solution, another alkaline antibacterial drug, to induce in situ crystallization of the FC, endowing the resultant FCRT hydrogel with adaptively enhanced mechanical strength and structural stability.
