Background: Xerostomia is the main manifestation from patients with Sjögren syndrome (SS). However, traditional immunosuppressive agents are nearly invalid due to complicated etiopathogenesis in salivary glands, including aberrant immune dysregulation, epithelial structure destruction, and diminished secretory function.

Objective: To investigate the therapeutic effect of murine embryonic mesenchymal stem cells (ME-MSCs) on salivary glandular epithelium structure and secretory function in Sjögren-like mice.

LncRNAs are reported to participate in the progression of various diseases including diabetic nephropathy. Currently, we reported that SNHG16 was obviously upregulated in db/db mice and high glucose-treated mice mesangial cells. Then, functional experiments showed that SNHG16 silencing significantly inhibited proliferation of mice mesangial cells, which induced the apoptosis and triggered cell cycle arrest.

In the present study, a novel single domain antibody (sdAb) fusion protein, named everestmab, composing of a mutated GLP-1(A8G) fused to the tandem bispecific humanized GLP-1R-targeting and albumin-binding nanobodies was designed and characterized for the therapies for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) measurements demonstrated everestmab associates with serum albumins of rat and monkey species with high affinity, and tends to be cross-reactive with rat and monkey species. GLP-1R binding and activation assays revealed that everestmab can specifically activate the GLP-1R, and the antagonist exendin-4 (9-39) did not inhibit the activation yet.

The vital roles of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been implicated in growing number of studies in tumor development. LncRNA CCAT1 has been recognized as associated with tumor development, yet its relation with colorectal cancer (CRC) remains elusive. Our study aimed at elucidating the function and mechanisms of long non-coding RNA CCAT1 in CRC.

With the development and improvement of new techniques in cell biology, molecular biology and biostatistics, increasing studies have been conducted to investigate the mechanism of venous thromboembolism (VTE). Some studies have found that the pathogenesis of VTE is largely related to the abnormality of the immune system as demonstrated by the thrombosis in mice infected with H1N1 influenza and the changes in the expression of genes related to immune system. According to the protein-protein interaction analysis of the differential expression of the immune system in VTE patients, the presence of venous thrombosis was related to the abnormal expression of molecules in JAK/STAT signaling pathway.

Aberrant Thalamic-Centered Functional Connectivity in Patients with Persistent Somatoform Pain Disorder.

Neuropsychiatr Dis Treat

January 2020

Department of Psychological Medicine, Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine, Shanghai, People's Republic of China.

Purpose: Recent task-based fMRI studies have shown that Persistent Somatoform Pain Disorder (PSPD) patients demonstrated aberrant activity in a wide range of brain regions associated with sensation, cognition and emotion. However, these specific task-based studies could not clearly uncover the alterations in the spontaneous brain networks that were associated with the general pain-related symptoms in PSPD.

Patients And Methods: In the present study, 13 PSPD patients and 23 matched healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled.

Role of the autophagy-related marker LC3 expression in hepatocellular carcinoma: a meta-analysis.

J Cancer Res Clin Oncol

May 2020

Department of Central Laboratory, Songjiang Hospital Affiliated First People's Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, 746 Zhongshan Road, Shanghai, 201600, China.

Background: Microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 (LC3), an autophagic gene, has been reported as a vital marker for many diseases and cancers. However, the role of LC3 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was not still investigated. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to examine the association of LC3 with its clinicopathological and prognostic in HCC.

Serum osteocalcin level is associated with the mortality in Chinese patients with Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva aged ≤18 years at diagnosis.

BMC Musculoskelet Disord

March 2020

Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Tongji Hospital of Tongji University, Tongji University School of Medicine, No. 389, Xincun Road, Shanghai, 200065, China.

Background: Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is an ultra-rare genetic disorder characterized by extraskeletal heterotopic ossification. It is well recognized that FOP can lead to a devastating condition of disability. However, the mortality rate of FOP patients in China and risk factors for mortality are still largely unclear.

Article Synopsis
  • Inhibitors of apoptosis proteins (IAPs) play a crucial role in regulating cell processes and their dysregulation can lead to cancer progression and resistance to treatment.
  • This study analyzed IAPs across various cancers using extensive data from The Cancer Genome Atlas and other sources, revealing their complex expression patterns and regulatory functions beyond just apoptosis.
  • The findings indicate that IAPs serve as significant predictors for patient survival and could inform treatment strategies, particularly regarding drug sensitivity to specific inhibitors in cancers like brain, liver, and lung.

Background: The incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients with sepsis is high, and the prognosis of patients with septic AKI is poor. The early diagnosis and treatment of septic AKI is of great significance in improving the prognosis of patients with sepsis.

Aim: To explore the value of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS), serum creatinine (Scr), and other indicators in the early diagnosis of septic AKI.

Background: Early neointimal hyperplasia of vein graft may be ameliorated via enhancing intravenous surface shear stress. Cellular processes including proliferation, apoptosis and migration of endothelial cells (ECs) and vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) may play very important roles in the process of neointimal hyperplasia of vein graft; and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways including extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK1/2) and p38 pathways play vital roles in regulating a large variety of cellular processes. This study evaluated the impacts of shear stress and MAPK pathways on cellular processes of ECs in a co-culture system with VSMCs, and aimed to test the hypothesis that high shear stress suppresses proliferation and migration but promotes apoptosis of ECs co-cultured with VSMCs via down-regulating MAPK pathway.

Asian J Psychiatr

January 2020

The National Clinical Research Center for Mental Disorders & Beijing Key Laboratory of Mental Disorders & Beijing Anding Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how age impacts treatment outcomes in patients experiencing their first episode of major depressive disorder (MDD), specifically looking at those over 18 years old.
  • A total of 982 patients were divided into three age groups—early adults (18-44), middle adults (45-59), and late adults (60-85)—and assessed over 8-12 weeks of antidepressant treatment.
  • Results showed that younger patients faced more severe depressive symptoms and functional impairment compared to older adults, suggesting that younger age is linked with worse clinical outcomes in MDD.
