Given the increase in research suggesting benefit following cognitive training in older adults, researchers have started to investigate the potential moderating role of genetic polymorphisms on transfer effects. The objective of this study was to evaluate the moderating effect of catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) polymorphisms on transfer effects following a single-domain or multi-domain training intervention in healthy community-dwelling older adults. A total of 104 men and women living in Shanghai were randomized to a multi-domain or a single-domain cognitive training (SDCT) group.

Background/aims: Alternative splicing and DNA damage exhibit cross-regulation, with not only DNA damage inducing changes in alternative splicing, but alternative splicing itself possibly modulating the DNA damage response (DDR). Sirt1, a prominent anti-aging player, plays pivotal roles in the DDR. However, few studies have examined alternative splicing with DNA damage in neural stem cells (NSCs) and, in essence, nothing is known about whether SIRT1 regulates alternative splicing.

MicroRNA (miRNA) plays an important role in tumourigenesis and cancer development by regulating oncogenes or tumour suppressor that are implicated in cell cycle, cell mobility and even cell senescence. Due to the resistance to enzymes that could degrade nucleotides, miRNAs have been considered proper for diagnosis and prognosis evaluation of cancer. The present study was designed to investigate miRNA associated with ESCC and identified effective miRNAs, which could serve as biomarker or targets.

Nonischemic cardiomyopathy (NICM) resulting from long-standing hypertension, valvular disease, and genetic mutations is a major cause of heart failure worldwide. Recent observations suggest that myeloid cells can impact cardiac function, but the role of tissue-intrinsic vs. tissue-extrinsic myeloid cells in NICM remains poorly understood.

Leukotriene B4 (LTB4) synthesis is enhanced in the colonic mucosa in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). BLT1, a high-affinity receptor for LTB4, exhibits no effect on the progression of dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis, which mostly relies on innate immunity. Here, we reported that BLT1 regulates trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS)-induced colitis, which reflects CD4 T-cell-dependent adaptive immune mechanisms of IBD.

Emerging evidence indicates the beneficial effects of physical exercise on human health, which depends on the intensity, training time, exercise type, environmental factors, and the personal health status. Conventional biomarkers provide limited insight into the exercise-induced adaptive processes. Circulating microRNAs (miRNAs, miRs) are dynamically regulated in response to acute exhaustive exercise and sustained rowing, running and cycling exercises.

The use of azole fungicides in agriculture is believed to be one of the main reasons for the emergence of azole resistance in Though widely used in agriculture, imidazole fungicides have not been linked to resistance in This study showed that elevated MIC values of imidazole drugs were observed against isolates with TR/L98H/S297T/F495I mutation, but not among isolates with TR/L98H mutation. Short-tandem-repeat (STR) typing analysis of 580 isolates from 20 countries suggested that the majority of TR/L98H/S297T/F495I strains from China were genetically different from the predominant major clade comprising most of the azole-resistant strains and the strains with the same mutation from the Netherlands and Denmark. Alignments of sterol 14α-demethylase sequences suggested that F495I in was orthologous to F506I in and F489L in , which have been reported to be associated with imidazole resistance.

Ultrasound-targeted microbubble destruction (UTMD) and the herb medicine borneol can both facilitate the delivery of therapeutic agents to diseased brain regions and serve as promising adjuvant neuroprotective therapies. Our preliminary experiments showed that UTMD could exacerbate ischemic blood-brain barrier (BBB) opening, while borneol can protect the BBB. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that the combination of UTMD and borneol could attenuate UTMD-induced injury to the BBB under ischemic stroke conditions.

Hepatocarcinoma is one of the most lethal malignancy haunting the Chinese population, which is partially due to the difficulties in diagnosis at an early stage. The search for a biomarker that could signify the presence and progress of hepatocarcinoma is never ended. MicroRNAs are 22-nt RNAs that could bind to 3' UTR of target mRNAs, mediating degradation of mRNAs or inhibiting the translation.
