This study aimed at elucidating the molecular mechanism of miR-381-3p in cervical cancer progression, which may provide a novel therapeutic target for patients with cervical cancer. The expression of miR-381-3p was confirmed by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Microarray analysis was conducted to screen out differentially expressed genes, and the target gene of microRNA (miRNA) was predicted on TargetScan.

Background/aims: Alternative splicing and DNA damage exhibit cross-regulation, with not only DNA damage inducing changes in alternative splicing, but alternative splicing itself possibly modulating the DNA damage response (DDR). Sirt1, a prominent anti-aging player, plays pivotal roles in the DDR. However, few studies have examined alternative splicing with DNA damage in neural stem cells (NSCs) and, in essence, nothing is known about whether SIRT1 regulates alternative splicing.

MicroRNA (miRNA) plays an important role in tumourigenesis and cancer development by regulating oncogenes or tumour suppressor that are implicated in cell cycle, cell mobility and even cell senescence. Due to the resistance to enzymes that could degrade nucleotides, miRNAs have been considered proper for diagnosis and prognosis evaluation of cancer. The present study was designed to investigate miRNA associated with ESCC and identified effective miRNAs, which could serve as biomarker or targets.

The objective of this study was to systemically and comprehensively evaluate the associations between smoking and disease outcomes in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Information on smoking, clinical features, and sociodemographic characteristics was collected by a questionnaire administered directly to the patient. Group differences were analyzed by t test or chi-square test.

Hepatic fibrosis is a common pathological process in the development of various chronic liver diseases into liver cirrhosis. Based on current research findings, it is widely believed that the process of hepatic fibrosis is reversible, and effective treatment cannot only delay the development of hepatic fibrosis into liver cirrhosis, but also alleviate the degree of hepatic fibrosis. Therefore, the research on the treatment of hepatic fibrosis is of great clinical significance.

Lung adenocarcinoma is one of the types of non‑small cell lung carcinoma, which tends to be treated with surgical therapy rather than radiation therapy. It occurs in smokers and non‑smokers, and is the most common form of lung cancer among non‑smokers and women. Gene rearrangements, including ALK, ROS1 and RET, and gene mutations, including epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), HER2, Kristen rat sarcoma viral oncogene homolog, BRAF, phosphoinositide‑3‑kinase, catalytic, α polypeptide and MET, have been identified in lung adenocarcinoma, which enable targeted therapy in lung adenocarcinoma, for example erlotinib, gefitinib and afatinib, which are EGFR inhibitors.

The study aimed to determine whether unique clinical patterns of AS may exist in China, specifically to explore the different clinical manifestations caused by gender, HLA-B27 status, and age at disease onset. The multicenter cross-sectional survey was conducted and 1251 patients were enrolled across China, representing a broad spectrum of Chinese AS patients. The mean age at onset and diagnosis were 29.

Targeting leukemia initiating cells is considered to be an effective way to cure leukemia, for which it is critical to identify novel therapeutic targets. Herein, we demonstrate that CD244, which was initially reported as a key regulator for natural killer cells, is highly expressed on both mouse and human leukemia initiating cells. Upon CD244 knockdown, human leukemia cell lines and primary leukemia cells have markedly impaired proliferation abilities both and Interestingly, the repopulation ability of both mouse and human hematopoietic stem cells is not impaired upon CD244 knockdown.

Myeloproliferative neoplasms such as polycythemia vera (PV), which are associated with the JAK mutation V617F, remain incurable despite progress in the use of JAK2 inhibitors for treatment of some of these diseases. In this study, we employed mice that undergo JAK2V617F-induced PV as a tool to explore new candidate targets for therapy. Our investigations focused on the lipid metabolic enzyme arachidonate 5-lipoxygenase (Alox5), which we found to be strongly upregulated by JAK2V617F in hematopoietic cells in vitro and in vivo Notably, genetic deletion of Alox5 or its inhibition in mice with a bioactive small-molecule inhibitor was sufficient to attenuate PV development.

Objective: To investigate superiorities of a special needle-over-cannula adopting different location methods for continuous femoral nerve block (CFNB) for geriatric lower extremity joint arthroplasty.
Methods: 60 elderly patients intending to receive scheduled knee or hip replacement surgery were recruited and divided into 3 groups randomly. Group 1 (n=20) adopted fascial pop for continuous femoral nerve block and postoperative analgesia with indwelling cannula.

Serum liver enzyme levels are often used effectively for the evaluation of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We aimed to investigate the associations between serum liver enzyme levels and risks for NAFLD in over 8000 cases in a large-scale analysis. A cross-sectional survey with multiple stages and random samplings was performed from May 2007 to May 2009 on 8102 workers at Tongji University.

The pathogenesis of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients with cancer is related to the destruction of small veins and the intravenous formation of filamentous mesh-like structure by fibrinogen. The filamentous mesh-like filter can block hematogenous metastasis of cancer cells and also can stagnate blood cells, leading to venous thrombosis. Cancer cells have characteristics of malignancy and fast proliferation, and ischemic necrosis frequently occurs, and small veins were invaded and damaged.

Objective: To investigate localization and distribution of integrin subunit β1, β2 and β3 and morphological changes of ligand-recepter binding in thrombi of acute pulmonary embolism (PE) patients and explore activation of circulated immune cells, inflammatory immune adherence and coagulation response in acute venous thrombosis.
Methods: Thrombi were collected from patients with acute PE. Immunohistochemistry was done to detect the expression and distribution of integrin β1, β2 and β3 in cells within thrombi, and ligands of integrin subunit β1, β2 and β3 were also determined by immunohistochemistry within the thrombi.

Aging refers to the physical and functional decline of the tissues over time that often leads to age-related degenerative diseases. Accumulating evidence implicates that the senescence of neural stem cells (NSCs) is of paramount importance to the aging of central neural system (CNS). However, exploration of the underlying molecular mechanisms has been hindered by the lack of proper aging models to allow the mechanistic examination within a reasonable time window.

The incidence and clinical features of portopulmonary hypertension (POPH) have not been adequately described and it is currently unknown whether an association exists between the severity of POPH and liver function. Additionally, POPH risk factors are yet to be identified. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence, describe the clinical features and investigate the potential risk factors of POPH.

Hypoxic hepatitis (HH), one of the most common causes of acute liver injury, has a prevalence of up to 10% of admissions in intensive care units across the world. Inadequate oxygen uptake by the hepatocytes resulting in centrilobular necrosis associated with abnormally raised levels of the serum transaminases (ALT, AST) in patients with clinical history of cardiac, respiratory, or circulatory failures is the key feature of this condition. Abstracts, reviews, case reports, and research letters from various sources such as Pubmed, Proquest, Ovid, Google Scholar, and ISI Web of Knowledge dating from 1970 to 2011 were read and analyzed thoroughly.
