Thyroid cancer can be classified into three different types based on the degree of differentiation: well-differentiated, poorly differentiated, and anaplastic thyroid carcinoma. Well-differentiated thyroid cancer refers to cancer cells that closely resemble normal thyroid cells, while poorly differentiated and anaplastic thyroid carcinoma are characterized by cells that have lost their resemblance to normal thyroid cells. Advanced thyroid carcinoma, regardless of its degree of differentiation, is known to have a higher likelihood of disease progression and is generally associated with a poor prognosis.

Gefitinib, an epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor, is used as a first-line treatment for advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC); however, its utility is hampered by the development of chemoresistance. This study aimed to investigate the synergistic role of WZ4003, a novel (nua) kinase (NUAK) inhibitor, in enhancing gefitinib sensitivity in NSCLC cells. Our data indicated WZ4003 enhances the sensitivity of NSCLC cells to gefitinib.

The roles of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and spinal N-methyl-D-aspartic acid receptor 2B (NR2B) in visceral hypersensitivity were investigated. A rat model with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) was established by intracolonic injections of acetic acid onpost-natal days 8-21. Rats were randomly divided into five groups: normal intact (control) group, IBS model group, Ro25-6981-treated IBS rats (Ro25-6981, a NR2B antagonist) group, amitriptyline-treated IBS rats (amitriptyline, a 5-HT antagonist) and Ro25-6981 plus amitriptyline-treated IBS rats (Ro25-6981+amitriptyline) group.

SMAD7 is a key inhibitor of transforming growth factor β (TGFβ) receptor signaling, which regulates the alteration of cancer cell invasiveness through epithelial-mesenchymal cell conversion. Since microRNAs (miRNAs) play a potential role in the tumorigenesis, cancer cell growth and metastases of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), determination of the involved miRNAs that may regulate SMAD7-mediated OSCC cell invasion appears to be one important question. Here, we found that the levels of miR-497 were significantly increased and the levels of SMAD7 were significantly decreased in OSCC specimens, compared to the paired adjacent non-tumor tissue.
